California Redwoods announce 31 players

We interrupt the ongoing coverage of the Second Annual Brett Favre Unretirement to share some far more intriguing (eye roll) news.

The California Redwoods have announced 31 players who’ll enter training camp with the team next month.

Who are the California Redwoods?  They’re the UFL team based in San Francisco, coached by the man who used to lead the Vikings twice per year against the team’s new quarterback.  (And we’re not talking about Mike Tice.)

The only names we recognize are running back Obafemi Ayanbadejo, receiver B.J. Sams, and running back John David Washington, the son of Denzel Washington.

At quarterback, for now?  Liam O’Hagen of Harvard and Brett Dietz of Hanover.

Um, when in the hell is this league going to call Jeff George?

i thought this was “PROFOOTBALLTALK” maybe i missed it but did you give updates on the XFL too.
as for this paragraph “Who are the California Redwoods? They’re the UFL team based in San Francisco, coached by the man who used to lead the Vikings twice per year against the team’s new quarterback. (And we’re not talking about Mike Tice.)”
stop trying to be a writer just report rumors

I thought this was PRO football talk.

I know this is and not but I think I can speak for 110% of the readers and say don’t waste any PFT resources on UFL stories. We don’t care and the we probably includes the players of the UFL.

You’re all a bunch of babies, don’t click on the article if you don’t want to read it. Get your own blog and you can leave out what YOU want.
Patsfan you speak for yourself and that’s it.

Don’t listen to the haters — lots of us like the UFL news. It’s interesting, and if it succeeds in becoming a true NFL minor league, it will become increasingly relevant.

  8. jkc710 says: Aug 18, 2009 1:10 PM

you care less about hearing about the UFL than about the in-depth reports on the Players Association collective bargaining agreement?

Thus concludes our token, throwaway, non-Bratt story.

I will rarely stand up for Florio but you guys must be joking. This league is fielding guys who were contenders to play in the NFL and will likely become a feeder system for it. We all know there is not enough profootball product so we should all want to see it succeed.

@ BNSteel says: ” This league is fielding guys who were contenders to play in the NFL ”
since when is denzel washington’s kid a contender for an NFL roster spot? or how about Liam O’Hagen? How many players made the jump from nfl europe or CFL or the XFL, and became good players? maybe 5, if you want UFL news start UFLTALK.COM

I am very interested in the UFL. And I’m glad that Denzel’s son is a professional football player. Plus, that is smart because his father will be attending some of his games.
Celebrity appeal is nice to have.

I heard a similar report about the Maui Rosey Palms.

I do recall way back in the day that Florio had a post about the fact that he was covering the XFL. If I remember correctly, Florio’s reasoning was as long as players were getting paid, it’s professional. Also, as long as the league wasn’t “fake” like the XFL founder’s WWE, he’d cover it.
Also notice that there are occaisional blurbs concerning the CFL and AFL.

How do you know that Jeff George didn’t get a call and just hasn’t called back?

  17. the real deal says: Aug 18, 2009 2:03 PM

good post! good update! good story!

  18. Bo Knows says: Aug 18, 2009 2:05 PM

    newbies of PFT:
Florio does UFL news because he’s always covered the UFL on this site. In fact, my first knowledge of the UFL came from an article in the rumor mill posted by Florio about Mark Cuban owning a share of an amateur football league.
If you don’t want to read it, ignore it.

  19. Mattmanus says: Aug 18, 2009 2:05 PM

The UFL could be a pro league. I for one like to get an occaisional story about the UFL.

  20. seaner44 says: Aug 18, 2009 2:12 PM

you are all aware that UFL is a pro league right? When you get paid to play sports you are a pro, no longer an amature, the CFL and former XFL are also pro leagues, hence the term PROFOOTBALLTALK (not NFLTALK), also take note that the non pro league already has it’s own page… CFT

I guess I’m the only house bound agrophobe to watch NFL Europe to check on the players designated from my team to play there. Keep up the UFL updates Florio, I ‘ll be watching.

redwood, sounds like my dog lewis when he gets excited.

  23. juggadore says: Aug 18, 2009 2:41 PM

i am way more interested in ufl news than stupid crap like “brett favre just boarded a plane” and “brett favre just got out of an SUV” and stupid junk like that. what is this, tmz?
look, he’s going to be a viking. thats all i care about. he’s not going to be good because he only had 1 good season out of the last 5 or so.
and STOP CALLING HIM LORD! youre as bad as anyone else making this guy into a god. he cant play. get over it.

  24. jeffjewell says: Aug 18, 2009 3:16 PM

Finally! A professional football team in the Bay Area!

  25. pomppu says: Aug 18, 2009 3:52 PM

I’m definitely interested in the UFL news. Especially this one, since Brett Dietz played in my home country, Finland, for one summer for the Turku Trojans. His career has taken a gigantic rise after that. Back then he was playing in front of crowds of 200-400 persons and probably got paid about 1000 bucks a month + meals + accommodation.
