Mike Reiss heads to ESPNBoston.com

It’s going to be hard to keep badgering ESPN if they continue to hire people we like.

Last week, our friend Adam Schefter arrived in Bristol.  This week, word has emerged that our pal Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe, one of the best beat writers in the business (and now I’ve just pissed off Dan Leberfeld . . . again) will join ESPN’s new Boston-only portal, ESPNBoston.com.

According to Michael David Smith of FanHouse, Reiss and Peter Gammons and Michael Smith and Bill Simmons will contribute content to the ESPN-owned site devoted solely to Boston sports.

It’s the continuation of ESPN’s evil plan to dominate the world, with a series of smaller sites that focus on one specific city, and thus drive the local newspapers further into submission, Wal-Mart style.

Previously, there were rumors that Reiss was under consideration for the job at NFL Network vacated earlier this year by Schefter.

So congrats to Mike Reiss, and best wishes for continued success, even if such success will come as a member of the Mother Ship.

“ESPN-owned site devoted solely to Boston sports.”
If you had written “Boston and New York sports,” that would pretty much describe ESPN.com.

Congrats to Reiss. He seems like one of the good guys.
May the liberal newspapers die a slow, agonizing death.

All you did is drive traffic away from your site and towards ESPNBoston.com.
I thought you hated ESPN or something?

Mike Reiss is the best beat writer in the NFL, and the Globe’s web page has so much crap on it now it’s almost unusable, so as evil as ESPN is this might actually be a good thing.

…the ESPN-owned site devoted solely to Boston sports.

    So, basically … ESPN.com.

What? ESPN is officially splitting up their coverage to Boston only and NY Only?
So now, instead of normal ESPN being 50% Boston coverage and 50% NY-related coverage, we’ll get 50% NY and 50% the rest of the world?
    Yeah, right.
For anyone from ESPN reading this – go straight to hell, and learn to cover things west of, oh, say….Philadelphia.
    Jackasses.

Mike Reiss = quality and integrity.
He won’t last long in scuzville.

That is really a shame. Why Mike, why?

  9. Nideak says: Aug 27, 2009 8:22 PM

I thought ESPN already had a boston-only portal called ‘espn.com’.

This is great for Reiss. His talents were completely wasted at the Globe. Michael Holley, Michael Smith, Mike Reiss … basically all the good, young sportswriters leave the Globe for greener pastures when they realize there’s no way aging blowhards like Shaughnessy will be displaced.

I hate ESPN, but I love Mike’s reporting. He has long been the best and most accurate reporter covering the Patriots. Ahh the humanity!
Log in, log out, log back in, grrrr!

How would you feel IS they hired your editor away?

Florio your like a 90′s conspiracy theorist..is that the right word? Either way, I see you with a tinfoil hat and coat hangers hanging all over your house to block ESPN from reading your brain…keep up the good work.

ESPNBoston.com sounds like a great place for Bill Simmons. It includes his entire target audience, so… Why was he ever given a national audience anyway?

Mike Reiss is a good guy and a class act. Class move by Mike Florio is recognizing the career moves by Reiss and Schefter. King, Schefter, Florio, Glazzer and Reiss are the best in the business.

Because the guys at ESPN thought it was high time SOMEONE stood up and said “Hey, I’m a fan of the Patriots and Red Sox, and I’m going to talk to you about them incessantly”.

I guess a congratulations is in order for Mike Reiss if you can congratulate someone for going to ESPN.
Now with Mike on the payroll, and all the readers he brings ESPN’s way, ESPN should spend a little money on revamping their ESPNBoston.com website…it is absolutely a piece of crap.

You’re probably right. He’s an entertaining writer, but his huge green Celtics boner gets in the way of otherwise good writing. He’s kind of like those HEAD-ON commercials. Repeat the same shit every day at high volume.
