Vick signing proves one thing — believe nothing anyone says

We’ve gradually learned over the years never to take at face value anything that anyone connected to the NFL says when the cameras are rolling and the mics are hot.

We think that this dynamic arises from the reality that, in football, success routinely is premised on successfully deceiving the opponent.  Whether it’s the play-action pass or the draw play or the zone blitz, teams realize that the best way to accomplish something comes from persuading the opponent that something else is going to happen.

Off the field, where the media is viewed in many cases as an extension of the on-field opposition, the strategic value of not telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth has been seen in various contexts.  Like when talking about player injuries.  Or when discussing whether a game plan will include heavy doses of the run or the pass.

Or when talking about whether a team is interested in Mike Vick.

So with everyone in Philly who has a vested rooting interest in seeing Armageddon not unfold in the locker room prepared to accept without reservation Donovan McNabb’s assertion that he “pretty much lobbied” the team to sign Vick (something that, interestingly, the head coach didn’t mention), we ask you this:  Would you like to buy the Ben Franklin Bridge?

Reid lied, multiple times, about not wanting Vick.  Why?  To make the rest of the league (and everyone else) think Reid didn’t want Vick until Reid decided he did.

That fact alone should prove to anyone who follows the NFL that nothing anyone says can be automatically believed.

McNabb, as we pointed out last night when explaining that he’s actually pissed about the acquisition of Vick, had no choice but to sit there and smile and act like everything is fine, despite likely muttering internally all the while, “Serenity now.”

As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.”  (Or something.)

In the NFL, the reality is that they’re always trying to fool us.  It’s an accepted reality of the business.

And so the challenge of the discerning fan is to peel back the onion, and get to the truth.

In this case, we’re convinced that the truth is that McNabb — who in the past has been threatened by guys like Jeff Garcia and Kevin Kolb and who had a hissyfit when he was benched last season (ultimately wanting a “financial apology,” reportedly) — is threatened by the presence of Vick.

We’re also convinced that Reid doesn’t care, and that Reid will continue to do that which he believes is in the best interests of the team.

Why would McNabb be threatened by Mike Vick? Vick is NOT GOING TO REPLACE HIM under ANY circumstances. The Eagles and the Eagle fans know that McNabb is better than Vick, and its been proven time and time again. Vick is there to run gadget plays at the most. He’s not even a true backup QB. They already HAVE 2 backup QBs in Kolb and Feely. He’s going to play maybe 15-20 plays ALL YEAR.

As much as I can’t stand Andy Reid and feel that along with Tony Dungy, is the most overrated coach in the history of the NFL, you have to give him credit for not giving a damn about what McNabb thinks. That organization will bend over backwards and take it up the backside for McNabb no matter what is in the best interest of the team, so its good to see a coach who just doesnt care about the corporate bs associated with the NFL. I personally feel like Vick was signed to replace McNabb at some point, probably sooner than later. Everyone puts up with McNabb but let’s be honest, no one likes him or his cry baby, spoiled brat attitude. As a Dallas fan I’m just waiting for the preverbial (did I spell that right?) crap to hit the fan!

Way to stay ahead of the curve with this one PFT.
Philly fans are the worst in sports, it’s too bad that McNabb has had to play his stellar career in a city that only knows how to boo. Four NFC championship games and consistent success in one of the toughest divisions in football and i’ll bet after McNabb throws his first pick the “fans” will be calling for Vick to start.
Here’s to hoping that McNabb gets out after this year and finishes his career in city that appreciates the probowl player, and all around stant u p guy that he is.
I can’t wait to see Vick running around like a fool and throwing the ball at Jackson’s feet. That is if he is still fast enough to avoid getting crushed.
Aperfect match for a city that treats it’s players like garbage. Congratulations you are now the kings of the landfill.

Barring a McNabb injury, which has certainly happened before, I tend to agree with this sentiment. And, even for a team with salary cap space, $1.6 million for a guy who is likely to be nothing more than a regular season curiosity for 10 games, and a potential PR problem, seems questionable.

