Irvin will be dancing with the stars

More than two years ago, Hall of Fame wideout Michael Irvin’s tenure as an ESPN employee ended following a controversial stint as part of the network’s NFL coverage.

Irvin has since redeemed himself through a passionate, memorable Hall of Fame induction speech, and he has been hosting a weekday show on ESPN Radio’s affiliate in Dallas. He won some acclaim for his reality show on SpikeTV, and he also has been part of NFL Network’s Hall of Fame weekend coverage for the past two years.

Now, Irvin will be venturing even farther back into the spotlight, becoming the next pro football player to appear on Dancing With The Stars, which is televised by ESPN’s sister company, ABC.

Irvin joins men like Warren Sapp, Emmitt Smith, and Jerry Rice, each of whom did well in the made-for-TV ballroom dancing competition. Current player Jason Taylor appeared on the show during the 2008 offseason, also excelling.

The move might lead to more play for Irvin, who is capable of being a very good broadcaster, if he behaves more like the guy who delivered that incredible Hall of Fame speech and less like the guy who periodically said stuff on the air that ranged from outlandish to nonsensical.

The show debuts on September 21 with Irvin and 15 others, including Donny Osmond, Tom DeLay, and T.O.'s She-Devil from The Superstars.
