Our theory, to date, regarding Tony Romo is that he already has achieved far more than any undrafted slappy ever could have dreamed possible, and so he became complacent regarding his career as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys -- and smitten with the Hollywood lifestyle that goes along with it. (As Taco Bill's latest item points out, that Hollywood lifestyle might get him smitten in different ways.)
In our view, Romo settled for a big-money contract that didn't fully reflect his market value because, even though the deal resided at the low end of the top-tier quarterback market, it represented far more money than Romo ever expected to pocket when he was trying to stay afloat on the bottom of the Dallas roster.
We also think that his "just happy to be here" mindset has kept him from becoming the kind of leader that his teammates need. And it's obvious that he hasn't been a good leader; if he were, the Cowboys wouldn't have needed to cut receiver Terrell Owens in order to give Romo a chance to blossom.
A good leader would have found a way to manage Owens and any other narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole on the roster. Though they don't get much worse than T.O., he's not the first narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole who has donned a football helmet. (After all, I once wore one.)
But Romo apparently is changing. Or, at a minimum, he's trying to change.
"Obviously the way I was before wasn't getting the job done to the extent to the goal you want to accomplish," Romo says, per the Associated Press. "So you just keep going and keep going and hopefully you are able to accomplish that one day. I can see improvement."
Romo also seems to admit that, indeed, he had grown too satisfied with his accomplishments in the NFL, and he wasn't pushing for more.
"Either you are trying to get better or you are content as a player," Romo said. "I am not content. I don't think this team is. We are striving to be a team that we hope can make everybody excited or have an exciting time watching us play this season."
It all sounds good on paper. It remains to be seen whether Romo can pull it off.
The challenge will come from convincing the guys who have been part of the team that there's a new sheriff in town. To truly make his case, Romo needs to be ready to get in the face and/or up the rear end of anyone who isn't fully on board with what the Cowboys are trying to accomplish.
Probably too late.
I guess "asshole" isn't on the list. Neither is "bitch". Is it strictly the "seven words"? I gotta know. I don't wanna get banned.
it's easy to talk in August.
It's a much different story in December/January. Until he proves he can win when it counts, I don't believe it.
Him realizing he sucks isn't going to change the fact he still sucks and with one less weapon.
you set yourself up with that "up the rear end" phrase, Florio
"So you just keep going and keep going and hopefully you are able to accomplish that one day."
"Hope" is not a plan, son.
narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole
I thought you were talking about the owner for a minute, I was going to challenge the statement on the grounds that Jerry Jones is not the least bit malcontented with the exception of the placement of his video screen.
As for the winner of the Gomer Pyle look alike contest, come back and talk after you actually won a playoff game, which might be another 10 years from now.
44-6
He needs to start by wiping that ridiculous smirk off his face.
" To truly make his case, Romo needs to be ready to get in the face and/or up the rear end of anyone who isn't fully on board with what the Cowboys are trying to accomplish. "
@Steeler & Kevin
Cue the Tony "Homo" jokes now....
-------------------
I'm sorry... where does he admit to being content in the past?
Florio must have been getting less and less hits lately. Only one way to clean that up. Cowboys news.
Do they teach reading comprehension in law school?
***I am not content***
What does that mean to you, Florio?
Headline: "Romo admits he needed to Change"
Step 1: Do not babble snaps on field goal attempts
Good for him. He's a young man who has worked hard to get where he is. Sometimes you falter, but he's got the character to get back up.
I am gonna go with Romo [read: Homo] going "up the rear" of those who aren't on-board...
I agree that Romo should be a more agressive leader if this team is to go anywhere, but history tells us that it would have made no difference in the T.O. situation. Three teams, three quarterbacks thrown under the bus, and 3 locker rooms in turmoil. And, if they keep him past his traditional honeymoon season, Owens will tear the Bills up next.
Any correlation between Romo's rise under Parcells and his plateau under Phillips????
"After all, I once wore one."
Stop lying.
I for one, am happy to hear this. I am a fan of Tony Romo and appreciate what he has done in Dallas. This is a guy that replaced Drew Bledsoe in 2006 while the team was falling fast and turned everything around. People LOVE to talk bad about him b/c of his late season struggles but the guy is still young in the starting role. Remember, it took Eli Manning 4 seasons until he won his first playoff game (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that he won the SB also that year), but then he was one and done the next year and got the LARGEST contract an NFL player has ever received. Give the guy a chance....
Romo is a total turnover machine. Probably the most over-rated quarterback in the NFL.
I seriously doubt he will ever win a playoff game.
If you don't have a burning "thrash-your-opponent-by-6-touchdowns and win-at-all-costs" mentality as an NFL quarterback, you will be a failure.
Romo never had it. Never will.
How the hell does Florio get from Point A to Point B on this quote?

