Vick signing limits Favre's opportunities

Many of you have asked, sarcastically (we think), in response to the acquisition of quarterback Mike Vick by the Eagles, “But what does that mean to Brett Favre?”

The reality is that Favre has made it clear (in that inherently vague Favre way) that he might like to end his career with a Roger Clemens-style season, joining a team with half of the work already out of the way.

So Favre’s plan relies on a team being in playoff contention come Halloween or thereabouts, and then losing its starting quarterback to a multi-week injury.

The Eagles were on the short list of the cities in which this approach had the greatest chance of working.

First, Philly runs the same offense as the Packers.  Second, the Eagles should be a contender this year (even though we continue to think the media’s expectations are too high).  Third, quarterback Donovan McNabb has a history of getting hurt during the season.  Fourth, Favre spent seven seasons with Eagles coach Andy Reid in Green Bay, so they have a high level of comfort.

With Vick now in the mix, the chances of Reid turning to someone who has been sitting interchangeably on a tractor and a couch in the event of McNabb going down have dropped significantly.

That said, the chances of it happening weren’t all that high in the first place.  Still, it would now be more than a shock if Favre were to finish his football career in Philly.

  2. Marc F says: Aug 16, 2009 2:03 PM

is there actually a story here? or is this just your ramblings on an otherwise boring Sunday afternoon?

  3. HawgNSonsTV says: Aug 16, 2009 2:04 PM

I say Favre will START a FULL season…and OWN EVERY record!

  4. cliffcla says: Aug 16, 2009 2:04 PM

Wait till the second preseason game when It becomes obvious that Favre is needed.

  5. Akshun says: Aug 16, 2009 2:10 PM

try stretching a little farther for some of these ‘stories’ you write… i think they’re actually more like fairy tails on your part..

  6. myasylum says: Aug 16, 2009 2:11 PM

He could still end up in Minny, who knows?

  7. bosummers32 says: Aug 16, 2009 2:12 PM

Alright. Who bet Monsignor Florio he couldn’t possibly write an article linking Vick and Favre now that Vick was signed? STOP TEMPTING HIM TO MILK THAT COW!

  8. Vick's failed drug test says: Aug 16, 2009 2:14 PM

If Mcnabb goes down, and someone doesn’t think Brett/Andy have a conversation, cheese steak and a beer or twelve, then they are ignorant as the Vick supporters.

  9. CountSnail says: Aug 16, 2009 2:17 PM

Don’t even suggest that, Florio. Vick is a big enough distraction by himself, Favre and Vick in Philly would be a PR nightmare.

Your gonna get some love for that Florio.

  11. EskinSux says: Aug 16, 2009 2:19 PM

Florio……What did you take a mid afternoon nap and this “came to me in a dream” scenerio popped up?…..As much as you post BS, this is the most far fetched yet…..Damn, try …..and you know exhibit the reputable status you’ve aquired…….You have posted 2 million Favre stories, and now this?…..You must have been the worst lawyer ever to give up that income to post this crap……

  12. killachap says: Aug 16, 2009 2:30 PM

OK now I think the guy who approves posts is getting this story posted so they can see how heated the debates get.

  13. Surfdog says: Aug 16, 2009 2:31 PM

Favre is a douchebag. I hope no one calls his fat a$$…

  14. PDXNinerfan says: Aug 16, 2009 2:39 PM

Seeing Chilly continues to beat his stupidity high score each passing day, I still fully expect to see Favre in Minnesota at some point. Do the Eagles even play the Packers?
What I’ve been thinking that could be interesting is the Eagles getting the flak for Vick out of the way, playing him for a couple of pre-season games and trading him right before the season for a high draft pick. Would that be permitted without even paying him a dime? Do they need him so badly or would a 2nd or 3rd round pick for free sound better?

  15. bigjoey46us says: Aug 16, 2009 2:39 PM

Phew…I was almost missing all the Favre posts

  16. GreenAndGold says: Aug 16, 2009 3:12 PM

The Eagles do not play the Packers in the regular season.

  17. MasterShake says: Aug 16, 2009 3:15 PM

He wanted to play in Minny before he signed with the Jets. Pretty sure that was a given. Now he wants to play the Clemens card as Mr. Florio stated. If Mint Rosenfels wins the starting job and gets hurt somewhere around Oct./Nov. what makes anyone think the Vikes won’t go crawling back? If it doesn’t happen, he goes sailing into the sunset on his tractor.
    Odds anyone?

“…..the Eagles should be a contender this year (even though we continue to think the media’s expectations are too high)….”
PFT/MSNBC/FLORIO….Just a quick heads up or FYI in case you didn’t know…..You ARE part of “the media”.
You are on the internet, make radio appearances often, occasional tv spots, have sponsors, support your self and family from the income you make off of writing about football.
It always gets to me when Sports Writers or Politicians call out their brethern in a way that makes it sound like they are not part of it themselves.
    Maybe 20 years ago….before SportsTalk.com….before ESPN….before PFT….before Spint and NBC….before you stopped working as a lawyer.
Now, though you are part of the big system. You are like a worker who gets promoted to management and thinks like he’s still a worker like his old buddies. We all know though that it doesn’t matter what he thinks. It’s what his former buddies think. They might sit and talk about how they know you…. and how you two are “close” etc…but he’ll be saying those things to his “new buds” while drinking beer after work on Friday evenings. Yes, his former workers know better. He’s not one of them anymore. He answers to another power now.
Mike…you stopped being “one of the guys” awhile ago.
Enjoy whatever perks come your way. You deserve it. But, don’t try and act like your still on the “outside” looking in. You are and will continue to be part of “THE MEDIA” for better or for worse.

