Report: Big Ben's Achilles' tendon not believed to be torn

I said on a radio spot today (I think it was today, maybe it was yesterday) that we can make all the predictions we want about the coming football season but that the only certainty is that there will be injuries and that some of them could go a long way toward determining the outcome of the chase for the Lombardi Trophy.

Last year, for example, the Patriots were thrown rudely off course in Week One, after quarterback Tom Brady was lost for the year with a torn ACL.

The Steelers nearly suffered that same fate today, on their final day of training camp practices in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Jim Wexell of Scout.com, via his Twitter account, reports that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has an injury to his Achilles’ tendon that, for now, appears to not be a tear.

The only prescription for a torn Achilles’ tendon is more cowbell season-ending surgery.

Per Wexell, Roethlisberger is now able to walk (he’s still limping).  Roethlisberger told someone, “I’ll be all right.”

Given Ben’s reputation for being a drama queen, that’s a powerful statement.  And it indicates that, for now, the Steelers have dodged a bullet.

If Big Ben calls the healer, Tony Dunheap, he will magically re-attach his torn achilles tendon. After all, Dungheap was a Steeler D-back.

    You’re gonna want that cowbell.

Does this guy have a pair of balls? Every time someone touches him he cries about it. Cue the “thumbs up” in week 17 when he had a concussion. The guy is a soft, dripping pussy. He plays up injuries so he can play that card if he loses.

Hey VOX Ben has a better record (for his age) in winning than any other QB in history…i always see you being a hater…i’d love to know who your team is and how bad they suck with or without your average QB

Is it even possible to tear Achilles’ from a hit? I thought those injuries just kind of happen.
Of course, I’m not a doctor and don’t even play one on TV, but I did watch “ER” for years.

  14. thediggler says: Aug 20, 2009 5:34 PM

    yeah Vox,
cause we all know it was Ben and the offense that blew a 13 point lead in the super bowl, and it was the defense that scored the winning touchdown with an 88 yard drive with 2.30 left to play. idiot.
check the record books, they don’t lie. 6 vince lombardi trophies, wooooo!!!!!

  16. piderhead says: Aug 20, 2009 5:38 PM

I had an achilles tear and could still walk. I actually had to drive a clutch VW bug to the emergency room.
Just because he’s walking doesn’t mean it is not torn. He’s screwed. It’s after the operation you don’t walk.

  17. rebecca30 says: Aug 20, 2009 5:38 PM

Totally agree Florio, drama queen big time. Seems like every week last season we heard he had something hurt, most players do they just don’t talk about it. Suck it up Rapistberger.

  18. purpleguy says: Aug 20, 2009 5:42 PM

So if it’s not torn is it stretched/sprained or something? isn’t that like the pre-cursor to the thing tearing? One false step during the season and he coud be toast.

“Given Ben’s reputation for being a drama queen, that’s a powerful statement.”
Cite specific examples. Quarterbacks often fall under this category. Roethlisberger is handled a lot like other quarterbacks when it comes to injuries. The only reason he stands out so often is because everyone loves to hate Pittsburgh.
Almost another reason to despise Max Starks.
    @ js136202
When has he blamed a loss on an injury? I see you are still having trouble distinguishing between reality and the world in your head.
The “thumbs up” scenario was a possible neck injury. Steelers fan or not… I wouldn’t consider somebody who played 2 months after swan diving through the windshield of a Chrysler a “soft, dripping pussy.”

  22. empty13 says: Aug 20, 2009 5:44 PM

  29. Darth Ringo says: Aug 20, 2009 5:54 PM

If he plays the next preseason game without a hitch the drama queen label may apply to today, but keep in mind the team is going to take precautions like this anytime a starter goes down. It isn’t necessarily Ben being a crybaby.

  30. Okey says: Aug 20, 2009 5:55 PM

He also has the biggest head in NFL history by far. However, he’s not the only guy with a good winning percentage and he holds a very slim lead in that department.
    Frankenberger winning% .671
    Tony Romo winning% .658
    Including playoffs, by the way.

