Niners pick Raiders apart

Apparently, the 49ers defense is really good.

Or the Raiders offense is pretty bad.

Or maybe a little of both.

According to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, the San Fran defense picked off Oakland quarterbacks five times during a joint practice on Wednesday.

One happened during the 7-on-7 period.  The other four happened during an 11-on-11 red zone drill.

Starter JaMarcus Russell threw three of them; Bruce Gradkowski was responsible for the other two.

For the Niners, Nate Clement made three of the picks.  Dre' Bly and rookie linebacker Diryal Briggs each had one.

Raiders coach Tom Cable likely was frustrated enough to punch someone.

Or throw someone out of a chair.

Or maybe a little of both.

Not surprising from those 2 QBs!

man it was a promising season too... here's hoping Javon can step in and replace Shilens.

Id hate to think shilens and javon could both be good players and both starting by week 4.

    Florio you're a real riot....

  10. DcNinerFan says: August 19, 2009 4:34 PM

Probably a combination of both. It might take a little while for Singletary's D philosophy (then again, maybe it already has) to take hold, but just you wait. I have faith in the man... Now if I only had faith our O could mirror the intensity of our D... Oh yeah, Raiders suck. Just obligatory, mind. :-)

The sky is falling Raider fans...

  14. Humboldt420 says: August 19, 2009 4:46 PM

Apparently, the 49ers offense is just as bad. Read on Contra Costa Times in the blog section, the Raiders' defense had their way with the 49ers' offense.

    Sad state in the Bay.

  15. broncoman says: August 19, 2009 4:50 PM

this just in...Packers had a scrimmage against the local HS team...Aaron was picked off twice, once by his kid brother.

@Ray Guy...I laughed out loud on that one man...that was funny.

  16. STLRDR says: August 19, 2009 4:51 PM

Who cares. Last year JR had 13 TD's and 8 picks -- not like he's an INT machine all of sudden. If he starts doing it starting Week 1, call me. Otherwise give me some real news.

A player that won't be signed before the season starts & will probably not be on their team before the 1st contract is up.

  19. Silver&Black666 says: August 19, 2009 5:03 PM

You stupid moron I have never meet a more feeble minded and sheepish attorney in my life.

Its called practice and Cable is trying to expand the passing game. What better place to try it than in a PRACTICE scrimmage you dolt.

What did Al Davis do to you to make you write at a 4th grade level? Did he touch your no no spot?

  20. mustbechris says: August 19, 2009 5:07 PM

at least Jeff Garcia doesn't suck.

  21. wmt says: August 19, 2009 5:10 PM

Even if the results were the EXACT OPPOSITE, the content of this article would be exactly the same. Florio is a Raider-Hater just like the rest of you. That's ok. It's embarrassing if you ask me, but alright. Get a life.

  22. Junior says: August 19, 2009 5:14 PM

Ha ha ha ha... Oh wait, it's practice, nevermind who cares?

Bustafluff, sorry man Orton's 3 picks came in a game, not practice.

Quagmire, what the F are you talking about? The Raiders had all their draft picks signed for training camp (DHB missed one practice). With the exception of Russell, they always get their picks in camp. Feel free to talk smack when you know what you're talking about, until then move along son.

If your name is not Florio you might also understand that they were primarily throwing the ball working on their passing game. You know, trying to get better at something they were weak at last year. It's how you get better. Wait, what's that? You don't understand football, you just saw a headline with the Raiders and decided to try and pile on? I understand.

    RAIDER NATION... All day.

    Shut it.

“I’m trying to get the quarterback to cut it loose in the red zone, but four picks, probably pushed it a little too much, but it’s OK for now, get a chance to teach from that and help them get better,” Raiders coach Tom Cable.

I don't think anyone should get too excited about this. Like someone else said, it's practice, nothing to get worked up about.

I think the real story here is that the Niners and Raiders have met for two straight years now to have a 'friendly' practice in an effort to break the doldrums of training camp. The players love it, and the coaches get to see their players in a more competitive way, more teams will be doing this soon enough.

One more thing, the Raiders' strength is in their running game, I won't be surprised if the Raiders run all over the Niners Sunday.

  28. jeremiah says: August 19, 2009 5:45 PM

    Dear San Francisco 49ers defense,

please destroy brett favre when you play him. you limited the overrated AP to like 13 yards last time you played him....so it shouldn't be a problem.

  29. Raiders757 says: August 19, 2009 5:46 PM

Go figure, a Raider hater picks on one team, but fails to mention how much the other team's offense didn't do much of anything either. There's noting like one sided biased reporting to brighten your day.

