ESPN.com’s Sal Paolantonio, an old-school newspaper guy who finally has added the term “blogger” to his resume, recently pointed out the results of a poll at philly.com, the web portal that serves as the online location of both the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News.
The up-or-down question regarding agreement with the signing of Mike Vick by the Eagles generated more than 38,000 responses as of Sunday morning.
A whopping 50.9 percent of the folks responding were against it. 49.1 percent favored it.
The poll is far from scientific, since some of the people casting a “no” vote might not be Philadelphia residents and/or Eagles fans at all — they might be Cowboys, Redskins, or Giants devotees looking to cause trouble.
Regardless, we’ve got a feeling that this debate won’t go away any time soon, and that if the Eagles stink it up this year the struggles will be blamed on the distraction and disruption caused by bringing in Vick, which as Tom Curran reasoned in the wake of the acquisition might be more about charity and redemption than Xs and Os.
Wait until McNabb throws his first bad pass, then everyone in Philly will love Mike Vick.
“The poll is far from scientific…”
Let’s just leave it at that.
Mike this poll is as meaningful as your quest to question NFL team GM’s and decision makers on weather they would consider signing Vick. When Mike Vick throws or runs for a touchdown playing out of a wildcat scheme all adversaries will be quiet.
Unscientific is correct I want to know how many Peta whackos voted and could care less about football….Like the Dems and Repubs do to each other in polls. Bottom line is he converts 1 3rd or 4th and short and converts a 3rd or 4th and goal in the red zone to help win and these “New” Dog days of summer will be long forgotten. Winning heals all wounds
This is a team just now recovering from the distractions caused by TO. So, the brilliant move is to bring in another distraction who most likely won’t help them on the field (really, put him in over Kevin Kolb? When he wasn’t that great to begin with?). All so Andy Reid can feel better. This is not the way to run a football team.
Oh yes, charity and redemption, that must be it! Such a fine Christian organization, those Eagirls! Get busted trying to skirt roster limits, then go right out and get Vick! It’s about desperation.
Actually, I’m surprised more people aren’t happy about signing Vick – I know I’m not. I’ll set aside my personal feelings about Vick, since there are decent arguments on both sides of the let him in/keep him out debate. Maybe he can be an agent for good, like Lurie says, assuming Vick really is sincere (frankly, the 60 minutes interview didn’t convince me that he is).
I’ll also set aside my disgust over the teams hypocracies: only character players, my ass. Also, remember a few years back when they wouldn’t let outside food in the Linc? Oh it had nothing to do with money – it was to protect us from terroism, because everybody knows that al Quida has long sought to acquire nuclear devices that look like hoagies. But now, with one personnel move, they make the Linc target number one for every animal rights group with an axe to grind. I know that it’s unlikely and that probably 99% of them are non-violent or at least not completely nuts, but as Tim McVeigh showed it only takes a few really pissed off extremists to hurt a lot of people.
The thing I hate most though, is -it’s almost like they’ve done what the NFL has been trying to do for years: take all the fun out of the game. How am I supposed to be happy when Vick scores a touchdown? Can I really sing “Fly Eagles Fly” if they win? It’s depressing. If they manage to win the Super Bowl, would I even go to the parade? I’ve invested too much emotion rooting for this team to give up on them now, but it’s getting REALLY hard to keep going. I guess I have a new appreciation for how real Cowboys fans felt when they got Pacman.
Who cares, Philly fans are against everything. The Eagles could go trade a 7th round pick for Tom Brady and Randy Moss and the Eagles would complain that Brady might use too much hair gel, or that one time as a kid he forget to feed his cat one day.
Seriously, F*** Philly fans.
It doesnt matter what the fans think. This is a business decision to try and get to the Super Bowl, and to see if Vick can help accomplish that.
The team will still sell out the stadium regardless of what the fans think
McNabb has the same approval rating.
YAWN!
Here in the burbs 50/50 is generous. Its probably more like 30% for, 50% against, 20% undecided.
That said, 50/50 is probably fairly accurate for the fan base as a whole.
superfan, yes, because Vick never threw a bad pass.
Yea superfan99, that’s until Vick does the same, which wouldn’t take very long. Vick isn’t half the QB McNabb is.
I love how the Cowboys, Skins, and Giants fan angle is thrown in there. Really, what kind of trouble would that stir up? Face it, the majority of America thinks that crooks and felons no longer belong in professional sports. Even in a place like Philadelphia. Stop trying to make excuses. The delusional Vick supporters need to face this reality as well. People are get fed up with thug culture.
Philly is at odds on everything so where is the breaking news.
“When Mike Vick throws or runs for a touchdown playing out of a wildcat scheme”
If Mike Vick does anything out of a Wildcat I’m going to laugh my ass off. You’re gonna take McNabb off the field for Vick? Really? hahahaha
The only poll that will matter to the team is the one people vote in with their money. If tickets and jerseys sell, they won’t give a damn. That’s not picking on the Eagles, it’s just common sense. If Vick starts to hurt their bottom line, he’ll be cut in a heartbeat.
KevinfromPHilly: get hold of yourself man! There are plenty of fans that still root for the Ravens (hating Ray Lewis), Rams (hating Leonard Little), etc. I despise what he did and I won’t root for him, but gotta stick with Eagles. Plenty of players on all teams that fans don’t like, but it’s about team.
Vox: I KNOW you didn’t just get all hypocritical on the Eagles and their fanbase being all christian, etc?!? Nice jab though, but Joe Mays would’ve eaten your fist on that jab!
Mr. T pities the fool. Joe Mays rips the fool’s head off.
That seems to be about the ratio of support/hatred from the people I associate with too (a lot of whom are Falcon fans).
Tons of animal lovers out there that will never forgive him, and tons of us who have had friends and family serve time and come out better people.
It really is possible.
Mike, could you explain please the thought process behind your theory that only “no” votes could come from rivals trying to cause trouble? It makes no sense at all.
Rival teams aren’t upset about this, AT ALL, no matter what the spin doctors and talking heads try to tell us. Vick was easily confused and pressured out of his originally called play back when he was a football player. Now that he’s an ex-convict, he’s got to be extremely rusty in addition to his already legendary stupidity.
If I was an Eagles rival I’d be thrilled that they signed this felon.
But as an Eagles fan, I’m disgusted from both a human and football standpoint.
53% career completion pct. He averaged more yards per rush than per pass. 7.3 vs 6.7 or something close.
McNabb must be worried.
http://www.smackmyvickup.com
People get so bent out of shape with this Vick thing it borders on absurd. Like him, don’t like him… fine but lets not think that suddenly the stadium won’t be sold out or that he is gonna replace McNabb. Try and remain inside the realm of reality on this thing people.