Ya cmon Florio, let’s not get the Favre crap started again!! Although I find it funny that you mention Clemens, I’ve been saying for 3 years that Favre is the Clemens of the NFL!!

  21. empty13 says: Aug 16, 2009 3:52 PM

but philly does play @IND (preseason), (@CAR, tb,) nyg, dal, @CHI, @NYG, @DAL. all those teams have handled vick pretty well before. he will of course escape having to play tb and @CAR due to the conditions of his re-entry…

(nbc: mike, we think you were being too hard on vick… lighten up a little…)

  22. empty13 says: Aug 16, 2009 4:00 PM

well the philly line could quite realistically blow chunks and get mcnabb and ookie hurt. altho ookie can go get hisself hurt trying to relive his one trip to the NFCCG months in advance.
then philly could go get favre.
however, i see, wherever favre might go, just implementing his own playbook or only using the plays he likes from his team-du-jour’s playbook.
    just like 2008…
after all, he is still a diva.
    /////////////////////
hey pdx i like that idea. trade him to wash…

  23. Hauschild says: Aug 16, 2009 4:12 PM

Love it – people cannot NOT speculate about a potential Favre return. You know why? Because he’s still got lots of game. If he didn’t, nobody would care and he wouldn’t monopolize every NFL conversation.
C’mon, Brett – we need something positive to balance the emboldened socialistic movement!!!

  24. AJD says: Aug 16, 2009 4:36 PM

Wow! How stupid can you be? To even bring up Brett Favre just shows how hard up you are for news now that you sold out. Name the money, I’ll take the bet that your meal ticket doesn’t come back this year.

  25. AmhaTek says: Aug 16, 2009 4:49 PM

McNabb has a history of getting injured during the season, the man got injured twice out of 10 seasons and he has a history. Thats a stretch doing you think?? really i know you need to get some stories out but your turning into a mini ESPN beating a story to death and making one when there isn’t anything. I”m getting sick of this, I miss PFT of old.

  27. Rnay says: Aug 16, 2009 6:25 PM

I almost have to wonder if Brett in his heart of hearts is hoping to get a call or visit from Ted Thompson mid season, begging him to come back if Aaron Rodgers goes down to injury, to rescue the Pack from the sorry prospect of Howdy or Doody (Flynn or Brohm) finishing off not only a losing season but likely his (TT’s) career.
To the less impassioned onlooker, it would make sense from not only a business standpoint (potential revenues) but also a football one. (Brett at 60 years old could still outdo A-Rod’s current backups or any journeymen QBs still out there for the having). It wouild go a long way toward healing the rift in Packer Nation. It COULD just MAYBE give Brett one last shot at the fairytale ending he longs to end his career on.
That said, I think Thompson would suit up and line up under center himself before he let that happen. Sorry, Brett. It’s the Vikings or the John Deere.

  28. tom coughlin's coat holder says: Aug 16, 2009 6:45 PM

what team would be able to fit favre’s salary under the cap?you know he’s not going to play for peanuts, especially with buz cook as his agent.

  29. Great Smoky says: Aug 16, 2009 7:28 PM

I’d rather read idle chatter about Favre, and watch him equivocate from his couch, and tease me with the possibility that he’d come back, than watch or read anything to do with players like Rex Grossman, or Kyle Orton, or Kellen Clemens, or Vince Young… or Bob Avellini, or Mike Phipps, or Rusty Lisch or Andre Ware…

  30. fellorio says: Aug 16, 2009 7:46 PM

That’s assuming the old ‘packer could beat out Adam DiMichele.

  31. Rnay says: Aug 16, 2009 7:53 PM

Oh and PS for any of you you whiz kid inventors out there: there’s a potential fortune to be made if you designed doggy doodoo bags and scoopers in the likeness of Vick. Even those people who think he deserves a second chance in the NFL would think they were kinda funny and to quote the old Gilbert & Sullivan ditty, would make “the punishment fit the crime”! Flea dip? Worm pills? Sanitary napkins? The possibilities are out there!

  32. porter says: Aug 16, 2009 8:09 PM

come on flo…no one asked a thing about Mr. Favre…you just can’t help yourself, so YOU had to bring it up

  33. descendency says: Aug 16, 2009 8:57 PM

Are you trying to anger people Florio?

  34. radioboy20010 says: Aug 16, 2009 9:01 PM

Lets see: a soon to be 40 year old who twice has said he’s had enough will come from the farm and lead a team to the Super Bowl? Considering a top-flight QB needs hundreds of repetitions of practice to be anywhere near accurate, who in their right mind thinks Brent Gump can do that? His arm gave out last year. He’s one year older.
One of the things Gump knows better than anyone is his legacy. He’s done quite a bit to demolish it in the last two years, and all anyone has to do is go find some of the last games of two other greats, Johnny Unitas and Joe Namath to see what happens when you hang on too long.
To update readers: In Wisconsin, when it looked like BF was going to sign with the Vikes, someone came up with “We’ll never forget you…..Brent”.
Pretty funny. Then I watched Forrest Gump and realized the BF followers were just like the folks who ran behind Forrest Gump across the country. Anything the idiot Gump said was national news, even if he said nothing. The folks ran behind him until they realized he really had nothing to offer.
    Thus…Brent Gump was born.
    Good night, and good luck.

Don’t pay any attention to Florio’s b.s. We miss you in the news and on the field (more than I expected). Half of Minn. is still trying to crawl out of a slight depression. I’d really like to see the Vike’s play some inspired football this season and you’re what’s needed. C’mon!
