Giants might lose Jay Alford

As we’ve previously said, probably more than a few times, the top priority for the preseason is to emerge from the four games (five for the teams tapped to play in Canton) with minimal injuries.

The Giants picked up a potentially significant one on Saturday night, with defensive tackle Jay Alford reportedly suffering a torn MCL and a partially torn ACL.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Giants will wait a couple of weeks before deciding on a course of action.  The options will be to hold a roster spot for Alford until he’s ready to play, place him on season-ending injured reserve, waive him via an injury settlement approximating the date on which he’d be fully healed, or cut him and figure out how many game checks he should receive via the injury grievance process.

Because Alford snaps for field goals and extra points, the Giants undoubtedly will sign a new long snapper as soon as possible.

Maybe they’ll sign Trey Junkin.

Troubled Trey Junkin should reach out to Tony Dungheap to broker a reunion with the Giants. Doesn’t Trey Junkin deserve a 2nd chance?

Except Zak DeOssie does long snapping, hence why he went to the pro bowl as the long snapper for the NFC team.

It would be an absolute shock for the Giants to drop Alford. He was not a late round pick, had a key play in Super Bowl 42, and is definitely on the rise. Alford will be a part of the DT rotation for the near future…so if anything drastic must be done I’m sure it’ll be done with the intention of keeping Alford for the foreseeable future.

Deossie is their long snapper dope, check the nfc pro bowl roster. Your article is confusing as if Alford might even be cut loose, this is one kid they were relying on and was a beast in the playoff run his rookie year and on the rise..as usual do research

What’s really a shame is that he was finally starting to play really well. Hope the Giants keep him, but they are loaded on the D line, so if he has to go, it won’t be disastrous.

It sucks to see this happen, Alford’s pile drive of Brady in the Superbowl was classic. Zaggs doesn’t know what he’s talking about by the way, yes DeOssie snaps for punts, but Alford snaps for place kicks which still was great because the Giants didn’t have to waste a spot on the 53-man OR 45-man roster for a long snapper because both guys were key reserve defensive players anyway. I can only hope DeOssie can snap for kicks because otherwise this is a roster spot that will be taken when it could be used to keep someone like Tyree.

Tyree is probably gone. He has done nothing since coming back from his injury and doesn’t even look good on special teams, the one place he used to excel. Tough to see a legend get cut, but NY can’t afford to waste the space. I hate to say it, but he’s probably UFL bound. The guy had one hell of moment in NFL and Giants history, but I think the run is over.

Hey Dopes… DeOssie snaps for punts and punts only. Alford snaps for field goals and extra points. So there is a chance that they will look for another snapper…