Makes NO sense. Romo was not seemingly admitting that he HAD become too content. Not at all.
Spoken pretty well from the Best QB in the NFC....
GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!
Bulls@*# Mister Hand Man(Enter The Dragon)! This dude will continue to fade away in December when the big boys are trading punches in the cold weather! Over rated!
Tony Romo is overrated. Give me a break. He must be happy to be in the regular season. Because he seems to sure hate playing during the playoffs.
While I agree that Romo has been just happy to be there, I don't think we can blame Owens on him. No quaterback has been able to reel him in yet. (Good luck Trent Edwards.) As to his contract, we praise Tom Brady for signing a deal below market value to leave money to sign other players, let's not criticize Romo for not squeezing every penny out possible out of the Cowboys.

did he soil himself at the thought of a playoff win?
"A good leader would have found a way to manage Owens and any other narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole on the roster."
So, then, Jeff Garcia, Steve Mariucci, Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid aren't "good leaders" either? Or did the way TO blew up on all of them show they had "found a way to manage" him?
So you are saying Garcia and McNabb aren't leaders either? They are just happy to be playing too I guess.
This is all good in concept, but then again December is destined to came around again this year.
A good leader would have found a way to manage Owens and any other narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole on the roster.

Totally agree with the statement, but I think you need to be "bounced" for the foul language.
"So you just keep going and keep going and hopefully you are able to accomplish that one day."
"We are striving to be a team that we hope can make everybody excited or have an exciting time watching us play this season."
Not exactly among the great inspirational statements of all time. I'd be more encouraged if he'd use the word "win" more often. Or at all. Like, say, this hypothetical statement:
"I won't be satisfied until we win a Super Bowl. We are not going to stop short of that goal. We have everything we need, and now it's time for us to step up and get it done."
As a Cowboys fan, I hope he manages to do it. But history makes me a skeptic.
Florio -- you have a way with words.
Romo admits that he had grown too satisfied by saying, "I am not content"??? Am I missing the logic?
"I'm sorry... where does he admit to being content in the past? "
You can tell that Florio's becoming part of the MSM. Make a claim, provide a quote that has nothing to do with the claim, half of the retards on here will agree that the quote says exactly what Florio says it does.
It's how Obama got elected.

