Dungy goes to bat for Marvin Harrison

Former Colts and Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy, who will serve as an analyst on NBC’s Football Night In America (did we mention it’s on NBC?), has been instrumental in the reinstatement and redemption of Mike Vick.

Now, Dungy is going to bat for former Colts receiver Marvin Harrison, who was cut in February and who has since generated no serious interest.

Marvin can play the game,” Dungy told ESPN Radio Chicago (via USA Today).  “Marvin
can get open and catch the ball.  Marvin’s whole thing is precision.  And
he’s the guy that needs work in a system, you know.”

So with the Bears apparently struggling to find quality receivers, should coach Lovie Smith be interested in Harrison?

“I think he definitely can play and I would encourage Lovie to sign him if they had that opening,” Dungy said.

On pace a couple of years ago to break Jerry Rice’s all-time receiving records, Harrison has struggled with knee problems since then.  He also has a vague cloud of suspicision hovering over him regarding two separate shootings in Philadelphia, on in April 2008 and another in July 2009.

So Harrison should be signed soon. If Dungy can con the Eagles into signing Vick, Harrison should get a job in no time.

Hey, Coach Dungy! If I kill something, can you help me with one of them there redemption contracts for a million plus? I have been a bad boy. I am sorry.

  7. realityonetwo says: Aug 19, 2009 9:59 PM

I’m sick of dungy. First he helps a dog torturer get a job, now a guy who wielded a gun and shot two people. How about helping somebody who takes care of his family and actually needs the money?

Hey… Rev. Al Dungy, are you another one that doesn’t know what retirement means. I have 2 words for you and it’s not ” let’s dance “.

He’s picking the biggest lowlifes around to pimp, he should keep out of it.
I’ve lost all respect for Dungy.

Marvin harrisons been in no trouble b4 this, a model teammate and he hasn’t even been charged yet. How do all u posters feel about big ben?
You guys are clowns, dungy coached this guy for how many years? Of course he’s going to go to bat for him, they probably have a relationship.

Wait, can’t be, because of the way he threw Belichick under the bus.

Sounds like St. Tony needs a job. He’s got way too much time on his hands. I think the Raiders might be looking for a new coach soon.

Dungy would go to bat for a child molester.
As long as he’s not white. Or gay.

How about Dungy helps out the steelers Ben and his false allegations? Oh wait, he is not the right color….

  16. piccolo says: Aug 19, 2009 11:01 PM

Tony, I like you, you were a great coach, you beat my Bears, and you always have seemed to have a great heart. You deserve to be in the Hall of Fame and will be one day.

But you’re turning out to be a reincarnation of Jesse Jackson. That’s not racist. It’s getting to be a trend. What about (TE) Matt Jones? Awesome talent. He made bad choices and snorted cash up his nose. He’s not signed, he didn’t happily support mutilating and murdering any animals, and he hasn’t been related to any shootings that has been reported. What about supporting a white guy?

Seriously, I get what you’re doing (however I thought it was to be with disadvantaged kids, not millionares) but share your support with all. Why can’t you get the Colts or Bucs or even Steelers to take any of these guys? They’re not buying in? What’s up? Since you’ve chosen a new career to spout off about players that have had a troubled past please explain why you are currently not supporting all races. If I’m wrong I apoligize but I haven’t read anything to the contrary.

  17. AmishGangsta says: Aug 19, 2009 11:16 PM

You Dungy haters are hilarious. First, he goes to bat for Vick because hes asked to, now he sticks up for one of his former players, and for that he’s a piece of shit? Huh…? How exactly does that work? You people are a piece of work. Get a freakin life, or at least stop letting jealousy run your own.

  18. piccolo says: Aug 19, 2009 11:34 PM

AmishGansta and Meezle … let’s see who Dungy sticks up for next and go from there. He’s not a piece of crap and I don’t get the jealousy comment. I do not doubt he does things to support those he said he would when he retired (that we unfortunately don’t hear of) but he does need to balance his public support of players.

