Wilfork, Kaczur present conflicting situations for the Pats

The Patriots supposedly haven’t extended the contract of defensive tackle Vince Wilfork due to uncertainty with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and the union.

Wilfork doesn’t buy it.

“Not at all, because there’s 31 other teams out there, and a lot of them are making moves,” Wilfork said Sunday, per Ian Rapaport of the Boston Herald.  “They’re in the same situation we’re in.  I understand what he’s saying, but at the same token, it’s not stopping the other teams from making their moves, and what they have to do.  Trust me, I understand where they’re coming from.  We have a lot of guys on this team that are going to be up.  Pretty good players.  I know that’s pretty tough for them, but at the same time, the labor situation, it’s all over the NFL, so, it is what it is.  Like I said, it doesn’t stop other teams from making moves.”

Elsewhere in the locker room, one of Wilfork’s teammates was singing a different tune, and in doing so confirming Wilfork’s position that business can still be transacted.

Offensive tackle Nick Kaczur said that he’s one of the guys as to whom the Patriots will be “making their moves.”

“I’m obviously excited because this is one of the best, if not the
best, organization in football
, the way you get treated from Mr. Kraft
to everyone here,” Kaczur said, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe.

“I think that speaks well for what they do here, that the players
like it here and like the way things go that they want to stay,” Kaczur said  “It’s
really exciting to know that they would like to continue working with
you.”

Kaczur, like Wilfork, is signed through the 2009 season.  Kaczur is due to earn a base salary of $2.27 million.  Wilfork is scheduled to earn $2.2 million.

That said, Wilfork is likely expecting a lot more money going forward than Kaczur, especially since Wilfork plays the same position that resulted in a $41 million guaranteed payday for Albert Haynesworth.

    @ Florio
Last time I checked, Wilfork plays NT in a 34 and Haynesworth playse DT in a 43. They may be interior linemen but their jobs are far different. It’s not exactly splitting hairs. C’mon, watch more football, you’ll learn things and not make these obvious mistakes.

Umm, Vince, they drafted your replacement in the 2nd round this year. If I were you, I’d start worrying, lol.
Oh, and Kaczur is a pill-popping snitch who should be in prison instead of negotiating a new contract. Lot of nice guys up there in Foxboro, starting with the cheating scumbag, walking penis in the hoody.

  3. Real Football Fan says: Aug 24, 2009 1:09 AM

The bottom line is that the Patriots don’t consider Wilfork a core component going forward. They’ve ridden him as far as they want to go with him, and his replacement was drafted in April in the form of Ron Brace.
Bitching and moaning about that won’t change anything. There will be several teams that will pay to bring him into the fold, probably even Miami where he played his college ball as Ferguson is up there in years.

  4. Shamrock says: Aug 24, 2009 1:15 AM

Kaczur the drug abuser isn’t going to get a new contract. Besides being a doper, he’s a crappy right tackle.
The Pats drafted Sebastian Vollmer in the 2nd round. Vollmer will be their RT in 2010.

  5. misterj says: Aug 24, 2009 2:07 AM

The difference is of course that Wilfork is way better than Haynesworth.

    @ The Wishbone
Last time I checked, the Pats played their first preseason game almost exclusively in the 4-3 and they played about half the second game in the 4-3.
C’mon, watch more football, you’ll learn things and not look like an idiot calling someone out when you’re the one who’s wrong.

  7. BP says: Aug 24, 2009 2:51 AM

Kaczur pretty much sucks so he will come cheap. Wilfork has become too expensive to keep. Ron Brace will fill his spot.
The lines are changing next year. Wilfork and Seymour will likely be gone on D. Light and possibly Mankins gone on offense.
It would be nice for them to keep Wilfork or Mankins, but without a discount it is unlikely.
The Pat’s ass is still a little sore from the way Seymour bent them over already, so he won’t get squat from them.

    Hey Wishbone,
Why don’t you lay out the differences between a 3-4 nose tackle and a 4-3 defensive tackle? The only knowledge you just displayed is an attention to detail. Go on, tell us what makes their jobs so different…

  9. Ripp says: Aug 24, 2009 3:39 AM

Hey Wishbone you are correct in saying that but there is only one thing…………NT are a hole lot more difficult to find than DT which makes Wilfork in prime position for a huge payday.

  10. faulkn22 says: Aug 24, 2009 6:30 AM

Wishbone… if you want to be technical, they are both NT’s (3-4 and 4-3 both have a NT, while the 4-3 also has an UT).
They’ll both certainly be double teaming at over 350 lbs. Different schemes, pretty similar players, actually.
4-3 teams don’t just grab two DT’s with similar size. They like a smaller guy to disrupt (UT) and a monster to doubleteam (NT).
    Class dismissed.
PS: Florio probably watches enough football to make all of our heads spin.

Thank you Florio! This one is toooooooo easy to pass up.
“I’m obviously excited because this is one of the best, if not the best, organization in football, the way you get treated from Mr. Kraft to everyone here,” Kaczur said, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe.
    ******************************************
Of course your excited. Where else can a “turnstyle” lineman keep his job solely because he is a Oxycontin dopehead dealer to his teammates and owner, and NOT get disciplined.

  12. gameday says: Aug 24, 2009 6:46 AM

“I think that speaks well for what they do here, that the players like it here and like the way things go that they want to stay,” Kaczur said “It’s really exciting to know that they would like to continue working with you.”

A team of dopeheads will always like to work closely with their dealer.
    Pats are Cheaters and dopeheads.

