Shawn Andrews probably shouldn't have sounded off

Though we realize that depression is a real problem for many Americans and that the folks who don’t suffer from it tend to stigmatize those who do, Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews would have been wise to not erupt Saturday regarding his perception that those of us with the “ink pens” have made him out to be a “nut case.”

For starters, the media hasn’t made Andrews out to be a “nut case.”

More importantly, his decision to protest this erroneous perception has invited folks who have “put on a jock strap” to chime in regarding the question of whether Andrews is a “nut case.”

Said one league source, “If Shaun Andrews isn’t a nut case he’s the rare exception in a business that rivals Planters for the most nuts.”

Hey, once Andrews regains his Pro Bowl form, maybe he can get the Mr. Peanut endorsement.

Then again, based on our source’s observations, Andrews might have some competition for that specific marketing opportunity.

How is going to a third string kicker for a quote a story?

Mike Florio is ridiculous. The Philadelphia media HAS been critical of Andrews after his latest setback to his back in training camp. Also he did protest against those who HAVE NOT suited up, so that Planters comment by “your source”makes zero sense.
All Shawn said is that people need to chill out on all the “crazy” talk. He’s been PHYSICALLY injured for the last 2 years. During the first injury he battled depression, and handled it. He NEVER acted “crazy” or “unstable”.
When Shawn has played he has been one of the most dominant o-linemen in the league. When his back is healed he will again.
But hey, if there wasn’t a negative lining in a story to be reported on, Mike Florio would still have have to resort to being a subpar lawyer.

According to the eagles website he’s been getting harassed a lot by fans at practice calling him “fraud” so the man just stod up for himself he get a little annoyed, perhaps his frustration was more general and not just at writer/reporters but its really not that big of a deal, defin not worth the multiple posts you’ve given it

What do you mean the media didnt make him out to be a nutcase? Every story since last year when he came down with the depression has been connected by the media to it.
After he came back from the depression and got the back injury all the pen carries where trying to make it appear as if it wasnt the back injury or wasnt just the back injury that was keeping him out. Then this year when his back tightened up once again people tried to make connections to the depression. Every interview hes done since last summer the question of his mental state comes up.
Also there have been multiple stories on here and other website and tv asking if Andrews has the mental toughness to compete for a full year.
He’s saying he has been over the depression for a while but media wont let it go and keep rehashing it back up. So yes he’s right they have made him out to be a mental midget.
Now with saying all that I dont disagree with the media for doing it. Its a way to make money and get more readers, also its a viable question and concern for Eagles fans. But on the other hand you cant get upset with Andrews when he calls you out on it. I tend to believe the man when he says he’s thats over with but im bias.

    Mike,
The other commenters here are correct. The media, which include YOU, have made him out to be a nutcase. Just because you put a disclaimer in the first paragraph doesn’t mean that you are not saying he is a nut.
And the people in Philadelphia who call him a fraud are idiots. They listen to WIP and listen to idiots like Angelo say stupid stuff and act on that. Do some research on depression and try to get to the bottom of it.
Look at all of the players who have problems. Look at Andre Waters.

    He’s prett

  10. mustbechris says: Aug 16, 2009 12:09 PM

He’s pretty nutty. I don’t really care, though, because when he steps on that field, he’s one of the best offensive linemen in the league.
He should’ve kept his mouth shut, but that’s all extracurricular to me. Wins are what matters.

“Hey, once Andrews regains his Pro Bowl form, maybe he can get the Mr. Peanut endorsement.”
There’s nothing worse than a wannabe comedian….Mike, I would clasify this little comment as a giant WHIFF. Its not funny.
Id say something about how depression is a scary, scary thing that is widely misunderstood by the general public but in this forum that would probably be an excercise in futility(See comment#1). Unless youve ever been diagnosed with it then you can never really understand how lonely of a feeling it is to have it. It only gets worse when you constantly have friends and family asking you “what do you have to be depressed about?”
Maybe Shawn Andrews should have chosen Dimensia or BiPolar Disorder, you know something with a real flashy name, then maybe people would be a little less crass. But like I said…seing some of the comments that people drop all over this site I seriously doubt the reaction would be much different.
Anyway…Nice job taking the high road, Florio. Maybe your next comedic piece can be about the Special Olympics or as you may possibly refer to them the “Retard Games.”

He is in Philadelphia, not all fans are (Many posters here are decent, good, understanding people) assholes but the majority of Philadelphia fans are.
I was at SB 39 and the Philadelphia fans would walk up to children in rersturants wearing Patriots jerseys yelling “You guys are gonna get your asses kicked.” and the always classy “F%$k you kid.”
For someone with depression, Philadelphia is the worst possible spot to be.

I need to do spell check before I submit these things, I am just too lazy though.

Has your “league source” every say down and had a conversation with him or just read PFT?
Who cares, it is football. Was Jim McMahon nuts? He won a superbowl

  15. Marc F says: Aug 16, 2009 12:58 PM

    another non- story from florio.

  16. Ralph Gre Nader says: Aug 16, 2009 1:15 PM

If you wanted to be funny, Florio, the headline should have read…
“Id be depressed too if I had to live and work in Philly”
See? Subtle yet to the point.
Mr. Peanut references are rarely funny. Unless of course its tied into a Mike Florio nickname for his genitalia.

  17. Opie says: Aug 16, 2009 1:25 PM

Apples to oranges, besides McMahon was a genius, i remember when he for fined, and paid it in pennies, then he got fined again and paid it in taco bell coupons……Andrews isn’t that smart, nor will he EVER be

by what i’ve read so far,it seems that shaun andrews is having more trouble with the local media than with the rest of the nation
when local fans call him out at a practice field, why should the rest of us in america shoulder the blame for their insensitivity.by the way,it seems that the local press is not very nice either

Exactly. Shaun needs to stop talking to reporters and worrying more about getting back on the field to prove everyone wrong. Depression, back, corn on his toe, whatever. Dominate on the field, and we love you regardless of what you’ve got going on off of it.

  22. mad555 says: Aug 16, 2009 2:41 PM

Wow, Florio you sure do your homework, HUH?
How about you GOOGLE SHAUN ANDREWS and read any article in the past month, since he got injuried, and then re-write what you think about what he said on saturday, again.
What a chump loser you are, Florio.
This is just another reason why you are not looked at as a respected news site.
You are the TMZ of the football world, you know that, right?

  23. EskinSux says: Aug 16, 2009 3:24 PM

Hell………..why bash Florio?……..Andrews has shown time and time again, he doesn’t want to work, doesn’t want to put the time in camp in…..He will use every excuse to avoid camp, and avoid working for a living, he just wants to get paid, show up at lehigh in his tricked out 150,000 ride…. I’m sick of these millionaires acting as if the media is the reason they are malcontents…Why not give a refund of your salary for a job not done?….Donate it to charity that deals with such issues?….The philly media, when he was first diagonsed with depression, hell ,i read more articles about people from all walks of life, from professionals who deal with it… who go to work every day, raise families, and just deal with it. .They were more than inkpens calling you a fraud..They all dealt with the issue, not the reason behind it..But since i’m not a member of the inkpen society, I will call you a damn fraud…..This is not the first depressed person on the planet…..Tell ya what, shut up and play football……..Take your size 17 shoe, and stuff it in your mouth…….Enough excuses……His diatribe against the media was incredibly misguided, nobody questioned his mental state, they just wanted him to get better….Now, his time of being a complete POS is running out, and he has to place blame…Enough BS, you have been paid millions to do a job……DO IT

Mr. Peanut is wrong. Maybe Almond Joy and Mounds, because sometimes he feels like a nut, sometimes he don’t.
