Ochocinco takes on a new role

During Thursday night’s preseason game between the Patriots and the Bengals, receiver Chad Ochocinco added a new skill to his repertoire.

He kicked an extra point.

Child.  Please.

And, according to Tom Curran, who’s at the game, Ochocinco kicked off to start the second half of the game.  (Per NFL.com’s play-by-play, the kick traveled 61 yards.)

In quotes distributed by the team at halftime (and posted by Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe), the player formerly known as Chad Johnson had this to say:  “Esteban Ochocinco is back. The most interesting footballer in the
world.  Everyone has to remember, I’ve always said that soccer is my No.
1 sport.  I think Ronaldinho would be proud of me right now.”

Ochocinco has played soccer in the past, and since the preseason games don’t count we like the fact that Bengals coach Marvin Lewis let him do it.

And Lewis realizes that handling Ochocinco involves indulging stuff like this.

Hey, he could be doing a lot worse than asking to kick.

Will he kick more?  You can follow the action right here, at NBCSports.com.

Hey jackass, er Florio, If you would have done just a touch more (any) investigation (you do like to pretend you are a journalist after all) you would have found that the Bengal’s Place Kicker, Shayne Graham, is injured.

Ha! Who is this Chad Ochocinco character?

  3. Rex Grossman says: Aug 20, 2009 9:28 PM

This is cool. He would be one of my favorite players if he wasn’t such a d-bag.

  4. packattack04 says: Aug 20, 2009 9:34 PM

He actually nailed the extra point. And the kickoff wasn’t bad either.

if you ask tony dungy what he thinks about this retard, he’ll tell you he’s normal.
    nice dungy.

I thought this post was going to be about him not drinking on the most recent episode of Hard Knocks and even making sure when he encountered that one drunk guy that he was going to be taking a cab home.
I don’t know if that was just because the cameras were rolling, but either way, he seemed pretty genuine.

After seeing Chad’s leg, I’d rather have him handling kick-off duties instead of Shaynk (no I didn’t misspell that) Graham.

  8. Paul_R. says: Aug 20, 2009 9:42 PM

WhoDeyBuck, don’t the Bengals have a second-string place kicker just in case Graham isn’t in a preseason game or do the Bengals just not plan well?

  9. EdReed4prez says: Aug 20, 2009 9:50 PM

Yawn. Sir your god called, he wants the talent he gave you back.

  10. WhoDeyBuck says: Aug 20, 2009 9:54 PM

    @Paul_R
You assume the dysfunctional organization known as the Bengals are capable of forethought.
Before entering training camp, the Bengals only had one Kicker and one Punter on the roster. (and still do)
Shanyk Graham (+1 who_dey_kid) was the FRANCHISE PLAYER, and it still kills me that we franchised a Kicker.

  11. BlacknBlue says: Aug 20, 2009 9:57 PM

WhoDeyBuck…who cares if the kicker is injured, that’s not a story unless it happened Gramatica style. The story is that anyone other that a kicker/punter nailed an Xpt and a decent kickoff, and a bigger story since the player is a high profile. how does that make florio, rather than you, a jackass?

oh and WhoDey, don’t bring in your jungle douchery, errrr, jim rome talk to the comments in an attempt to sound cool

Just a little preseason fun, why not ?

Hey, that’s cool, good for him and the team. Personally, I’d like to see the No Fun League try more things like this during the regular season. Only a few teams make it to the playoffs & Super Bowl, but all of the teams have to sell tickets all season long. Why not make it more fun for the fans, instead of just a dreary trudge through a bunch of play-it-safe close wins or losses? Things like this and that outstanding fake punt the Titans pulled off recently would be refreshing to see more of.
And with all the thugs in the league these days, a guy like Chad, whose only crime is a big ego and eccentricity, is positively refreshing in comparison. Best of luck to him having fun and being a productive team member this year. Nowhere for this team to go but up.

Now if he can just figure out how those darn banks work! (see Hard Knocks, episode 2).

  16. Paul_R. says: Aug 20, 2009 10:16 PM

Ok, so the Bengals didn’t plan well. My bad. No, their bad. But, I’ll give Chad credit. He did nail the extra point though his kickoff could have been deeper.

  17. stanjam says: Aug 20, 2009 10:29 PM

So the Bengals win the game by one point, courtesy of Ocho’s leg, lol.
Hey, if you have a few players that can kick, you can free up roster space by not having a kicker!

That’s truthfully pretty standard Chad,He may seem like a Diva jackass…But when comes to personal life he’s pretty humble doesn’t drink doesn’t smoke pot lives in small house saving his money (besides his rides he does love his cars)

Sounds like it was a fun, too. Good for him.

The extra point kick was amazingly excellent, right down the middle and with tons of height. You rarely see the starting kickers do so well on their field goals. I’m not one of theses guy’s that love’s Chad’s antics, but that was seriously very impressive. I couldn’t believe my eye’s when he kicked it.
I absolutely believe if he wasn’t a wide receiver, he could likely make it as a kicker if he did it full time. He doesn’t have to worry about that any time soon. He looks like he’s going to have a very good year at wide receiver.
You would have to see it for yourself to actually believe it.

    VIVA LA OCHOCINCO!!!
    =h=

  23. FireJerryJones says: Aug 21, 2009 9:14 AM

Wonder how he’d feel if the kicker was trying out at WR while 85 was a hold out?
I think you’d call that picking at a ‘scab’

  24. Kevin from Philly says: Aug 21, 2009 9:23 AM

Just another reason to think Chad’s a whack job – he likes SOCCER!

  25. stanjam says: Aug 21, 2009 10:32 AM

As much of a joker and egomaniac as he is, I was impressed by his kicking last night. He did it without a ton of reps, like most kickers get. What a valuable option and relief it must be for a coach to know he has a backup plan for his kicker should something happen. Kickers rarely get injured, but having the Ocho option must be nice.

  26. Silver&Black666 says: Aug 21, 2009 10:35 AM

    WHO CARES!!!
Seriously a 14 year old girl can kick an extra point.
This happens every pre-season the little baby that didn’t get enough attention when he was younger is desperate for the cameras to be on him while he tries to act funny and entertain us during the pre-season.
Then when the regular season starts he disappears because he is average at best.
It is only these antics that separate him from the other middle tier receivers in the league.
I myself am sick of the “LOOK AT ME” players in this league.
Football is a team sport and this turd will never get that.

  27. BRYAN_NELMS says: Aug 21, 2009 1:13 PM

Now if he could just catch a few touchdown passes…
