Raiders-49ers one-liners

WR Louis Murphy and QB JaMarcus Russell hooked up on a touchdown in the second quarter.

After LB Kirk Morrison went down with a dislocated elbow, Raiders LB Ricky Brown impressed with seven tackles and an interception.

It’s a good thing that the Raiders aren’t playing Vince Lombardi’s Packers, given their inability to defend against the sweep, as explained by DE Greg Ellis:  “The 49ers kept running the same play where they were pulling some of
the offensive linemen around. . . .  It wasn’t like they were able to run any
play and get yards on us, that one play we just didn’t handle well.
Then they did what anybody should do, they kept repeating it, one side
to another, and they kept having success with it.”

Raiders coach Tom Cable said the reason for problems running the ball is that the offensive line’s pad level is too high.

Said Raiders LB Thomas Howard of the team’s inability to stop the run, “I don’t really want to go into everything I’m thinking, but things must
change. Things must be cleaned up.  It’s not that the runs were
difficult.  You knew what was coming.”

49ers QB Alex Smith didn’t throw the ball particularly well, but flashed other skills with a big block on DE Greg Ellis and a touchdown-saving tackle on LB Ricky Brown’s interception return.

Smith needed an X-ray on his right thumb following the tackle of Brown, but said it was no big deal, while the 49ers haven’t revealed the results.

Said 49ers RB Glen Coffee, “I might have done that [go for 16, 18 and 35 yards on successive runs] in
high school once, maybe college.  I don’t know.  But like I
said, the line definitely made it very easy for me tonight.”

The 49ers’ pass rush was still minimal, but they recorded their first sack of the preseason when Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell tripped over RB Darren McFadden.

49ers CB Nate Clements was upset with his performance after getting flagged for pass interference and beaten for a touchdown pass.

Nate’s PI was the result of him getting burned so bad, that he had to tug on the jersey of his guy to slow him down. He was toasted so bad, that it was laughable. It was an easy TD, if he hadn’t gone out of his way to get that PI call. He damn well should be upset.

Higgins is no slouch, to say the least. He’s got mad speed and he’s a real athlete.

Nate, “I love it when you can’t compete!!!”