  19. Farves sweet Hair says: Aug 19, 2009 11:38 PM

  20. meezle says: Aug 19, 2009 11:38 PM

Amishgangsta, they are retarded. Since when has matt jones been a great talent? They didn’t cut him completely bcus of his off field antics, he stinks. He had one semi decent season now he’s a great talent?
Besides he is a criminal, marvin hasn’t been convicted or hell even charged with a crime. He didn’t have a troubled past at all and what has dungy done to help him? What other player has dungy helped with a troubled past?
Mgs157 he isn’t helped ben bcus ben already has support of espn, clown. How do you know the allegations are false, typical jerkoff, know all know nothing. I’m not saying he’s guilty but I’m not saying the allegations are false.
You guys, I mean boys, are pathetic

  21. AmishGangsta says: Aug 19, 2009 11:39 PM

massappeal said-wait, cant be, because of the way he threw belichick under the bus. And there you have it, folks. 90 percent of the Dungy hate here comes from jilted, Belicheat knob polishing FOOLS like this one. They just cant stand it that Tony would DARE call out their cheating scumbag coach for the dirty rotten sociopath that he is. Lmfao.

  22. MasterShake says: Aug 19, 2009 11:49 PM

So those of you that have problems with posters calling out Dungy on his lack of colorblindness would have absolutely no problem if Cow or Holm started a support group for “white” players that needed their help to re-establish their careers?
Racist or prejudiced is a fine line. Ask Matt Jones.
Something smells with Dungy and I thought the world of this guy. If you drop two y’s from his name and replace them with an o and a f, you get:
    Ton of Dung.

  23. Jackal138 says: Aug 20, 2009 1:19 AM

Exactly, AmishGangsta. It’s all jealousy, plain and simple, these poor fools can’t stand a man who acts with conviction and in good Christian faith.
Probably because these posters are so petty and hollow, derision is more appealing than understanding. That’s not the case with Dungy, and it eats them up to see it.
    No good deed goes unpunished.

Not only does Tony Dungy probably not have any kind of relationship with Matt Jones, Matt Jones has not proven anything at the NFL level. He’s no different than any other young athlete who “had potential”.
That is not to say that Matt Jones will not make it in the league — I’m sure he’s quite capable. But his few years with the Jaguars do not compare to the careers and extraordinary talent of either Marvin Harrison or Michael Vick; nor, might I add, is Matt Jones’s situation as prominent in the eye of the public as is either aforementioned receiver.
Look, I’m sure Tony Dungy wants young black men to succeed, but let’s not make a race issue where there’s really not one. I’m sure he’s show the same support for Peyton Manning and John Lynch.

  25. AmishGangsta says: Aug 20, 2009 5:01 AM

Piccolo- chill out dude. The fact that Tony stood up for and helped out Vick and Harrison does not mean he’s never helped out a white person. The man works with MANY charities that do good for ALL people, regardless of color. Don’t let these pathetic Cheatriot fools form YOUR opinion with their petty hate. Be larger than that, man.

  26. whosthisguy says: Aug 20, 2009 5:11 AM

    Then……the middle east…..

  27. BlackBerryStorm says: Aug 20, 2009 6:58 AM

@realityonetwo…..here is some reality for you. You have to have some talent and/or an identifiable skill…….I mean other than “tea bagging”!!
@piccolo…Matt Jones is an “awesome talent”???? Before showing yourself to be a complete idiot again, you may want to go back and check his stats.
Dungy was asked by GODdell to take Vick under his wing and mentor him….. Why?? Because even dumba$$ Roger knows Vick in the NFL means revenue generation period

  28. whywerule says: Aug 20, 2009 7:18 AM

Exactly, AmishGangsta. It’s all jealousy, plain and simple, these poor fools can’t stand a man who acts with conviction and in good Christian faith.
Good Christian faith? Do you really believe that Jesus would believe that homophobic people like Dungy exhibit good Christian faith?
And please do not reply that Dungy is just following the bible’s teachings. If Dungy was true to the bible’s teachings, he would not have worked on so many Sabbaths during his career.

