Only two teams lost more games from their starters to injury in 2008 than the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately for new head coach Jim Mora, this year is starting out like the last.
Mora announced Wednesday that left tackle Walter Jones will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery after missing nearly all of training camp because of the injury.
The team will also be without cornerback Marcus Trufant indefinitely because of a “disc issue” in his back. He hasn’t practiced in camp.
No other details are available from the Seattle Times’ Danny O’Neil, who posted the news on Twitter. (O’Neil does have pictures of Mora delivering the news. Fancy.)
Both injuries are deeply worrisome for the Seahawks. Jones is coming off microfracture surgery, and the 35-year-old future Hall of Famer couldn’t last a few days at camp without getting hurt again.
He said in July that he will consider retirement after the season, and this setback can’t be easy on him. (Or Matt Hasselbeck’s confidence.) Jones is also struggling with back issues.
Trufant, 28, is a bigger mystery. The team’s best cornerback finished last season healthy and his back problems weren’t known by the media until camp started. He’s on the active/PUP list, so he’s eligible to sit out the fist six weeks of the season without taking up a roster spot.
It’s too early to think about that option, and there is no reason to panic in mid-August. But Wednesday’s developments have a familiar feeling for Seahawks fans.
Get ready to plug in Mad Max Unger!
They should have used that 4th pick on the O line, they had to know Walt wasn’t going to make it back. It is a good thing they got Unger, but he ain’t no left tackle…Oh, and cornerback? I guess they’ll have to play the two dwarfs that Ruskell drafted, that should go well.
Sad, but I think he’s done. One of the great Seahawks of all time. I’ll we can hope for is that Sean Locklear can hold up all year.
I totally agree with you on the dwarfs!
Makes you wonder what Ruskell was thinking?
At least Mora didn’t get de ja vu horrible news. Since the hawks didn’t sign Vick. Mora can sleep at night knowing he has a competent quarterback.
And they want to go to an 18 game schedule!
No way the human bodies can handle it!
Vick’s failed drug test says:

You know Vick’s a backup, right hater? Seneca Wallace Matt Hasslebeck.
Too bad for the Hawks. Looking at the situation now of course they should have drafted Monroe.
But at the time they figure Jones would be good to go and how can you pass up Curry at that spot.
Hopefully Locklear can do an alright job until the big guy returns.