“Nobody’s perfect and that’s including myself,” McNabb said. “And you know I’m looking to just show him kind of how I prepare, show him me getting there 6:30 in the morning, working out in the morning, getting your body ready to go, get ready for meetings and then staying after until 6, 6:30 to watch film. Then let him know exactly what I do at home or to just kind of get away from football and get my mind focused on the next day and spending time with family. He’s already spoken of [how] he’s missed two important years of his daughter’s life, her being born for two months and then had to go serve his time. So just kind of bringing our families together and just kind of bringing them into our households and just kind of humble and understanding what it is we do over there.”
Above is from DNabb. Here’s an idea, use him as one of your sources, Perez Florio!

Big Stretch – LA fans are the worst in sports. We don’t only know how to boo, and it’s 5 NFC championship games. If you’re going to insult a city, why not insult a city like Pittsburgh, where they almost lost the Penguins because their fans are all fair-weather, not a city like Philly, which set attendance records for the Flyers when they were the worst team in the league, and it wasn’t close. Why not insult the Boston fans who couldn’t seem to find a Bruin’s game until the team was winning its division? No, Philly fans go to every game and we support our teams…we just don’t care for the Ricky Watters (for who, for what?) of the world. Your comment was ignorant.
Bryan_Nelms: The HOLDING CELL (not a jail) was in the previous stadium (get your facts straight), and usually was reserved for away fans. Not to mention, Philly is not the only stadium in the world where the police have placed a holding cell, it’s just the only one ESPN reports about.
    And it’s spelled proverbial.

If McNabb was pissed about them taking a college QB in the draft, it is rather hard to believe that this does not bother him.
That being said, Vick is certainly no threat to his job this year. Vick will have less than half of training camp after 2 years out of the game.
Vick will probably listed as the #2 Qb, because if the #3 QB comes in before the 4th quarter, the first 2 Qb’s can’t come back in the game, which would eliminate Vick being used in the Wildcat. I believe, however, if McNabb goes down, it would be Kolb, not Vick, who would replace him. There is no way, with Reid’s 1000 page playbook, that any QB could take over that fast.
    2010? Different story……………

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!! HATERS!!!! HA HA HA HA HATTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McNabb HELPED the team sign Vick…..McNabb and Vick are good friends have been for a while..Here is how this will play out…
    1. He will hang out and study under McNabb the intracies of improving his QB play and getting Football ready….
    2. He will play about 2 to 5 plays a game starting after week 6 or 7…..
3.I dare PETA to c ome to Lincoln Financial startin ISH about Vick…And watch the city of Philly respond in a very VIOLENT WAY!(and I Aint a Eagle fan)
4.He will stay out of trouble learn from Reid learn from McNabb and try to sign with another team in 2010
    Last but not least…..
    5. REGARDLESS of what Mike Vick did there will be those that WONT FORGIVE him either because they are racist or they are an Atheist….If you believe in a higher power then you need to take that up with your God if you dont want to forgive…..Vick needs to move on and If I were him every time I walk into a stadium on the road and here the N word and Dog killer you know the ISH he is going to here CAUSE HE WILL HEAR THIS…….He needs to use that as MOTIVATION!!!!!!!!!!! How many people expected Ray Lewis to win the Super Bowl after a murder trial???? Regardless if he was innocent….They(fans) attacked him in every stadium and it FUELED him to games like 20 tackles crazy sacks and INTS…..Men have 2 ways to deal with adversity they will FALL because its too much or they will RISE to it and shut the fans up that talk like that…..Which 1 will he do???? Well sometime in 09 we will see……
    GO GET EM VICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    JWILL007 !!!!!
Not one of your 5 “points” are at all correct:
First, Vick wasn’t bright enough to learn a simple play book and to learn how to play QB the first time so why the hell would he all of a sudden learn this difficult more complex playbook of Andy Reid? He was never a good QB and never will be.
Second, he will play in every game that he is allowed to by the NFL. They are not taking this PR hit or spending this cap room for him to sit the bench.
Third, why would you say that people should attack protestors? They have the damn right to protest him if they want and they reserve the right to be protected by law enforcement. Should any eagle thug, POS of a fan attack someone merely for voicing thier opinions I hope they go to jail or get their asses kicked in defense. (Unless of course the PETA people act in a way that is violent or enticing violence in which case they deserve it)
Fourth, why the HELL would the Eagles bring him on to make him a better player, invest money in him then allow him to go to another team? Do you even realize how assenine this sounds?
Lastly, Here we go again, another idiot trying to use the race card. You are a damn moron and a damn coward! I will never forgive Michael Vick because I am a proud owner of a dog that him or one of his thugs would have stole from my back yard and used it as bait! I will never forgive him because he participated in the most barbaic forms of crap ever. And I will never trust him because he showed acts of a true sociopath and also I’m pretty sure that torturing animals is something that serial killers tend to do when they are young.
You my friend are seriously challenged in the intelligence category and common sense field. I don’t understand how some people in this country can have been failed by the public school system so badly. You have no logic, no basis for argument and most importantly no combination of the 2. The fact that you are a Bengals fan pretty much sums up this final paragraph and people could probably have figured this out without my rant.
Disclaimer: I understand that I am attacking your intelligence and that I probably made a few gramatical errors and mispelled some words. Thats what happens when you become angry that someone is so damn ignorant.

