Cable allegedly punches assistant coach

And just as the Raiders seemed to be getting their chronic dysfunction somewhat under control, the team’s head coach allegedly went Rocky Balboa on one of his employees.

The account of defensive assistant Randy Hanson being cold-cocked at training camp first appeared earlier today at NationalFootballPost.com.  Per the report, Hansen went to a Napa-area hospital for treatment.  The hospital reported the incident to police, as required by law.  (The folks who treated Plaxico Burress last year allegedly overlooked this specific detail.)

Police arrived, but Hanson declined to identify the person who had struck him.

Later in the day, the reason for Hanson’s recalcitrance became clear.

According to Nancy Gay of FanHouse, the punch — of the sucker variety — came from head coach Tom Cable.

Yikes.

Per Gay, Cable allegedly attacked Hanson while Hanson was talking to defensive coordinator John Marshall.

Cable was expected to address the situation after practice on Sunday, but didn’t.

He’s now expected to address the situation after practice on Monday.

But he’d be wise to say nothing.  With Hanson disinclined to push the issue, a public admission would give police more than enough ammunition to prosecute Cable for assault, even if Hanson opts not to do so, for obvious employment-related reasons.

Ain’t no punch like a sucker punch.

Tom Cable should be receiving a raise or a new contract very soon. Way to show us all you are a true Radier.

I don’t know who to be more disappointed with…Cable for being a poor example for young men or the assistant coach for not cracking Cable’s skull in retaliation.

He’s an Al Davis kind of guy. Cable needs to hire Buddy Ryan as d-coordinator. He would take care of his own business. The head coach shouldn’t have to worry about punching lowly assistants. He should only punch coordinators and the occasional star player. That is the problem with the Raiders – no one follows the chain of command.

I wonder what would happen if Cable and Ocho Stinko were in the same locker room. That would be quite a halftime show!

Well in California simple assault is a misdemeanor, unless it occurs in the presence of the officer there cannot be a prosecution without a citizens arrest. If the battery resulted in serious injury; broken bones, need for stitches etc, it will become a felony battery and the district attorney can proceed regardless of the victims cooperation. In light of the fact the revenue from having training camp in Napa is appreciated by the local community I cannot see anything coming of it unless the assistant wants to push it.

Shouldn’t this draw some attention from the Commish?
Normally, fights involving the same team would be a team issue, whether it be two assistant coaches or two players.
However, this is a superior attacking a subordinate.
Cable should receive some punishment from the league.

Well, it seems we know who’s in charge now. I don’t approve of it, but go ahead Tom. The Silver & Black flows within your blood.

  14. Ralph Gre Nader says: Aug 17, 2009 6:59 PM

YES!!!! This is what I live for. All we need now is Janikowski to throw a punch and the “Kick his ass SeaBass” chants can commence.
Ive seen .25 cent beer night at the homeless shelter run more smoothly than this steaming pile of failure.
Dare I say my Cleveland Browns are a better run franchise than these knuckleheads?

Naw. Football coaches fighting each other? And football is such a civilized sport. Perhaps there may be another “fox in the henhouse” and Coach Cable ain’t having it.

That’s not going to motivate anyone, that’s for sure. Nothing positive comes from the coach acting like a thug. Unless maybe you can argue that it takes the focus off of JaMarcus sucking.

  20. DcNinerFan says: Aug 17, 2009 7:08 PM

Awesome. A team of thugs now has a coach to match.
Seriously, that is quite unacceptable, especially in his position…

Now that’s the kind of sane, stable leadership needed in Oakland to turn things around.

Yes. The Oakland Raiders are the worst run franchise in the league, by far.
This is hilarious, and I wouldn’t expect something like it to happen anywhere outside of Oakland.

California’s laws are worthless, some 7 year old wrote them.

First it is reported that a guy is punched…. turns out no punches were thrown.
Coaching staff arguing, maybe a chair was bumped and a guy falls out of his chair and cracks his jaw.
Silly and maybe warrants a little anger management counseling but no “SUCKER PUNCH”.
