Eric Mangini continues to do everything he can in order to avoid giving hints about which quarterback will be under center when the Browns host the Vikings on September 13th. He won’t even give any hints about which one will be taking the first snap when the Titans come to Cleveland on Saturday night.
Mangini said Thursday that both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn will see time with the first team during the third preseason game, and that no one should be too concerned about which order they appear in the game.
“No, I wouldn’t read anything into that, at all,” Mangini said. “Somebody has to, but the goal is to get a balance and that hasn’t changed.”
Anderson and Quinn will find out which one of them gets to go first on Friday, and each should get several chances to run the offense with the starters expected to play into the second half. Both quarterbacks expressed their desire to do the best they can with whatever opportunities come their way.
Those opportunities are starting to run out, though. The third preseason game is traditionally the last one to feature more than cameo appearances by first teamers, but Mangini refused to give it any more weight in his evaluation process.
“I’d say it’s a piece of the puzzle,” Mangini said while continuing to offer nothing about what that puzzle will look like when all the pieces are in place.
This has been going on for so long I honestly think of the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback as Anderson-Quinn.
Browns fans must wonder what it’s like to have a decisive coach.
All this is going to do is hender Quinn’s development. We all know what DA is about. Its Quinn’s time to shine.
ok everyone, here’s what will happen: Mangini will continue to split reps between the two and name the starter just before the first regular season game, hoping to keep the other team guessing, but it really won’t matter because their #1 WR can’t catch the ball no matter who throws it to him, their running game is terrible, and their defense will be just as bad as it was last year. Basically, the Browns will continue to suck.
It’s not like naming one the starter and not the other affects their trade value either. If ManKok is smart, they will name Quinn the starter and try to trade DA to get someone to actually help their team in return. Not naming the starting QB doesn’t help their team, it just makes it so the rest of the offense takes longer to develop.
I agree with Rob 100%. Go with Quinn for the full season. See what he is capable of doing. At the end of the season, if Quinn just doesn’t get it and it is obvious that he isn’t cut out to be a starter in the NFL then we look at the draft. There is obvious talent at the position in next years draft and I think it would make sense to pick one in the first round if Quinn isn’t the answer. We all know that Anderson sure the hell isn’t. Don’t let last weeks game full you.
what this means is quinn isnt even close yet.
Mangini can always call his old friend. I think Romeo Crennel still has a coin.
OK, here’s my take after watching Averagseon for 4 games in ’06 thru 23 games in ’07 and ’08-
Averegson under center in ’09= 4-6 wins
Quinn under center in ’09 = 8-10 wins
I want to see a complete QB, not a “Arm like Tarzan/Plays like Jane” QB like Averageson!
Book it Danno!
Either way they are toast come week 1.
I sort of agree with the philosophy that the Browns should “see what Quinn can do,” but don’t any of the Brady-lovers and apologists think there’s something wrong with the fact that Brady can’t definitively win the job outright?
By doing this stupid back and forth, it means neither quarterback will be ready for the first game.
