The Saints and the Texans will play a preseason game on Saturday. Today, they’re practicing together in Houston.
And they’re doing more than practicing.
A brawl erupted today after Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey and Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans collided following a pass thrown behind Shockey by quarterback Drew Brees.
Here’s the video. Shockey apparently was miffed that Ryans hit him before the ball arrived. Within seconds, they were pushing and shoving and swinging, and Shockey was swarmed by blue jerseys.
The most intriguing aspect of the video, in our view? Shockey’s teammates made only a perfunctory, half-hearted (as opposed to “Hoof Hearted“) effort to help him.
Per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, there were a total of six fights during the session.
“It was very Gangs of New York-esque,” said Texans tackle/PFT Planet member Eric Winston.
It’s a shame Shockey’s first name isn’t “Bill.”
It would be bigger news if NFL teams did NOT get into fights and scuffles when practicing together.
Well I watched this video twice and each time it appeared to be as many gold Saints helmuts in the pile as blue Texans helmuts. Maybe it appeared like more Texans players because the Saints side of the field was away from the camera.
Regardless, it would a story revolving around Shockey’s fellow teamates won’t come to his defense during a fight is a non-story.
Rumble? Brawl? Half-hearted effort? If you haven’t watched the video yet, don’t expect any of these things.
I don’t think this had anything to do with the play. I believe that they were having a “friendly discussion” over who had the best tattoos.
Also – at least Shockey didn’t pass out after this.
Quick, somebody call the commissioner, these guys need to be suspended for fighting…

Geeze the guy barely touched Shockey during the play, nothing for him to be upset about. But once Shockey gave him a little nudge Ryans certainly appeared to get the better of it.
And it was a halfhearted effort by the other Saints players. A bunch of the Texans piled on and finally some Saints came to the rescue. Sort of, a little bit.

You’re dumb. Ryans gave the first shove and there were plenty of Saints involved in the fight. I don’t like Shockey much either, but you embellish your stories sometimes against players you obviously do not like. Maybe now that you are actually part of the media, you should try to be impartial.
Shockey is an A-hole. Brees threw the ball behind him on purpose.
I watched that vid 3 times and it still makes me smile.
Shockey is one of the biggest dickheads in the league in my opinion, and seeing him get thrown around like a ragdoll and dogpiled was just fantastic.

Regardless of how uneventful it looked, Shockey got B*TCHED by those guys…and with them wearing shorts as opposed to pads, I gotta imagine there was some below the belt shots taken in that scrum.
They should be suspended for EVER!!! Oh wait…..that’s only if they’re Raiders.

Cleary which ever player shoved Shockey should be getting counseling in anger management. And perhaps a 1-2 game suspension is in order as well. Afterall he did just get physical with an NFL employee. And no doubt Shockey will need counseling too, given the trauma he just suffered. It’s outrageous I tell you.

Smith hit a player on his own team two different times, one of them I believe breaking a bone in his face. He damn well should have been suspended for that.
