Favre to Minnesota rumors run rampant

Before we go any farther (further? . . . little help? . . . anyone?) with this one, we need to point out that this is a rumor mill.

While we at times pass along hard news and opinion and analysis and speculation and stuff other than rumor, at other times we pass along just rumor.

And the rumor that’s currently making the rounds in rampant fashion is that Brett Favre will be joining the Vikings soon.

As in very soon.

As in today.

Several readers claim that Zygi Wilf’s plane is waiting to whisk Favre from Hattiesburg to Minnesota.  We’ve got no idea whether any of it is accurate, but the rumor is spreading, quickly.

We’ve tried to determine whether Wilf’s plane is indeed in Hattiesburg.  As best we can tell, the tail number is N18MV.  The plane is registered to Short Hills Aviators of Short Hills, New Jersey.  And that makes sense, since Wilf built his real estate empire in that neck of the woods.

Unfortunately, the plane with that specific tail number has been blocked from tracking via FlightAware.com.

[UPDATEHere’s a photo of it.]

So stay tuned.  The smoke is building.  All that remains is determine whether there will be a fire.

If there is, Favre could be introduced at Friday night’s preseason home opener against the Chiefs, and then make his debut on August 31 at Houston, in a game that coincidentally will be televised nationally by ESPN.

Is this a joke? You are now reporting rumors that the media (you) are reporting rumors? Is that chicken/egg or tail wagging dog? I can’t remember.

Mark Rosen from the local CBS affiliate just stated on the PA show on KFAN that “the trust Ihas in this source leads me to believe that Brett will be a Viking by days end”

“Before we go any farther (further? . . . little help?”
it’s actually more appropriate in this instance to use the alternative phrasing “farv-ther
    Just for this particular story.

    SERENITY NOW!!!

  13. William Wallace says: Aug 18, 2009 11:04 AM

    It’s “further.”
So, Favre was sitting around Sunday night, watching 60 Minutes and just couldn’t stand someone else’s quarterback-comeback story?
    What a drama queen…

  14. mpseattle says: Aug 18, 2009 11:04 AM

How convenient that the biggest attention whore in football is timing his supposed re-un-retirement just in time for a nationally televised game.

“Before we go any farther (further? . . . little help?”
actually in this case the alternative “Farv-ther” is the most appropriate. But only for this story.
And BTW, this is definitely a done deal, and Farv-ther just wanted to be able to skip training camp, like most every other veteran who is on the last year or 2 or their careers.

Farve, Farve, Farve…., how about something on the collective puckering of Sage and Tavaris?

  17. rasalas says: Aug 18, 2009 11:08 AM

“Farther” is always and only used for physical distance. (Remember it using “travel far.”)
“Further” is used in every other instance.
So this post should have begun, “Before we go any further … .”

Finding Forrester quote says it best
“You said that my skills reached “farther” than basketball. “Farther” relates to distance, “further” is a definition of degree. You should have said “further”.”

want to guess he saw the adulation that serial dog killer ookie got, and figures he can make 5-6 times as much…
or the vikes decided they would pay brett and the bus what they want… just so they dont have to flip a coin to pick their starter?

This site states that Ziggy uses Short Hills Aviators at least…

  21. Rnay says: Aug 18, 2009 11:10 AM

I think you can get away with farther or further. Further is more commonly used.
If we’re talking grammar and spelling, though, could you PLEASE quit using “it’s” for “its”.
The rule my profs told me is that if you cannot substitute the words “It is” and have it make sense, then use “its”.
PS Devils Advocate and the Favre haters are approaching, I can hear their cloven hoofs in the distance. but for those of us who like to watch football for FUN, this is gonna be a great day.

  22. Triumph40 says: Aug 18, 2009 11:12 AM

Honestly, who cares? Favre is a selfish prick who thinks the attention should be on him at all times. I don’t care when he signs because he will be a very mediocre QB at best. The Vikings will be a run-heavy offense as long as Adrian Peterson is on this team. Just go away Brett Favre. GO AWAY!!!!!

  23. Big Stretch says: Aug 18, 2009 11:14 AM

This seems a little early for Favre. I figured he would wait long enough to sit out the entire preseason. Everyone knows that Favre is only concerned with himself, and has very little concern for teamates, fans, ownership …etc.
If this is true then i feel bad for the vikings, who as returning NFC north champs really don’t need him to repeat, and if you are gonn comment about needing him for the playoffs marinate on this 4-6 in last 10 playoff games 0-3 on the road during that time one of those games played at MIN

    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha…
    You are going to LOSE!

    SERENITY NOW….INSANITY LATER!

  27. orcslayer69 says: Aug 18, 2009 11:36 AM

Farther has to do with distance. Further is the correct use.

  28. Rumur says: Aug 18, 2009 11:39 AM

It is blocked from FlightTracker, but not on Aeroseek.
    Aeroseek shows the following:
    Flight: N18mv
    Status: In Flight
    Departure: Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional (KPIB)
    Time: 09:09
Arrival: St.Paul Downtown Holman Field (KSTP)
    Time: 11:18
    Aircraft F2TH

  29. mpseattle says: Aug 18, 2009 11:46 AM

I’m not a Packer fan, I just think Favre’s an attention whore and should stay retired when he says he’s retired.

Prof. Mike Florio: [to Jamal] Perhaps your skills do reach farther than basketball.
    Jamal: “Further”
    Prof. Mike Florio: What?
Claire Spence: [whispered to Jamal] Don’t…
Jamal: [to Florio] You said that my skills reached “farther” than basketball. “Farther” relates to distance, “further” is a definition of degree. You should have said “further”.
Prof. Mike Florio: Are you challenging me, Mr. Wallace?
Jamal: Not any more than you challenged Coleridge.

“While we at times pass along hard news and opinion and analysis and speculation and stuff other than rumor, at other times we pass along just rumor.” (per Mr. Florio).
Perhaps I should have been more clear in my opinion.
The recent posts of drama infused speculation with no factual basis, or worse a misrepresented interpretation of what was actually said/done, is what I find annoying.
Rumors that have factual basis or actual sources = no problem.
In light of Mr. Florio’s post within a post (above)and the return this morning to more factual based rumors, I whole heartedly apologize.
99% of the time, Mike et al. posts good stuff.