****
What does this even mean? Andy is a mormon and Jeffery/Banner are Jewish?
Don’t Christians believe in forgiveness? Can’t a murderer and pedophile repent on the death bed and still get into heaven?
Yes, they may be desperate. Desperate to win and maybe Andy is afraid to tie his future to Kolb after seeing him. McNabb has carried Andy through his career. The Giants defense is already scared of Vick (ask Osi and Tuck).
The Eagles aslo did not get busted trying to skirt roster limits (a practice that other teams employ). The contract got nullified because the AFL team would not let him out of it and it had a no NFL clause.
Try again.
Why exactly do we look at football and pro sports as a moral compass?
I actually do not care about Vick playing – even if it was the Cowboys. He did his time and lost a lot. If an organization is willing to take the PR hit on it than sobeit. I have always thought both Vick’s were jerks and do not like them. But, I did enjoy watching Vick run and be able to throw 60 yards on a rope (insert prison joke here).
VoxVeritas…. might want to look into researching things before he writes about them.
Maybe there should be an article about how the Eagles will fit him onto the roster.
Specifically how KOLB feels about the fact the he will be the third QB and deactivated every game. Vick cannot be third QB or he cannot come in for any plays.
Kolb still could be the backup out of the third spot bu only if McNabb goes down – not to return.
Are we really still talking about this piece of crap. He’s back lets just leave it at that, when he does nothing for the Eagles or any other team for the rest of his playing time, the so called haters will have all the prof they need. Silence is sometimes the best way to address a useless un-human piece of sh|t like him. No remorse accept that is cause a interruption in his life and millions of dollars, just the kind of guy we would all want for a role model, great call God-ell.
There was a typo in your article. The corrected sentence is as follows:
“they might be Cowboys, Redskins, or Giants devotees, or Mike Florio, looking to cause trouble.”
“Vox: I KNOW you didn’t just get all hypocritical on the Eagles and their fanbase being all christian, etc?!?”
No, I just said that it wasn’t about redemption and whatever. If they were about redemption, they would have done better by helping Philly’s 200,000 ex-cons that can’t get a job piloting a broom, much less an NFL football team.
“VoxVeritas…. might want to look into researching things before he writes about them.”
What are you talking about?
the only positive thing i can say about vick is that he did a fair amount of time.
Kolb could be the back up and the POS Vick could still be active.
A 3rd qb doesn’t have to be in active…
Vick wasn’t a very good QB to begin with. Do you think the Falcons are better off now than they were 2 years ago? The moral issue aside, it isn’t a great football decision.
The only football benefit I can imagine is if the Eagles could get some team to give up a decent draft pick in 2010 for the guy. Otherwise, it just doesn’t make any sense.
Hide your begle vicks and egurl
From the clink to the link same thing
Though the food was better in the clink
And for the morons who say what does it matter what the fans think
No fans no money no games so the fans mean a lot
I have a sign posted on my door no egurl fans allowed pitbull on premises
Hope he plays againest the Giants so he can have that prison feeling of being someones bitch
This is the same unbiased paper that ran the headline “Hide Your Dogs” on Friday. Bunch of nonsense.
This 3rd QB thing needs to be addressed, Vick can be the “3rd String Qb” without being listed as a 3rd string QB, we would just have to occupy one of the 45 active game day roster spots. However if that is the case, he could play at any point in the game, regardless of McNabb or Kolb. The 3rd QB rule only applies to a designated 3rd QB who is allowed to dress but technically is the 46th player dressed, not the 45th.
It works this way with Randel El since he could technically be your 3rd string QB and play the entire game as a WR.
“The Eagles aslo did not get busted trying to skirt roster limits (a practice that other teams employ). The contract got nullified because the AFL team would not let him out of it and it had a no NFL clause.”
The AFL is defunct. It’s out of business. It folded. We might as well be talking about the Canton Bulldogs or the Tonawanda Kardex. Congrats, you ate the bullshit they were trying to feed you and you asked for seconds.
We all all still sing “Fly Eagles Fly” as soon as the man touches paydirt…..I love the Eagles, when we win the SB this year and next year we can say at least we didnt have to Belicheat to win…..Just everyone of us had to give up a tiny piece of ours souls to Satan………Shit I have been offering him the whole thing for the last 10 years……This is a bargain!!!!!!!
BTW WHYDICK or WYDOK who cares if there was one typo get a real life_
Just remember……….Fly Eagles Fly, On the Road to victory, Fly Eagles Fly, Scores a Touch down 1,2,3, Hit em low (especially Brady) Hit em High and watch our Eagles Fly…….Fly Eagles Fly on The ROOOOOAAAADDD TTOOOOO LOOOOOMMMMMBBBAAARRRDDDIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!

