Receiver Plaxico Burress is widely regarded in league circles as a first-rate knucklehead.
On Thursday, Burress made a rare (and possibly for him unprecedented) decision that reflects wisdom and prudence.
For more on the aftermath of Plaxico’s guilty plea on weapons charges, here’s our latest offering at SportingNews.com.
I am speechless , A guy shoots himself in the leg by accident at a nightclub and goes to prison for as long as a piece of trash goes for , who electricuted dogs ! All this while idiot republicans are toting guns into presidential town hall meetings!
I know all situations and states are different, but isn’t this odd? Burress got 2 years for only hurting himself (and his career). Vick got 23 months for the whole dog fighting and gambling saga. Then Stallworth got like 3 weeks for killing a man?
Burress makes a bad decision hurts himself, gets 2 years. Stallworth makes a bad decision, kills an innocent man and gets out before Mangina’s next menstrual cycle…The justice system in this country is odd.
have fun in jail PLAX….watch out for bubba!!!! Had the word by the cahoneys and you blew it…right threw your leg!! he got what he deserved!!
Plexiglass needs to call “The Cleaner, ” Tony Dungheap
Judging by her horrific spelling, punctuation, and reasoning skills, nflqb must be a Democrat.
Get it right, Burress had an unregistered gun and he did not have a permit to carry it. One has to wonder why someone would have an unregistered gun. Also…No one has brought a gun into a town hall meeting. Certain protesters with legally registered guns and permits to carry them did protest legally near a town hall meeting. If they had brought them into a presidential town hall meeting, the secret service would have killed or at least arrested them.
The point is it is rediculous this country allows whack jobs to carry guns at all, there is no reason a person in the united states needs to be carrying a gun around unless you are part of law enforcement.
Just like it is rediculous people can electricute dogs and not spend 1 day in prison for it , unless theres gambling ect… involved.
Well hopefully after obama gets this bill passed with the public option, guns eventually turn up on one of his tickets!
NFLqb-aren’t your “idiot” Democrats to blame for the most onerous gun laws in the USA in NYC? Plexiglass had a permit to carry in Florida but not in Demtown USA. You should take it up with “idiot” Dems Gov. Patterson, Charles Schumer, and acting Dem, Mayor Bloomberg.
Actually, his Florida permit was expired.
nflqb… it is spelled ridiculous (not to mention electrocute), and I don’t fear people that legally carry guns. Whack jobs are usually the ones that carry unregistered guns without a permit.
ON the surface maybe it looks unbalanced, but the cases aren’t similar at all.
Burress brought an unlicensed concealed hand gun into NYC. NYC has very succinct laws about unlicensed concealed hand guns. He shot himself & the bullet ricocheted & came very close to hitting a security guard at the club. NYC didn’t indict him for “accidentally” firing his gun; they clearly understood it was an accident. Actually, I commend the Rosenthal for not caving into Burress being a local sports star & being to lenient in his plea. Burress got the same treatment & deal anyone off the street would have gotten (before admitting guilt to a grand jury). The grand jury part is where Plax actually did get a break, he ADMITTED guilt to the grand jury & Rosenthal left the plea on the table for him after he was indicted.
Vick’s crimes are much more evil, deranged & dark. He was convicted for bankrolling a dog fighting operation ONLY. Not for the numerous non-fighting animals he viciously & for kicks tortured & killed. The DA Poindexter dropped the ball on the most evil part of the entire thing. Poindexter DID actually give Vick special treatment. Mike Vick should have spent much longer in jail if the Atlanta DA had done his job…
Being a Pats fan, and still in shock over the Championship game that we do not speak of, I ought to be absolutely elated about this.
No. Just empty. Anyplace else and he doesn’t get two years. Unfortunately, he picked a really, really, bad place to discharge an unlicensed weapon in public. And New York’s laws are New York’s laws. He lives and plays there, he needs to know these things. And kudos to the prosecutors for doing their jobs.
But I can’t help feel that situations like these should consider everything. Such as the fact that he had no criminal intent. Such as the fact that he was the only “victim”. Such as the fact that no one else was injured and it ended up being more comical and ridiculous than dangerous. Yes, I know he tried to cover it up, but a lot of us get goofy when we really screw up.
I hope he gets out early and I hope he gets a chance to play a few more years in the league. I’m sure when he gets out, he’ll be a deeper, smarter and more reflective citizen.
Big Giant fan here… I can’t be any more appreciative for what Burress has done in 2007 for us but he definitely has some issues. I can totally understand how some people can fall apart when they are worth millions. It happens to celebrities and athletes all the time. Money and fame will either make a person or break them. In Burress’s case, it slowly broke him.
I absolutely feel either his penalty was harsh or Vick’s penalty was light, one of these penalties are just not right. I think NY is making an example out of Burress and if it was any other Joe Schmo, the penalty may have been a little lighter.
I hope Burress becomes a better person after his sentence and I’d love to see him play a couple more years when he comes out.
8man well stated but rememebr he was in manhattan.
There are too many people there and its even worse to take a firearm into a place that serves liquor.
I’m fine with his penalty, I don’t care what his intent was, there are too many things that can go wrong with a firearm to have it in such a populated place that serves liquor. The fact that he didn’t have it registered properly, and was carrying the gun in a sweat pants, wtf?, shows that he didn’t respect the gun and what its capable of.
But 2 years and 2 holes later he will