But that quote would be torn apart as coming from a guy that wants to win one Super Bowl and that's it.
What you Dallas haters forget to realize is that Tony Romo is going into his 3rd season as a starter. Compare his stats to Peyton, Brady, Eli, and any other QB as to what they did or where they were at by the same time in their careers. When you are in the most coveted position in football you are held to higher standards.
Mike Florio. Dumbest sports writer ever.
Such hatred, JimmySmith! Have all of those beatdowns at the hands of the Cowboysfried your brain? 44-6? I thought you were a Packer fan, bitch?!?
How about 27-16? In Lamebeau Field. Almost 500 yards of offense, including over 200 rushing yards, remember that? All you can say in response is "Go Eagirls", really?
hahahaha
To truly make his case, Romo needs to be ready to get up in the rear end of anyone who isn't fully on board with what the Cowboys are trying to accomplish.
@redsquare & killapup
I didn't know the Commie was a Cowbutt fan.
I see the connection now. I bet you guys are hoping that Romo the Homo realizes that you are not fully on board with what the Cowboys are trying to accomplish...so that Romo can make his case with you.
What are you saying that Donovan McNabb is not a good leader, Or are you saying Romo and all the others should have kissed T.O. ass.
Romo is a good quarterback before Halloween. Afterwards, he is beyond wretched. The Cowboys are 6-14 versus Andy Reid.
Oh brother, watch Romo have a good season and all you naysayers will be saying "I told you so".
The lack of success hasn't been all on the shoulders of one man, there is a whole team/coaching staff to blame as well.
Also, Florio, ya, that's the reason they got rid of TO-HA. They saw more in Roy. TO is a total idiot but he did/does not control any team. These so called superstars think they do but nay.
What a waste of space this story was.
Maybe people just got too carried away with how good the guy actually is.
I mean, he's been surrounded by top-shelf talent the entire time he's been there. Good line, good targets, good backs, good defense.
A lot of mediocre QBs would put up big numbers if they were surrounded with so many Pro Bowlers.
I'm not saying Romo's bad, just that he isn't as good as he's made out to be. Who catches Jason Campbell's passes? Who catches Eli Manning's passes? Or McNabb's?
QBs aside, the Cowboys have had the most talented offense in the NFC East, on paper at least, for several years now. No surprise that Romo puts up gaudy numbers.
Questions for the Romo-haters out there:
1) Just exactly how could Romo have solved the loss of his starting LG, and the inadequate substitute that caused him to run for his life half the season?
2) How could Romo have done any more with a broken finger, than he did?
3) How could Romo have done anything from rehab (thanks to the inadequate LG substitute) to dial back the age meter on geriatric Brad Johnson?
4) How could Romo have prevented T.O. from dropping every 4th ball that came his way?
5) How could Romo have stopped two long runs by BAL when he doesn't play defense?
6) How could Romo have prevented the special teams from sucking so badly?
7) How could Romo have made the running game more effective, given the loss of the LG and the two top RB's?
8) How could Romo have overcome the opposing defenses, knowing that the Cowboys had a weak running game, overplaying the pass?
A lot of people blame the collapse last year, the turnovers, the poor running game, the inevitable T.O. explosion, on Romo. Freaking ridiculous. Do these people know ANYTHING about the game of football? It's a team sport... win or lose.
First off Tony everyone has had Jessica before you so to late on dumping that trailer trash
Second Tony dont change we love you just the way you are a total bum when it counts
Did you go to Eli and Paytons camp this summer they could teach you how to win and show you those nice rings they got

What did Donovan McNabb have to say about Romo being content? I haven't read that article anywhere.
someone should ask phil simms what it's like playing quarterback for bill parcells, from what i've heard simms say on occasion, parcells never lets up on the qb.maybe, just maybe this is the tuff love romo needs to get to the next level.since parcells left dallas, the quaterback situation has stagnated and it's the coach's fault.
"A good leader would have found a way to manage Owens and any other narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole on the roster."
Garcia and McNabb couldn't manage Owens, how could anyone expect Romo to do it? You would think he'd be tougher than he is...you know...having a name that rhymes with Homo.
Over rated, Over paid, Over hyped.
Nice if he could win in December.
"Romo is a good quarterback before Halloween. Afterwards, he is beyond wretched."
His career post-Halloween passer rating is 93.2. 47 TDs, 28 INTs. 64% completion percentage, 7.9 yards per attempt.
Big Ben Frankenberger has thrown 50 career post-Halloween TDs against 39 INTs in case you were wondering.
Agree with Roger. For the most part, Romo has played pretty good in these big games. Crayton drops a big pass against NY and Fasano drops a touchdown, but it's Romo that can't win the big game. He's played better in big games than McNabb has in my opinion.
"Spoken pretty well from the Best QB in the NFC....
------------
What did Donovan McNabb have to say about Romo being content?"
Wow, on what grounds do you base the opinion that McNabb is the best QB in the NFC? There's no evidence to support it. Manning's the most successful QB in the NFCE by far, Romo's the highest rated by far. Campbell's durable and not a whining crybaby, so he has at least that over McNabb.
"Who catches Jason Campbell's passes?"
Moss, Cooley, Lloyd, Portis, Randle El.
"Who catches Eli Manning's passes?"
Well he did have Shockey and Toomer. And Burress. And Tiki.
"Or McNabb's?"
Whoever the checkdown guy is, usually Westbrook.
"First off Tony everyone has had Jessica before you so to late on dumping that trailer trash"
Everybody knows you're still a virgin.
well florio, you already have a hair-helmet. you needed another one too?