Don’t laugh too hard. McNabb’s career completion percentage is 58.9 and his per pass average is very Vick-like (6.8 to Vick’s 6.7).
Theres a POLL making its rounds through facebook that of which I said ‘no’. I’m a dolphins fan but don’t agree with the idea of him getting a huge payday from the eagles. Would much rather him claw his way up from the UFL. Thats my person opinion.
Philly fans are such baffoons……….you have one of the best QBs in league in McNabb and you are too stupid to realize it……..all the while, you love the Vick signing and think people will want him to take McNabb’s place…….Give me a break. Vick cannot hold McNabb’s jock!

Outsyder, you missed my point. Because once Vick throws a bad pass, then everyone in Philly will love Kevin Kolb. Once Kolb throws a bad pass, everyone will want Koy Detmer back.
I live in Eagles country, there isn’t a lot of patience here.
“Except, of course, the Giants who have already said that they are scared.”
Courtesy. They din’t really expect anyone to be stupid enough to believe it.
Typical Florio. He cannot bear the fact that the poll is not overwhelmingly against the signing of Vick – so he resorts to desperate, one-sided speculation to discredit the approval votes. This, despite the fact that – based on what we’ve seen – the more passionate people who would feel a greater compulsion to vote in this poll tend to be firmly and passionately against Vick.
Don’t tell me that the PETA fanatics and “doglovers” nationwide (or even worldwide) are above “flooding” that poll with their disapproval votes. This scenario seems more likely than some Dallas, Redskins, or Giants fans taking the time to vote in that poll.
I know Florio likes to think of himself as possessing a superior logical mind – but…um, he FAILS with this.

