Several readers have recently asked whether Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth might be looking at potentially joining the UFL for the 2009 season, given that he won’t be playing in the NFL.
Per a league source, Stallworth does not intend to join the upstart league.
Even if he were inclined to try, Stallworth remains under contract with the Browns during his one-year suspension from the NFL, and the standard player contract contains clear prohibitions against playing football in other leagues.
The Titans successfully enforced such rights against Pacman Jones in 2007, when Jones was hoping to become a pro wrestler.
That said, the Browns could choose to allow Stallworth to play, either to give him a way to stay in football shape or to provide him with a showcase in advance of a 2010 trade. In 2006, the Dolphins allowed running back Ricky Williams to play in the CFL while he was on suspension from the NFL.
Does Tony Dungheap have any UFL connections for Donte?
Let him play in the UFL ManKok!!! There is never a bad time to polish a turd.
CFL
but…but…he didn’t even kill any dogs…just doesn’t seem fair…
Remember Ricky Williams got injured (broken bone) that season in the CFL, then had a door tear into him and have stitches. If the Browns intend to keep him for some sorta bait, Watch out for the doors in the CFL…..
CFL prohibits players serving a suspension in another league from playing.
BigBear – the UFL does not, however, which is what this article is referring to.
it would make a LOT of sense for the Browns to let him play in the UFL. Of course, since they are the Browns, they won’t let him play there, thus further killing any trade value they’d get from him. He would absolutely dominate in the UFL, which would make him appear to be better than he really is… which is what the Browns need for the trade value.
Quadricep, groin, knee, hamstring, shoulder, hip, rib, ankle, hamstring, quadricep, thigh, strained quad, hamstring.
That is the list of injuries that has plagued Stallworth
and kept him out of many games throughout his career.
Playing anywhere will probably hurt his trade value.
Mark him up as just another error in judgment from the
Browns organization.