the season was on the line. win and in. instead, they didnt show up to play.
well, it was december... or january...
(2nd week in a row too, after the balto debacle.)
hey "bigbluefan" dont tell me that "eli" is not the most overpayed qb in the league.. deep down u know he sucks and he will prove it this year!!!
and i dident know if u looked up"the genius" in the dictionary u would see "a**hole"
If She-Li can win a Superbowl then anyone can!!!
Wow must be some education at Eastern Illinois. It only took him 3 years to try and figure this leadership thing out.
I love all the stats that support what a great QB Romo is. The fact of the matter is there are 53 players on a team but only one had the opportunity to fumble the snap in the playoff loss to Seattle. The same one that threw the game ending INT the next year against the Giants.
Oh, and the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in over 10 years. I would think that fact alone would make some of the more obnoxious Cowboy fans quiet for awhile but then again, I don't have a full understanding of the homosexual anger and mindset of Vox & Co.
Ninerfan4life,
Hey, take it easy on Romo and us Cowboys fans. We're not all blessed with the greatness of Shaun Hill and Alex Smith QB-ing our team, as you are. Indeed, the rest of us are envious. You shouldn't gloat.

What has Obama got to do with football? You are using the precise logic that you accuse Mr Florio of.
Unfortunately for you and the other neanderthals in this country, a fairly healthy majority of AMERICANS were sick and tired of watching his predecessor and the Republican party drive this nation into the ground, and the prospect of at least 4 more years of the same under his opponent were simply too much to stomach.
I log onto this site for football not politics, and I'm certainly not interested in yours. Please keep

Vox, QB rating means JACK.... Romo loses games at the end of the season because he stinks and does not even care - "its only football"....

To Tom Coughlin's Coat Holder:
We don't have to wait. The votes were counted in November 2008. Neanderthal Nation (which apparently includes you), LOST (and big time, I might add).
You lost because most of AMERICA has more than a 4th grade education, and can read and analyze the news for themselves, and think rationally, leaving them with not much of a choice but to support someone they may not have been entirely comfortable with, and are certainly not happy with all of his decisions so far (like me)

You guys seem to forget the roll call of clowns that stood behind center for the Cowboys before Romo. Watching them was a joke. QB after QB that couldn't finish a game with a 50% completion rating. Losing season after losing season. Last Playoff victory was 1996 for christ's sake. Romo may not have won a Playoff game yet, but is putting great stats and (brace yourself) 3 winning seasons on the board. This has been very rare for the Cowboys and is huge. If you hate the Cowboys then so be it, but you can't bash a QB after 2 2/3 seasons because he doesn't WOW you like John Elway. Oh, and Elway took his whole career to finally win a Super Bowl. In my book, he was one of the greatest of all time.
I love this time of year. When the Haters know their team is gonna suck and all they have left to do for the next 6 months is hate on the boys and especially Romo and Jerry. Face it, your season is over before it ever began. I have 6 plus months to revel in the glory of America's Team. Praaaaise Gawd!
Amen.
