Marshall still unhappy, in practice purgatory

Brandon Marshall’s unhappiness with the Broncos is a story that never goes away; some days are just quieter than others.

Wednesday was not one of those quiet days.

Marshall “disengaged” from practice Wednesday, standing on the sidelines with the defense because he’s “not close” to learning the playbook.

After failing to take any snaps during the 11-on-11 portion of practice, Marshall talked about the latest issue in his relationship with the team. Marshall is upset with how a public relations staffer handled the aftermath of his acquittal last week from misdemeanor battery charges.

“I think the biggest thing was, it was really disappointing hearing
that some of my teammates on one of the best days of . . . for the past
three years, of my life, some of my teammates were coached to say
‘Don’t say you’re happy for Brandon,’” Marshall said.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels tried to explain his side, however vaguely:

“Some things you can’t control, and that
situation, we feel like we tried to handle that the best we could after
that came up,” McDaniels said. “Just trying to get
everyone’s mind back on football and practice and doing what we need to
do to get ready for Seattle.”

Marshall denies asking for more money in a meeting with the front office Monday, but wouldn’t speak about a possible trade request.  He was asked if there were irreconcilable differences between him and the club.

“Unfortunately, sometimes it gets to that point,” Marshall said. “There
are trust issues on both sides. It’s understandable. We’ve got to try
our best to move forward.”

Marshall seems torn halfway between becoming a huge problem for the team and realizing it may not get him anywhere.

“I’m a Bronco and all I can do now is do my best to get in my best football shape and be that player I was the past three years,” he said.

For now, Marshall is practicing primarily with the scout team and his participation in training camp is in some strange purgatory between fully practicing and skipping work.  It’s unclear what role he will have in the team’s second preseason game.

Marshall says he’s healthy, but is behind mentally.  (Insert editor’s note here.)  There are legitimate questions whether he’ll be ready to start in Week One or if the Broncos will let him.

The only safe bet: we’ll have plenty of updates on the situation in the meantime.

Maybe the Broncos should have signed Vick. He could have taken Marshall out behind the shed and put him out of his misery.
You signed the contract. Honor it, Bitch.

Spoiled, overpaid, egotistical. You have a contract. The team will sit you if you continue to act like this. You won’t be traded. All you are doing is bringing the rest of your team down. Get over yourself and be happy that you are paid enormoust amounts of money to play a game.

Hey Denver, trade him to Philly for Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown. I feel bad for Dawk, that Bronco team gets worse everyday!

hey Big Stretch…what the hell is that? you are basing the wins/losses on Brandon “idiot” Marshall?
Josh Mc will not let this distrupt the team to the point where anyone is blaming the outcome on him. I say get rid of this moron. I can’t stand it when players think they are God’s give to an organization…be a professional! As much as I loved having Jay at the helm…his aparent off season attitude was too much…and I think we will be better off for letting him leave. Yes, even if that means Kyle/Chris or Tom.
who the hell do you like?

  8. Darth Ringo says: Aug 19, 2009 3:53 PM

Marshall won’t get on the field if he doesn’t study the playbook. What the hell is he thinking? Right now the team couldn’t put him out there even if they wanted to. Stoopid moove.

He sounds like a perfect fit for the Vikings. Hell, they’ve already bet their future on this season; why not up the ante a little more? If you hear Col. Klink and Kikmi say that they’re not interested and the door is closed, you’ll know it’s about to happen…

  15. CapsLockKey says: Aug 19, 2009 4:22 PM

Go Brandon! As much as my Chiefs have sucked the past two years, watching the Broncos self-implode this off-season has made up for some of it.

  16. Jon Snow says: Aug 19, 2009 4:33 PM

I’ve never seen a bigger mental midget in my life. The guy has no clue what he’s doing. People complained about McD demoting him to 2nd string and then again for making him the gunner on scout team kick off, but if you’re “not even close” to knowing the playbook then nothing more should be expected. That’s right – he admits it – Denver’s alleged #1 WR, a pro-bowler and 100+ catch per year player DOESN’T KNOW THE PLAYBOOK!!!! Is this his latest ploy to try to get traded? Ridiculous. Yes, he’s a man-beast below the neck, but a slobbering, toothless infant everywhere else. In case anyone hasn’t noticed Denver’s days of coddling babies is over.

My opinion on how this ends – Jets trade for Marshall before the season starts. Tannenbaum has nothing to lose because this may be his last season therefore it does not matter how bad he criples future draft picks.

Bengals need a guy like this.

  22. The Breeze says: Aug 19, 2009 5:33 PM

I don’t see this ending well for either the Broncos or Brandon Marshall. Throughout all of this, Marshall’s behavior has been anything but mature and professional. He seems to be unaware that this same behavior isn’t going unnoticed by other NFL teams.
Marshall’s likely to be a problem wherever he goes because the ugly truth is that while his physical ability allows him to be a good football player, he’s both immature and not particularly bright off the field.
His agent, Kennard McGuire, is a bright guy. I’m surprised he hasn’t effectively counselled Marshall to handle himself in a more mature fashion over the past three months.
At this point, Marshall has gambled and lost that in the aftermath of the unpalatable Jay Cutler trade, the Broncos would casually discard his 100 catch per season ability. His best bet is to work his butt off to learn the playbook and regain his spot as the #1 receiver so that he’ll have some leverage to make the big bucks next season.
Unfortunately, his lack of maturity results in an inability to deal well with professional and personal adversity. Out of sheer frustration, he’s more likely than ever to do something stupid (like sit out) or illegal (DUI or assault) in the next couple of months.

