Raiders sign Morlon Greenwood, not Derrick Brooks

After recently working out a pair of veteran linebackers — Morlon Greenwood and Derrick Brooks — the Raiders have signed one of them.

Greenwood.

The news comes from Raiderbeat.com, and the move has been confirmed by the team’s official web site.

To make room for Greenwood, the Raiders cut defensive end Derrick Gray.

Greenwood, an eight-year veteran, played four years with the Dolphins and four with the Texans.  After starting ten games last season, Greenwood was cut by Houston on February.

And so Brooks continues to look for a team with which to continue his stellar 14-year career.  He has started every game since 1996; it’s hard to believe that he might not be in someone’s lineup come Week One of the 2009 campaign.

Brooks also has recently worked out with the Saints, who still might sign him.

Seems kind of bizarre that Derrick Brooks hasn’t found a job yet. From most reports, it looks like he still has some gas in the tank, and he’s a seasoned, smart veteran LB. Is he asking for too much money? He is also a bit old, I suppose.

    Whew…
Brooks must really have nothing left.

Tim Ruskell should sign him for depth.

It’s only a matter of time until the Patriots sign him…

I don’t get it either.. last year he was a top 30 LB even at his age.

I’m a huge Derrick Brooks fan and think he’s a first ballot h.o.f. But it seems like the rest of the league is seeing what the bucs saw at the end of last year. Tampa fans are pissed and almost didn’t care that his play was slipping, but please Derrick.. go sign your one day contract with the Bucs and step up to the podium.

Brooks really isnt that old. But it does seem to support the current trend in the NFL that older isnt better. We see it with Rookie contracts and proven seasoned veterans still out there as free agents. I think some teams are fogetting the value of a guy like Brooks. While he may be a slight slower with his first step, his heart and dedication can be inspirational to younger players. He could aslo help rookies acclimate to the NFL level and the celebrity lifestyle and steer them clear of Plaxico Burress type activites.

I suspect that was a joke but, if not, the Patriots pursuing Brooks is unlikely unless they have an avalanche of pre-season injuries. Even then, in am emergency, they are more likely to pull 0ut their rolodex for Seau, McGinest or Colvin. Brooks has been a great player but he’s not a fit in anyone’s 3-4 defense. And even though it is looking like the Pats will play more 4-3 than has been their norm this season, the fact that Brooks does not have 3-4 versatility (he lacks the size for 3-4 OLB or ILB) makes a call from the Pats unlikely.

As a temporary, emergency injury-replacement last season, Junior Seau out played most backup LBs in the NFL and a few of the “starters.” But he was constantly being used as an example of how the Pats’ LB corps was “too old.” And, now, a lot of the same people are mystified that no team has signed Brooks.

36 isn’t really that young in the NFL either…
Interestingly enough though, if you try and find Brooks’ stats on NFL.com you will have to look under Historical Players, not Current Players. Seems the NFL has already made his decision for him.

Another sign that Brooks is done or is not in any kind of shape. Either way ain’t good!

I thought Greenwood was decent playing for the Fins. I believe we let him go because his stock value went up.

raiders do not need help on the weak side. Thomas Howard is a stud. So unless he gets injured no need for Brooks.

I’d say there is a good chance Greenwood won’t even make the team. The Raiders love to pick up vets in camp/pre-season and dump them with the final roster cuts.