  39. steeltownpride says: Aug 20, 2009 6:35 PM

Average Qb ? You must mean Tony homo who cant hold a snap of a ball or handle a lead in the 4th quarter .
Dont worry about the Steelers ok ? We know what we are doing . 6 Lombardi’s says so .
Ravens , titans , an cowgirl fans stop hating ok ? I cant help if your teams sucks and can win a big game when it counts . Titans how could you not beat the Ravens at home in the playoffs ? Sad . Ravens you know who your daddy is so need to say more to you . And Dallas fans call me when you can win just 1 post season game or hell even win a game that matters .
Its sad how the cowboys rolled over and took it in the ass the last game ever played in your stadium . Thats PATHETIC

Wow. You Pittsburgh dudes are a bunch of geniuses, aren’t ‘cha?. I believe Vox basically said the Steelers were so good that it doesn’t matter who the QB is. Rather than see that for what it is, you only see the [basically correct] assessment of Big Dumb Ben’s skill. Ben’s an average- to above-average QB (of below-average intelligence) playing on one hell of a good overall team. “He’s got an NFL best 8-2 record!!!” No, sh*tstick, the Steelers have an 8-2 record. Plug Leftwich in, same record. Plug Batch in, same record.

… This is skewed, then. Big Ben has won plenty of playoff games. Tony Romo hasn’t won one. So there’s a larger sample size.
Not to mention championships, the one thing that Cowboys desperately cling to to prove that they are better than the NFC East. But the Steelers have more rings, and they’ve won some of them within the past decade.

  49. m1k3- says: Aug 20, 2009 7:53 PM

    Wow,
I know from reading the site that Vox Veritas is an idiot. But he’s truly stooped to new lows. Now he’s making up his own stats? Where did you get those winning percentages? Out of your own arse?
Among active quarterbacks, Ben Roethlisberger trails only Tom Brady in winning percentage:
    W L Pct.
    Tom Brady 101 27 .789
    Ben Roethlisberger 58 22 .725
    Philip Rivers 36 18 .667
    Tony Romo 27 14 .659
    Peyton Manning 124 67 .649
    (sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3862313&type=story)
I’m not sure if that includes postseason. If not, the gap would only widen thanks to Romo’s collection of 0 wins.
Apetits, you’re just about as dumb. His intention was not to complement the Steelers, only to insult Ben (hence the responses).
Anyone who denies the fact that Ben brings some unique abilities to the field just isn’t a football fan. His ability to make plays helps the Steelers win. End of story. Don’t believe me? Watch the last 2:37 of Super Bowl XLIII.

We have one hell of a team in 94,95,97,01. Great teams all missing one thing . Big Ben . Ben has done what hasnt been done since Bradshaw . Win Superbowls . If Ben is average, so 28 other Qb’s must suck . Ben plays UGLY football . Its never going to be pretty . But its going to win games and championships . He has almost as many as John Elway on 4 th qtr comebacks .
He is going to hold on to the ball to long . He is going to throw int’s . But when the game is on the line ill take Ben over anyone else . Including Brady . In the end Ben will have more than Elway Marino , Brady , both Mannings , Brees etc in championships . Like him or hate him you all wish he was on your team cause he makes “IT” happen . And if you got it , YOU GOT IT .

You MIGHT have a bit of a point that it’s the team & not him as the reason for the NFL record 59 wins in his 1st 5 yrs., where your ignorance shines brightly is when you discount that an NFL best 19 (over 30%) of those were 4th qtr. comeback, engineered by Ben!!!

And yeah, I decided to say that even though I didn’t have all the facts. Why? Because either way, Ben’s winning percentage is better than Homo’s; it’s only a matter of how much. With or without including the playoffs, it’s still a far larger discrepancy than you stated earlier. Do the research yourself. You’ll only end up crying in the end (like Hollywood Henderson). Deal with it.