Below is what Michael Vick said Tuesday to 250 kids at a basketball camp. If he thinks this bull@!$%# will “revamp his image”, he is so, so wrong.
***The free agent NFL quarterback, who last month finished a 23-month federal prison sentence for dogfighting, told a crowd of about 250 to “use me as an example for your dreams.” Vick also told them that after accomplishing his goals he “allowed someone who didn’t have my best interests at heart to take all that away from me,” according to a release from the school.***
He doesn’t have any intention of taking responsibility for the torture and abuse that he visited upon innocent dogs. And I am furious that The American Humane Society is using him as a role model for kids. That **** ended at the first check that he wrote for the dog fights, the first dog he killed and the lies that he has repeatedly told.

You cant bring things up about Donovan throwing hissy fits about the benching in the media or talking about how he wants weapons in the media or how he didnt agree with the Kolb signing in the media or how he wasnt happy with the teams previous off-season acqustions before this year in the media and then try to say hes hiding his feelings for the team now.?.
If he was mad about the Vick signing he would say it in so many words. He has never bit his tongue for the Eagles or the media. And if he was mad about this now wouldnt that combined with all the shit the media has said that hes been upset about over the years push him even further into his so called hissy fits to where he couldnt hide his disgust especially right after losing to the patriots.
What have you been choking down that peacock cock so much that you cant open you mouth to admit you got a bad source? Your a hypocrite your always the one calling out the espn’s, draftbible’s, writers, analysts etc. of the world for not admitting when they mess up or get caught hiding something and then you dont let go of it for monthes making smart ass remarks about em every single day.
One other thing about your source was there even one? I mean there probly was but come on that is the easiest thing to make up. Donovan Mcnabb is upset about the signing. Thats what everyone was waiting to see if he was or wasnt going to be upset so your source took a guess on what he thought was the logical answer and you fell for it b/c you were playing catch up. You were out doing your family thing and couldnt get back quick enough to get the scoop so you were willing to believe what ever you were told so you could get your name out there so you didnt miss your 15 seconds of ego time on the biggest nfl story of the year.
See what I did there I made an assumption of what i believed you were thinking with no real evidence except word of mouth(yours by the way) which is deffently more then your source had b/c donovan didnt tell him shit in the middle of the pats game or the locker room or the press confrence. Guessing is not that hard to do.

And ya this is football but thats the difference between philly and the rest of the sports cities there is no difference for us.

“Yeah. The Eagles can win playoff games.”
The Cowboys have won a lot more playoff games than the Eagirls. Like 5 more Super Bowls too, last time I checked. We’ll see if THESE Eagirls and THESE Cowboys can win a playoff game. My money is on the Eagirls ending the season like they have every year since the merger. Out of the playoffs, or with a playoff loss.

“Your fake sanctimonious bullsh*& is tiresome, and about as fake as the tough “persona” you flabby sweaty internet tough guys try to project from your mother’s basements.”
Oh, do you mean like when you say you’re gonna bash somebody’s teeth in with the butt of a rifle?

That joke only gets funnier the more times you use it. Let me get this right, Vick kills dogs, and Philly women are as ugly as dogs, so they have to worry about Vick? Genius! Really. What are you doing on PFT? Hollywood needs writers like you right now!

Not as bad as Charles Manson needs a PR man like you, fat boy.
