NFC South training camp one-liners

The Falcons lost starting CB Chris Houston to a hamstring injury during Saturday's loss to the Lions.

Rookie Falcons CB Christopher Owens' debut was a mixed bag as he looked strong in coverage overall, but also got beat for a touchdown.

Said Falcons RB Michael Turner, "We were effective in the run game, but we still have to clean some stuff up. We had a tackle for loss on one play. It's early in the preseason so we have time to improve."

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com reports that WR Robert Ferguson looks intent on reviving a career that appeared stalled before the Falcons signed him.

The Panthers defensive tackles figure to get a tough test from the Giants' running game on Monday night.

Monday will also be a big night in the battle for the Panthers' backup quarterback job.

Speaking of the defensive line, Panthers LB Jon Beason said, "We feel good about the young guys, but we definitely need to get a veteran guy in there."

Neither LB Thomas Davis nor RB Jonathan Stewart is likely to play for the Panthers on Monday night.

Malcolm Jenkins lined up at both cornerback and safety during Saints practice on Sunday.

The Saints signed TE Martrez Milner and moved Jeremy Parnell from defensive line to tight end because injuries to Billy Miller and Darnell Dinkins left them with only two healthy tight ends.

To make room for Milner on the roster, the Saints placed LB Mark Simoneau on injured reserve.

QB Drew Brees left the Saints to attend his mother's memorial service, and will rejoin them on Wednesday for a joint practice with the Texans.

Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris was unhappy that his young receivers didn't take advantage of injuries to Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton during Saturday's loss to the Titans.

The Buccaneers expect to have Clayton back for Saturday's game with the Jaguars, along with C Jeff Faine and LB Angelo Crowell.

Morris expressed no concern with the lackluster showing by the Buccaneers on the ground against the Titans.

Although he ran for a 43-yard touchdown on Saturday night, Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson has no interest playing a role in a Wildcat scheme.

Bucs would be making a big mistake if they cut Josh Johnson. This kid throws a nice ball and seems to have alot of poise. But that would mean either keeping four QBs or cutting the loser between Leftwich and McCown. Which, if McCown can't win it this year, he might as well be cut, just for the sake of not wasting anymore of the Bucs' time. But Johnson seems like he could definately develope into a productive QB, only a second year player... don't just toss his out there and watch him become a starter somewhere else.

I would have to agree 100% Johnson looks like a keeper in practice , And first preseason game. I hope they give him a real good look before cutting him .