  13. gameday says: Aug 24, 2009 6:48 AM

Vince Wilfork needs more money ASAP so he can afford to pay all the fines for his dirty play this season, just like all his previous seasons.
A dirty cheater, just like the whole team.

He also receives protection from the U.S. marshalls department, insulation from the league, 20 Oxycontin pills a day, and $50,000 a year from the DEA to snitch.
What a classy organization. The new Bengals

Wow, man. There is a whole lot of jealousy in all of these posts! This is going to be a fun year.
    Cheaters waa waa waa.
Dope dealer snitch waa waa waa
And the classic, and ever so clever “Belicheat”. The wit is amazing.
I only wish that I could be sitting next to you guys watching the Patriot games this year. There is nothing that warms my heart more than whiners in misery.

  17. chak says: Aug 24, 2009 7:25 AM

I’m a Pats fan and I can’t stand Kaczur. For you guys that hate on him for the Oxycontin, go ahead and hate. He deserves it. The guy is a turnstile and if he doesn’t step it up then Brady is going to go down again this year. Thankfully Vollmer is looking really promising.

  18. chak says: Aug 24, 2009 7:26 AM

@gameday – you must be a chargers fan or something to hate the pats so much. every post sounds like you typed it through tears of jealousy. get over it dude

  19. whywerule says: Aug 24, 2009 7:26 AM

The bottom line is that the Patriots don’t consider Wilfork a core component going forward….
I am certain the Pats would love to keep Wilfork around if it can be an affordable scenario for the Pats. Kaczur is not going to break anyone’s bank; Wilfork knows that he can get $30 million in guarantees (or more) from some team, and that is probably too expensive for the Pats tastes. I don’t think the two contract scenarios can be fairly compared, since one player is NFL cheap, and Wilfork is NFL elite.

Vince Wilfork needs more money ASAP so he can afford to pay all the fines for his dirty play this season, just like all his previous seasons….
And yet, if Wilfork makes it to free agency, there will likely be a minimum of a dozen teams contacting his agent to discuss salary parameters for a possible offer (yes, more than just teams with a 3-4 base defense). And one of those teams will be your preferred team. And, of course, if he signs with your favorite team, you will be singing a different tune (as will the rest of the many Pats enviers on this site).

Who cares, the Patriots could take a pile of shat off the street and turn it in to a quality D-player.

  24. tj.52 says: Aug 24, 2009 8:19 AM

The problem is that Wilfork thinks he should get Haynesworth money when in fact their situations are very different.
Wilfork is a 2 down lineman in the 3-4 defense which is, as of now, the primary defense employed by the Patriots. He only plays in half of the defensive plays. Haynesworth can be left on the field on 3rd down to rush the passer, Wilfork most times is not.
Wilfork plays on a team that practices consistent financial responsibility. Haynesworth was signed by the Redskins.
I have not followed Haynesworth closely over the years, but I can safely say that Wilfork’s developement and success have been aided by the pro-developemental atmosphere instilled by the Patriots.
Add to all of this the number of championships the team has won since Wilfork became the full time starter: -0-
The only solution is to let Wilfork go. Some team will overpay for him and he can spend the rest of his career on a less than average team. If he tries to sit out the season, trade him. If he plays and won’t sign, franchise and trade him.

  25. whywerule says: Aug 24, 2009 8:32 AM

Who cares, the Patriots could take a pile of shat off the street and turn it in to a quality D-player….
Not always. The Pats can usually turn a pile of shat into at least a serviceable defensive player, but there are exceptions (e.g., Monty Beisel, Duane Starks, Deltha O’Neal — you get the picture).

  26. footballnut says: Aug 24, 2009 8:44 AM

Kazcur will not be back with NE, unless he takes a contract befitting a 2nd or third string RT.
Vollmer will be the new RT before mid season this year after Brady takes a few substantial front side hits.
Wilfork is indeed considered a major component as he can play in both the 3-4 as the NT, and can play an interior DL in a 4-3. The Pats will be employing more 4-3 this year as Bill seems to favor the anti trend and more teams are employing the 3-4. His play this year will certainly determine what the Pats do later in the offseason.
Seymour is gone unless there are no major takers and he agrees to a franchise friendly deal, but I don’t see that happening. Mankins will be back.
The question on the difference of a NT and Inside Tackle on the DL is intriguing. I believe a NTs first and foremost job is to take on mulitple blockers in a 2 gap system and a DL is mostly a one gap and can be freed to pursue the QB more often, other than that not much of a difference. Maybe the Interior DL will have better stats other than the run stops…
And gameday, no one here is crying, just pointing out you obviously have no life…I just noticed the times you posted on this thread alone and you’ve been on this for almost 2 hours already.

  27. Devils Advocate says: Aug 24, 2009 8:46 AM

your talking about an O lineman who is a borderline starter but a solid contributor and comparing him to a “franchise type” player. it’s like comparing apples and oranges not to mention about 25 million gauranteed.
they were both asked fair questions and gave honest answers but this post is a big reach.

The Patriots have a bunch of players in the last year of their contracts. Wilfork may get franchised. The Patriots really need to plan carefully who will get the money. Kaczur won’t be near the same income bracket as Wilfork next year. I think the owners will be playing hardball after the season with the CBA. The recession is going to impact revenues which will be bad for the players.

  36. Pastabelly says: Aug 24, 2009 12:18 PM

Instead of counting his money, Kaczur should work a little harder at preventing Brady from getting knocked on his ass again.

If Wilfork leaves, it might be the first time in nearly a decade, that the Cheats won’t have the league’s dirtiest player, as voted by their peers. Since Wilfork inherited the deplorable title with Rod HGH Harrison’s retirement.