This wasn't even news worthy for God's sake!

  30. Raider Pride says: August 19, 2009 6:03 PM

None of those would have been picks in an actual game. It was practice.... and the throws were low. In a real game they would have been receptions.

No one is going to bend over with two guys from San Francisco surrounding you, unless you really have to.

  31. bwisnasky says: August 19, 2009 6:03 PM

It's funny how on Tuesday the Raiders picked SF apart and nobody reported it....

  32. TylerDurden says: August 19, 2009 6:12 PM

And yesterday the Raiders offense owned the Niner defense ....but that wouldn't follow along with your agenda would it? Oh that's right, Favre signed with the Vikings yesterday....no time for petty stories like the Raiders actually doing well.

  33. sportfreak1996 says: August 19, 2009 6:23 PM

"So do they start out with an 0-1 record????"

Well, they play the Chargers week 1, so yes, they are 0-1 already.

  34. 909RaiderLifer says: August 19, 2009 6:23 PM

Any reports of how Crabdiva has been doing in these joint practices?

  35. empty13 says: August 19, 2009 6:26 PM

throw someone out of a chair? easier to just punch them.

sounds like jamarbust bustell needs more practice.

  36. BlackJack says: August 19, 2009 6:34 PM

Oh my god some of you people (Florio included) need to put things in perspective. This was PRACTICE. Jeez

What's the matter Florio...slow news day on the Favre/Vick front? No news about Romo's latest fling?

  37. nato2424 says: August 19, 2009 6:41 PM

javon has potential to be the number one guy here. He was unstoppable with Cutler at the helm before he got hurt. Raiders be stupid not to start Garcia.

  38. RaiderRich says: August 19, 2009 7:18 PM

all Russell/Gradkowski/Frye/Garcia need to worry about is handing the ball off to one of your FOUR stud Running Backs (McFadden/Bush/Fargas/Rankin)

    Hey Junior,

"Worst record in football the last 5, or 6 years...horrible, QB, coach, owner & fans...what's not to love?"

Actually it's the last 6 years, I misspoke.

Add up the wins for EVERY team in the league for the last 6 years...Oakland is last...DEAD LAST...with 24 wins & 72 losses!!
I think the black hole should be renamed "The Brown Hole".

Kudos to you, sir. Being a dick is easy. Being objective in the face of team bias is a balls move. I apologize for one or two of the bad things I've said about you or your mother.

Mullester-DHB was actually just dropping his balls into your mouth. Thanks for being there.

  44. AutumnWind999 says: August 19, 2009 8:49 PM

    Hah.
    Let's review:

-- In May, Florio goes crazy with reports that JaMarcus apparently didn't throw the ball well in a minicamp practice.

-- When JaMarcus performs well in later OTAs? Crickets.

-- When JaMarcus and the Raiders blow out the Cowboys, 31-10, in mid-August and the offense rolls up about 450 yards of offense? Crickets — no wait — I'm sorry, he posts a headline something along the lines of "JaMarcus and Darius Heyward-Bey fail to establish a connection"!! Hah. As if that was the story of the game.

-- Then, one week later, Florio blows out a report that the Raiders' offense struggles in ONE of several training camp practices they're having with the 49ers! Hilarious.

Florio, did Al Davis piss in your soup or something? You hate the Raiders more than Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Shanahan's secret love child.

  45. Merc says: August 19, 2009 10:59 PM

"In all there were five interceptions by the 49ers, four in the last red zone session alone _ two by Nate Clements, one by Dre Bly and another by linebacker Diryal Briggs. Clements had another pick off a Takeo Spikes deflection intended for Justin Fargas in a seven-on-seven drill."
Passing to Justin Fargas??? Now you KNOW it must have been practice.

    I have a question.
    According to "The Spread":

    http://www.thespread.com/sports-betting-top-stories-900/2010-super-bowl-xliv-odds-to-win-patriots-favored-by-oddsmakers-a.html

You can plainly see that the Raiders are 75/1 to win SB XLIV. The 9ers are 60/1. My question is this, when the US dollar fails, what are the odds that the NFL will cancel the season? Will the players still play if their game cheques are in $US "Monopoly" money?

  46. NinerNation says: August 20, 2009 3:56 AM

Understandable that the Raiders QBs would be distracted. Singletary was probably staring at them like the money you could save with Geico.

what a crock of shi*........are you actually making posts about scrimages now....wtf does a scrimage mean, let alone a pre season game....
