Everyone here is missing the point.
to quote Florio: “Our point isn’t that Rex Ryan will be a bad coach…The bottom line here is that, if Rex Ryan is hoping to persuade anyone that he’s not just like his dad, Rex already has failed.”
There’s no “if” about it.
Rex Ryan has said several times when questioned about his brash speech about Crowder and Belichick that he’s got to be himself, and that means everything that comes with it. So Rex Ryan certainly is NOT hoping to persuade anyone that he is different from his father. He is going to be himself, and that means taking the bad with the good.
Will that bring scrutiny due to the fact that he’s got zero wins as a head coach? Yes. And he acknowledged that when asked to clarify his Belichick comments: “When I said what I said about Bill Belichick, I was just letting him know we’re in same position. He happens to have a lot of Super Bowl trophies and I don’t have a win yet — I appreciate you point that out. But you don’t just tiptoe through this thing…We’re going to be ourselves and I’m going to be myself and that’s just the way it is.”
Tannenbaum knew what he was risking in hiring Ryan, but part of the reason he was likely willing to take that risk is because the players, fans, and media were tired of the opposite approach taken by failed head coach Eric Mangini. Had Mangini won, people wouldn’t hold his style against him. They criticize his style for the same reason they praise Belichick’s style (which happens to be the same). The difference: Belichick wins games, Mangini didn’t with the Jets.
As for contentions that Rex’s words will cause other front offices to be even more wary of hiring his brother Rob as a head coach, I’m sure that Rob wouldn’t begrudge his brother anything. The Ryans are a feisty bunch, and none of them pretend otherwise. They simply know who they are and aren’t afraid of upsetting the status quo.
The real bottom line is always the same when it comes to coaches: Their style means very little compared to their win loss record.

There’s a difference between being outspoken and being petty. Even before you could hear the thuds of the sleds in mini-camps, Rex Ryan deemed it necessary to engage in an insult exchange with Channing Crowder. Class it up, Rex. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved Ryan’s smashmouth approach to football, but he’s a head coach now. It’s time for him to act like a head coach, not a thug.

Check Buddy’s record as a head coach. .500 in the regular season, no playoff wins. For comparison’s sake… Wade Phillips is a better coach. .588, no playoff wins.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Rex will end up as a carbon copy of Buddy. The definition of average, and no playoff wins.

Florio is nuts. I thought he was a lawyer. How could he malign Rex for being anything because of something Bart Scott said? It makes no sense to me.
By the way, I was a huge Buddy fan when he was Head Coach of the Eagles. It was fun every Sunday. The guy we have now is boring, nowhere near as much fun and the past couple of years hasn’t put a good team on the field to boot. I wish they have given him the boot.

Why is it that any coach that actually opens his mouth and talks a little (singletary, ryan) is “bad for the NFL?” A lot of fans find their candor refreshing than the standard responses we usually receive.
Oh wait…Coaches that don’t say anything are also criticized here (Mangini). Guess we just need more company men that don’t rock the boat in the NFL.

If anyone thinks the Jets will be a player this year, you’re deluded. They have a first year head coach who doesn’t have the brain chemistry for the position and they have a first year quarterback who had a total of 16 starts at USC. They’re going to battle Miami for last place in the AFC East.

I said it the other day with my “like father like son” post, where ya been?
That’s not necessarily all bad. Ryan at least spices up the most boring team in the most boring division. It’ll be fun hearing his trash talk and disrespect to Belicheat when they play the Patriots twice a year. And I have no doubt the Jet D will be a better unit because of him.
I’m not so sure about Sanchez though, who could be yet another overrated USC bust at QB. But that’ll be fun to find out too.

Serious speculation on this one. Just because Rex is outspoken doesn’t mean he’s a jerk. His dad was both. But so far anyway, Rex has actually been very respectful of other teams – he gave respect to both NE and BAL while also saying he and his team isn’t intimidated by them. What’s wrong with that?
Here’s the thing – if his last name wasn’t Ryan, he wouldn’t be getting this crap. Don’t make him responsible for the sins of the father.

Rex Ryan is good for the league. We need a coach to throw off that lame-ass Belichik-Reid “the media is scum and I’m going to treat press conferences like I’m being lined up in front of a war tribunal” mentality. So what if a coach is talking tough? That just means he gets it. Pro Football is a glorified, supercharged game.
But I guess you love reporting when Belichik says “We’re not going to talk about that today”. That REALLY gets a lot of readers in, you know, between gameday calling people Massholes and hayward giablowmi chafing his lips on Brady’s knob.

What’s the best record anyone’s had for the 49ers in the last 20 years? That’s what I thought.

Harbaugh is a class guy.
Ryan isn’t.
Whether either of them is a good head coach still remains to be seen.
That said, the Ravens are likely to do much better than the Jests this year.

Bart Scott has a history of making stupid comments and penalties. No one should be suprised he’s doing the same thing up in Gotham!
Rex, barely made it to D coordinator after several years of being passed over, I mean the guy got into a fight with his neighbor that was well publicised. He’s a lot like his daddy and proud of it!
Like other posters have said Have at least one winning season as a head coach and then pop off. Ozzie, Ray, Reed, Ngata , 1 hall of famer, 2 first ballot hall of famers and One developing HOF’er are the Ravens Defense.
Rex and Bart will be lucky to have 3 years with the Jets.