  29. Quagmire says: Aug 20, 2009 7:19 AM

Maybe Marvin Harrison should have taken the offer he had from the Colts…well that & not shoot anyone.

  30. AvoidLLOYD says: Aug 20, 2009 7:42 AM

Why doesn’t Obama just let Dungy tout the National Healthcare Plan, if he can get Vick on a team as well as Harrison then that should be a cake walk…

  31. mlegue810 says: Aug 20, 2009 7:50 AM

Dungy is just trying to do the right thing by providing guidance to a group of guys who wouldn’t otherwise have someone to look up to. Think about it, if you were young, super rich, and one of the world’s most elite atheletes, who would be your role model? Or for that matter, who would go to bat for you?
Kudos for helping these guys find work. I still want to see Marvin Harrison work out for Detroit if you’re reading this thing, Dungy. Hell, we’ll take a look at Edge and Deuce, too. Even if we don’t sign them, it would give our front office some more credibility if they were at least kicking the tires.

  33. gopher says: Aug 20, 2009 8:20 AM

It seems like a lot of people are going nuts about what Dungy is doing, please keep in mind he is repected and is now a talking head for NBC and what he says will drive up ratings. He also is concerned about Favre joining the Vikings. Please remember he is respected as a person and as a Hall Of Fame coach in waiting even though he only won one Super Bowl with the best qb around.

  34. Fan_Of_ Four says: Aug 20, 2009 8:33 AM

  35. tv says: Aug 20, 2009 8:34 AM

Seem to me Dungy is racist. The only people who seem to benefit from his “great wisdom” are black. How about hooking up with some white boys Tony?? Get Matt Jones a job why don’t ya!

  36. massbias300 says: Aug 20, 2009 8:44 AM

Lets see if I understand this correctly,a black former coach was asked to help a black former player and also just spoke up to say one of his former players could still play and help a team.Holy crap stop the world he must be racist.Do any of you think he would not help any of his former players out black or white you are more helpless than I thought. You have already convicted Marvin(black man)but no one seems to feel the same about Ben(white man)now that sounds racist to me.I would bet if it was your wife or daughter you people would want Ben on a stick. Please people think before you type.

You are 1000% percent WRONG. Speaking only for myself, I’ve been suspicious of St. Dungy long before he teamed up with Ron the Dog Drowner, before he “called out” Belichick, and before the Colts took down the Pats in the ’06 AFCCG.
Truth is, Belichick has OWNED Dungy in their head to head meetings. I would rather have Belichick coaching my team than an underchieving, hypocritical, felon-enabling such as Dungy.

On that note who else has dungy helped? He hasn’t even really helped anyone.
Do you think andy reid hasn’t helped to get 3 of his former assistant coaches head coaching jobs? All of which were white. Of course he’s helped, but is anyone calling him racist or prejudice, no, because he isn’t just like dungy morons.
See now these clowns have nothing to say

If Marv was could still play the game, maybe the Peyton would have thrown to him last year.
If he still wants to be in the game ,, keep coaching and quit being a social worker.

while it’s tough to argue aginst the fact that Dungy has down some good in his life, it’s also tough to argue that he couldnt the team over the hump in TB, it took gruden to seal it. And he argueably under achieved with the colts.
But, I personally can not take someone that claims to be a christian seriously that is involved with organizations that preech hate like family first, or someone who is too short sighted to grasp the concept of a seperation of church and state when he campaigned to define marriage in indiana.

Well, bully for you, Pats lover. I find it hard to believe that what Tony said about your cheating hero doesn’t weigh in at all in how you feel about him but, whatever. That still goes for a lot of your brethren.
As for Belicheat owning Dungy, sure he did, for many years. But, since 2006 the Colts have only lost twice to the Pats, both in the regular season, and during that time have beaten them in historic fashion in the playoffs on their way to a historic Super Bowl win. I’d say that level’s the playing field somewhat.
