Rex Ryan keeps on talking

We like Rex Ryan.  He’s a good coach.  More importantly, he’s bringing that semi-contrived reality show drama to the NFL by constantly stirring the pot with the stuff he says.

On Tuesday, Ryan explained his past comment regarding his intention not to “kiss Bill Belichick’s rings.”

Ryan explained that he meant Belichick no disrespect, and then Ryan arguably proceeded to disrespect him.

“When I said that about Belichick, I’m just
letting him know I’m not intimidated by him,” Ryan said, per the Associated Press.  “He’s got the
same position I have.  We’re both head coaches in this league.  He just
happens to have a hell of a lot more Super Bowl wins.  I don’t have a win.  I understand that, but we’re not going to tiptoe our way through this thing.”

Ryan also addressed more generally his willingness to speak his mind.

“We’re
going to be ourselves and I’m going to be myself,” he said.  “How much
more motivation are they going to get by putting a quote from me on the
wall, saying I believe in my football team and I’m not going to be
intimidated by a coach or anyone else?

“If that’s where you’re going to draw motivation from, hell, we’ll probably kick your ass.”

Actually, we think Ryan has a point.  The Giants said that they were going to beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.  The declaration was shocking, given that the Pats were 18-0 entering the game and that the Giants struggled before getting hot late in the 2007 season.

But the big talk didn’t keep them from delivering.

Then again, the problem with talking big is that, if the team fails to make good, the folks who were talking big end up looking foolish.  Indeed, if everyone talked big every week, half the league would consistently come off as a collection of buffoons.

Still, the point we continue to take away from these blurbs about Rex Ryan is that the apple is resting against the base of the tree, and that’s one of the reasons why the sons of Buddy Ryan haven’t ascended more quickly to NFL head-coaching positions.

For Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, his own ability to claim one of the 32 most coveted positions in sports now hinges on one thing — whether Rex can turn his words into wins.

He is a good Asst. Coach, as a Head Coach he is a bumbling fool

Whenever someone says “I mean no disrespect” get ready for some disrespect. Speaking of which, I’m trying to recall how the 2007 Giants struggled before getting hot. 10-6 for the regular season, went toe-to-toe with the Patsies in the last game of the year (didn’t back down with “nothing” to play for – I went to this great game), won 10 road games including playoffs. I guess you could say they struggled at 0-2 to start the season. Other than that, they played with grit. Plaxico made the prediction during Super Bowl week about the final score that Brady dismissed as ludicrous. I think Plex even gave the Pats more points than they actually scored.

Maybe he can take his gift of gab to a booth next year. He sure as hell won’t be coaching the Jets.

Half? Really?!? Half? How is that even possible? I will have to reassess my efforts, going forward, and double down on my winners!

I wouldn’t call him a fool. He’s confident and I dont see why everyone calls that a fool or disrespectful (which I also don’t see how he’s being disrespectful to Bill in his comments here). You have to be confident in this game. Some are confident and quite others are not. Live with it thats what happens when you have so many different ppl w/ different personalities in the sport, and thats what makes it fun. Thats whey i dont don’t get why everyone hates Chad Ocho for being so confident and expressing his confidence. Florio, these guys have something you don’t its called ‘swag’ look it up (and not the wikipedia version the urban dictionary version).

Do you work for ESPN given how you just sensationalized Brady’s reaction? He didn’t “dismiss it as ludicrous”. Watch the tape again, Damor.

Rex Ryan shouldnt kiss Belicheats rings.
NOBODY should. The rings were obtained by CHEATING.
The only people that kiss Belicheats rings are the bandwagon “fans” that only hopped on board 10 years or so ago, after so many pathetic years prior.
Then there are the few Turds like Maineman, Hayward Givesblowjobs, and the other handful irrelevent douchbags that dont kiss Belicheats rings…………….they kiss his fudge covered pole daily.

  9. whywerule says: Aug 19, 2009 8:32 AM

I am an unabashed Belichick fan but I don’t see where Ryan disrespected Belichick. So what if he said that he does not intend to “kiss Belichick’s rings”. Belichick would not even let Ryan kiss his rings or his @ss if Ryan got down on his knees and begged. And of course he is not going to be “intimidated by Belichick”. I don’t believe any Head Coach has ever been intimidated by Belichick. Many, but not all, have been outcoached by Belichick, and have had their teams outplayed by Belichick, but I doubt any were intimidated.

