Singletary says he’s no closer to naming a starter

Both Alex Smith nor Shaun Hill looked flat during last night’s preseason game against the Raiders.

As a result, 49ers coach Mike Singletary says he’s no closer to naming a starter.

“We’ll review film tomorrow and we’ll talk about it then, see how far we are from making that decision,” Singletary said in comments circulated by the team.

Asked whether neither quarterback did anything to distinguish himself, Singletary did his best impression of Rocky Balboa: “Absolutely.”

(Prior reports suggested that Hill was in the lead, and that Smith needed a strong performance against the Raiders to close the gap.)

The next game -- the third of the preseason -- represents the closest thing to a dry run for Week One. Some coaches (like Raheem Morris of the Bucs) think it’s critical to name a starter by then.

For now, however, Singletary isn’t talking about whether he’ll decide between Smith and Hill before the August 29 game at Dallas.

“I don’t know,” Singletary said. “I don’t really want to get into that. We just have to sit down and take our time, evaluate, and look at a number of things.”

Some of the things they should look at is whether any other better quarterbacks are available, before they sign with the UFL.