  23. CUJO says: Aug 19, 2009 5:43 PM

Love the way the Broncos and MickyD are handling this.
This guy will play and play well when the season starts to keep his value up. The Broncos know that and they’ll teach him a lesson in the meantime. Bench him and maybe suspend him for a couple of games– the guy obviously hates to lose money…so he’ll play.
I think he’s a great player and a big, strong kid but the Broncos won’t trade him like they did with Cutler. Unless a number one next year comes calling but I feel that offer hasn’t come yet. Everyone knows this guy is trouble…teams are probably offering a #2 at the most to take this guy off their hands.
He’ll play. He’ll play on Saturday night. Probably score a TD….only if it’s a reverse running play of course!

Please ship him to Baltimore.. We are waiting for a legitimate #1 reciever. I hope Denver and Baltimore can get something worked out… He doesn’t want to be in Denver anymore, so they should let him go..

  26. HarrisonHits says: Aug 19, 2009 6:16 PM

Doesn’t know the playbook…… hmmm no big surprise there. He would have to have enough brainpower to actually be able to read to learn it.
One of the most complicated offenses in the NFL and the guy apparently has not been studying the playbook from a team he’s asking a huge pay raise from.

i cant believe all you people acting like he is the biggest thug in the NFL. yea, he is an idiot. he thinks about himself first. he gets in trouble with the law. This is 100% completely normal for NFL players, especially receivers. you see this every year with multiple players. Something i have never seen though is how bad the Bronco’s management is just tearing their team apart in a matter of months. The team has continously been lying and mistreating their players, right to their faces. Say what you want about Cutler, Marshall and whoever else, the real morons here are McDaniels and the Broncos front office. THEY ARE HORRIBLE!

  28. Hillbilly Coach says: Aug 19, 2009 6:22 PM

    Josh McDaniels is an idiot!

  29. strongarm7 says: Aug 19, 2009 6:25 PM

This is the first off season/pre season in 24 years of being and loving to be a Bronco fan, that I have been sick to my stomach over this circus. Marshall is being a spoiled #1 wideout. Jay cried like a girl.
BUT… that pales in comparison to the two kids running this team into the ground. Not to mention the senile old guy who allowed this “romper room.”
This offense was arguably the best up and coming force in the NFL (shy 1 RB). The name of the game is to win, and yes you have to nurse a few players egos along the way. Denver didn’t make the play offs due to the “D”… PLAIN AND SIMPLE!! The numbers on the “O” vs. the “D” don’t lie. McDanials has proven nothing as a coach. Even Kubiak waited longer, for good reason, to become a head coach.
I could take all these changes and blunders if it were Cowher or someone of that caliber because that is what the Broncos deserve…who wait, Bill Cowher wouldn’t make those STUPID mistakes like losing a FRANCHISE QB.
    Thanks Pat!!

    franchise qb… 17-20… nope.

  31. as big as a hat says: Aug 19, 2009 9:07 PM

I’m no Cutler fan, but 17-20 is an ignorant argument. As for Marshall, it seems as though Denver will have to either trade this guy or bury him on the bench.

  32. VegasBronco says: Aug 19, 2009 9:34 PM

I love it when people say “I am not a Cutler fan BUT”. That right there is ignorant.
Both Cutler and Marshall looked at the playbook when Coach McDaniels first came in. IMO, they KNEW they could not learn it, so out comes the “lets play dumb”.
I know Cutler has issues, just ask Chicago teammates.
And we know that Marshall does not know the routes. Practice notes make comment of this. Due to Eddie, Marshall may not make it back to #1 and he will blame the coaches.
Right now I would take a starting 3-4 DL and a 3rd for Marshall. ANYONE, please
McDaniels and Xanders has the best players by contract because of ‘futures’. Many contracts have money spread into the uncapped 2010 and 2011. This is genius at work. Wait for the 2010 UFA contracts, like Kuper, Scheffler, Hamilton, and Smith. All will be done within the year and you may not even hear a sound. WOW.

You don’t exactly get a kinda warm & fuzzy feeling if you’re a Broncos employee these days.
Broncos management, not just McDaniels but Bowlen, Ellis and Xanders, have made mistake after mistake in the last six months.
If you actually think that some junior PR staffer orchestrated the “don’t be happy for Brandon because he was acquitted” scenario on his/her own, you’re a delusional Broncos fan.
Then there was that nastly word “trust” rearing it’s ugly head again in reference to Broncos managemnt just as it did in the Cutler saga.
It’s taken this management team less than six months to destroy a once proud franchise.
The saddest part is that the Broncos have a rabidly loyal fan base, and it’s going to take them a year and, a 3-13, 4-12 or a 5-11 season record, to come to their senses and understand how management, not Cutler & Marshall wrecked this team.
While McDaniels is just now begining to get ctiticized for the teams performance in pre season it’s going to get worse for him during the season, and he only deserves part of the blame.

Yes, franchise QB, and 17-20 is not a stat you can with out some other very key stats.
    2008 #2 offense
    2008 #30 deffense
    not mention the most important of all is the “D” ranking for point allowed;
    2007 ranked 28th
2008 ranked 30th in the nfl.
You need a “D” to get the “W”