Sorry Vox, but the team that he was on is not yet defunct. They may be trying to get into a new league.
Anybody who believes that they’re bringing in Vick to replace McNabb is CRAZY!!! If you pay attention this looks like the NFL needed a favor and we benefitted from it. They needed Vick to go to an organization who can develop/tranisition him as an quarterback and the front office to deal with all the BS. In return we get a new weapon if everything works out, if not we cut him. Trust that this is a win win situation for the Eagles.

Have you checked their game day or stadium operations staff? And one stat you left off when comparing the two: QB Rating (85.9 to 75.7) DNabb.

I want to thank you for putting your character above your loyalty to the Eagles. You are so much more decent people than flyseagullfly81. I know how strongly I feel for my team and wondered how I could ever accept that horrible human on my team. You, at least, had the courage to admit it troubles you. I hope you find a way to enjoy your team this season and, maybe, Vick will be a non-factor. There are good people in Philly. As a Giant fan, I hope we meet in the playoffs.

Me too. I cannot wait to see Antonio Pierce trying to catch Vick.
I think Kevin from Philly has read my mind. I’m struggling with this scumbag and how the Eagle’s have ruined my excitement for the upcoming football season. Vick’s face is everywhere you turn, people are buying up his jersey (which I don’t understand paying $100 for a backup QB jersey, but that’s just me) and he’s getting coverage on every single channel, I hate it. He’s got his second chance at life with his freedom, why can’t he just go away someplace out of the spotlight.
Vick’s Approval Rating = Vick’s Passer Rating
@smush Rottenrigez
I would take TO over your psychopath any day. It is stunning for me to just say that. Someone, actually, is more of a scumbag than the loathsome TO. You can pretend all you want, but you have Vick and all the rest of us are so relieved we don’t. I said there were, at least, two nice people in Philly. You have shown me you are not one of them.
@pitowner0410
Just be thankful you are not smush. You could have that going against you, also. Try to find solace in all the other players on your team who deserve your support. They did nothing wrong and hope you do not find them guilty by association.I sense Andy could not save his own sons and this his redemption, too.
Let’s wait and see what value he adds to the team. I do understand the concern but it must be tough for him to step out in to the spotlight after what he’s done really, put yourself in his shoes right now. There are always going to be people that are critical of the decision and Mike Vick but what NFL player has a 100% approval rating by the hometown critics?
If he will “sit” and “stay” on the bench until told to “fetch” the ball without “rolling over,” I’m sure Philly fans will give him a bone.

Talk about eating the spoon-fed bullshit. Don’t believe what Osi and Tuck SAID, heavens no. They’re only your star defensive players.
There are always going to be people that are critical of the decision and Mike Vick but what NFL player has a 100% approval rating by the hometown critics?
==================================
Are you kidding? Your analogy means that a murderer should be approved, no more or less, than a number 1 pick who never reaches his potential. You want me to put myself in his shoes. First, you put yourself in the paws of the dogs he butchered. He didn’t just kill dogs. He murdered them in the most Nazi-oriented ways. I wonder how you would feel if there was actual video of him hanging a dog by the neck. Yes, they were dogs, but how many of you realize that is Ted Bundy territory. I have no doubt he has the potential to graduate to more heinous acts.
Back in April he had a hearing over his financial plan. His lawyers told the judge Vick wanted the first $750,000 of a future NFL contract to go to him. Only then, could his creditors receive their due. Yes, I see the remorse welling in his eyes.
@jackass138
Are you really that stupid to think Osi and Tuck are scared of Michael Vick? It is typical of what is wrong with many Philly fans. Do you notice they always talk about what they are going to do? They do not have a modicum of success in the past to throw in our faces. So, they can only trash talk about how successful teams are fearing their latest loser. It is what my aunt calls the, “I’m a gonna” mentality. Too bad it leads to the “I’m a failure” reality.
The Giants, Cowboys, and Redskins have all won multiple Super Bowls. The only NFC east team to have zero(0), zilch, nada, goose egg Super Bowls is Philly. The biggest mouths have the least right to brag.
Look.
I didn’t MAKE UP what Osi and Tuck said. They said it. They didn’t say anything about SB rings that happened IN THE PAST.
They’re talking about planning for Vick in the future. I didn’t say they were bad players. They’re your best D-linemen!
You can change your opinion, but you can’t change the facts, and you can’t take back what Osi and Tuck said. They didn’t say “Vick scares us” but the certainly didn’t act as if it wasn’t a factor to plan for.
Way to fall back on the SuperBowl argument, though. Who took your team out in the playoffs last year? Oh, right.
