On Monday, we learned that Marvin Harrison wants to play football again. Just don’t expect it to happen with the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans are not pursuing the 36-year-old, according the Nashville Tennessean. The Titans are happy with veterans Nate Washington and Justin Gage, and must be encouraged by rookie Kenny Britt’s progress.
If one of them went down, the team lacks depth and Harrison would fit on paper. But it sounds like the team is more likely to add a veteran to the mix that will fit into a deep reserve role.
That’s one of the problems with Harrison finding a team. He doesn’t just need a job, he probably needs a starting job because teams will want their reserves to play special teams.
No, but the Ravens should!
Closet Thug…Teams don’t want there receivers dropping to the fetal position to avoid contact.
Can anyone explain why Detroit wouldn’t take a look at Harrison? Plenty of cap space, and if you have Stafford throwing to Calvin Johnson and Marvin Harrison, with Pettigrew at TE and Kevin Smith as your primary RB, suddenly you have a viable offense. If I was in their front office, I would be working night and day to bring Shaun Rogers back, and to lock down Marvin Harrison.
mlegue810: Because a roster spot spent giving Marvin Harrison an uninspiring final year is a roster spot that could otherwise be spent on a young guy who might develop into a player for you.
That goes ESPECIALLY for Detroit, who aren’t going to the playoffs this year. They need to develop young talent, not waste time on veterans who aren’t going to be around.
Matt Jones to KC or Det makes more sense. Dude needs his second chance now.
Marvin Harrison will end up being Michael Vick’s bodyguard. There’s plenty of people that hate Vick, but they’ll shut up when Harrison points his gat at them.
What about the Giants? I know they just blew a pretty big amount cash on that Eli Manning contract, but they could probably pick Harrison for only a bit more than an already low veteran contract. They have quite a few potential WRs as it is, but these are only potential. Barden and Hixon are still young guys without much immediate experience. Either one could possibly have a coming out party this year like Desean Jackson did, but as organization I wouldn’t bank on that happening. Sinorice Moss and Steve Smith are pretty good, I suppose, but they aren’t that “safety valve” (a term that gets thrown around all the time) like Plaxico Burress or even Amani Toomer was. Harrison could be that go to guy in a pinch. I don’t know if he could still demand double coverage, though.
@mlegue810:
Because he shoots people!
Oh, I’m sorry, you said Detroit. I’m really not sure, that’s a great question!
He’ll be in for a physical on Thur for the Vikings.
@ Legion
Who says they aren’t making the playoffs this year? I look for Stafford to have a Matt Ryan kinda year, and with Harrison and Johnson at WR’s with Pettigrew and Smith would be a really great move for the franchise….While their defense may not be great, their offense could pull in 9 wins, and in that division, who knows…
Giorgio:
I have to agree with Legion that the Lions won’t see the playoffs this year. With Aaron Rodgers getting comfortable and Green Bay’s offense having a chance to gel during training camp, they are going to be a real threat this year. Also, we can’t forget His Majesty Lord Favre of Douche-ington stepping in to an already high powered offense in Minnesota. So that only leaves us to fight it out for 3rd with a faultering Bears team.
I still think taking a one year flyer on Harrison would be a good move for Detroit though, simply because he gives us a better chance to win more often. It would do a lot for the morale in the locker room and in the stands to see as many wins as possible. Also, we might actually get to see some games on TV this year…