  10. Kevin from Philly says: Aug 19, 2009 8:36 AM

He hasn’t coached a game yet, but you’d think he was one loss away from being fired from Florio’s comments. Give the man a chance.

i look forward to when the patriots are up 42-7 in the 4th and they are throwing deep to run up the score. belichick wont react to this with words, and neither will the players. t-rex thinks he can pull some opposite physcology on the pats and get them off their game. the reason the giants won is simple- they had a pass rush. that is all it comes down to. keep talking t-rex, i cant wait to see the pats run it up on your stupid ass.

  12. Jose Reyes says: Aug 19, 2009 8:53 AM

The Super Bowl reference is irrelevant. You don’t need bulletin board material for the Super Bowl, there’s plenty of natural adrenaline. Now a mid-season game against the Jets….well, that’s a different story. See Anthony Smith, DB Pittsburg Steelers, December, 2007.

As typical with a Pats fan a gross overstating of facts or should i say “cheating” of facts.
Sold out the last 16 years? You mean 7 years or were you talking about the fact from 1959 to 2000 you barely had 16 fans in the metal bleachers your broke owner(s) called stands?

Yet you have repeatedly come on PFT and predicted the Patriots will advance at least to the AFC Championship game.
So, by your own admission then, the so-called “cheating” didn’t make any difference- correct?

  23. MaineMan says: Aug 19, 2009 10:03 AM

Umm, gameday? EVERY team videotapes opponents, including their signals. This is NOT illegal. What IS illegal is videotaping from the sidelines or the endzone or any other location from which those videotapes could be used in the game currently being played (and even THAT was once legal).
The Pats were specifically busted for videotaping from those locations, not for videotaping in general. Also, they were NOT busted for actually using those tapes during games (which would be difficult to prove or disprove).
Of course, such explanations are useless against the conclusions of seriously underdeveloped minds like yours.

Obviously, it’s YOU that not only knows nothing about football, but could not possibly have ever played it at a higher level & if by remote chance you did, you know you’re not being honest…breaks down like so FOOL:
By never having competed, it’s easy to sit back & say that ONE team’s having the opponents signals broken down , thus making it far easier to call the perfect play in order to attack what you already KNOW the opponent will do, didn’t have anything to do with their success…you’re fooling yourself if you don’t think that even an extra half-step advantage, has everything to do with whether a play is successful or not, at this level of competition, where these athletes are the best of the best…ever hear the phrase “a game of inches”? No, then how about this one; how many times have we had to hear how great BeliCHEAT is at making halftime adjustments…hmmmm???

I love this it’s-almost-regular-season, hyped-up, read-into-every-comment stuff that happens every year. Ryan is just trying to rally the troops, that’s his style. Belichick’s style is to motivate his players by posting foolish rantings such as these on the locker-room walls. In the end, both sides have to try to play better football than the other guys. If you play better football, you win. If you suck, you lose…..and oh yeah, gameday is a bozo.

The Patriots’ streak of consecutive sellouts is currently 159 games and began in 1994, the year that Robert Kraft purchased the franchise. The streak includes all preseason, regular season and postseason games since Sept. 4, 1994. If the Patriots sell out every game again this season, the streak will extend to 169 consecutive games by the end of the regular season.

You are an interesting case. You refuse to stfu about Shittsburgh having 6 titles. But your rhetoric reveals an inferiority complex when it comes to New England, despite your team having a more storied history. So, what is it?
Is it the cultural superiority of New England?
Is it vastly superior intellectual superiority of New Englanders?
Is it the geographical advantages of New England, proximity to the coastline and vastly superior air quality?
The fact that you clowns already had your bags packed for New Orleans in 2001 when Drew Bledsoe came off the bench to humiliate you on your home field?
The fact that the Pats went back in 3 years later and humiliated you again?

Rex Ryan shouldnt kiss Belicheats rings, obviously the man does not scare that easily.
He has a vision and purpose and just wants everyone to understand this.
He believes in his player’s and they respect what his goal is.
