Romo admits he needed to change

Our theory, to date, regarding Tony Romo is that he already has achieved far more than any undrafted slappy ever could have dreamed possible, and so he became complacent regarding his career as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys -- and smitten with the Hollywood lifestyle that goes along with it.  (As Taco Bill's latest item points out, that Hollywood lifestyle might get him smitten in different ways.)

In our view, Romo settled for a big-money contract that didn't fully reflect his market value because, even though the deal resided at the low end of the top-tier quarterback market, it represented far more money than Romo ever expected to pocket when he was trying to stay afloat on the bottom of the Dallas roster.

We also think that his "just happy to be here" mindset has kept him from becoming the kind of leader that his teammates need.  And it's obvious that he hasn't been a good leader; if he were, the Cowboys wouldn't have needed to cut receiver Terrell Owens in order to give Romo a chance to blossom.

A good leader would have found a way to manage Owens and any other narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole on the roster.  Though they don't get much worse than T.O., he's not the first narcissistic, passive-aggressive, malcontented asshole who has donned a football helmet.  (After all, I once wore one.)

But Romo apparently is changing.  Or, at a minimum, he's trying to change.

"Obviously the way I was before wasn't getting the job done to the extent to the goal you want to accomplish," Romo says, per the Associated Press.  "So you just keep going and keep going and hopefully you are able to accomplish that one day.  I can see improvement."

Romo also seems to admit that, indeed, he had grown too satisfied with his accomplishments in the NFL, and he wasn't pushing for more.

"Either you are trying to get better or you are content as a player," Romo said. "I am not content.  I don't think this team is.  We are striving to be a team that we hope can make everybody excited or have an exciting time watching us play this season."

It all sounds good on paper.  It remains to be seen whether Romo can pull it off.

The challenge will come from convincing the guys who have been part of the team that there's a new sheriff in town.  To truly make his case, Romo needs to be ready to get in the face and/or up the rear end of anyone who isn't fully on board with what the Cowboys are trying to accomplish.

I thought you were talking about the owner for a minute, I was going to challenge the statement on the grounds that Jerry Jones is not the least bit malcontented with the exception of the placement of his video screen.

As for the winner of the Gomer Pyle look alike contest, come back and talk after you actually won a playoff game, which might be another 10 years from now.

  15. russrpm says: August 27, 2009 4:56 PM

I agree that Romo should be a more agressive leader if this team is to go anywhere, but history tells us that it would have made no difference in the T.O. situation. Three teams, three quarterbacks thrown under the bus, and 3 locker rooms in turmoil. And, if they keep him past his traditional honeymoon season, Owens will tear the Bills up next.

  18. Daddy Mateo says: August 27, 2009 4:58 PM

I for one, am happy to hear this. I am a fan of Tony Romo and appreciate what he has done in Dallas. This is a guy that replaced Drew Bledsoe in 2006 while the team was falling fast and turned everything around. People LOVE to talk bad about him b/c of his late season struggles but the guy is still young in the starting role. Remember, it took Eli Manning 4 seasons until he won his first playoff game (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that he won the SB also that year), but then he was one and done the next year and got the LARGEST contract an NFL player has ever received. Give the guy a chance....

  19. The Genius says: August 27, 2009 4:58 PM

Romo is a total turnover machine. Probably the most over-rated quarterback in the NFL.
I seriously doubt he will ever win a playoff game.

  25. Scott22 says: August 27, 2009 5:06 PM

While I agree that Romo has been just happy to be there, I don't think we can blame Owens on him. No quaterback has been able to reel him in yet. (Good luck Trent Edwards.) As to his contract, we praise Tom Brady for signing a deal below market value to leave money to sign other players, let's not criticize Romo for not squeezing every penny out possible out of the Cowboys.

Compare his stats to Peyton, Brady, Eli, and any other QB as to what they did or where they were at by the same time in their careers. Oh brother, watch Romo have a good season and all you naysayers will be saying "I told you so".

The lack of success hasn't been all on the shoulders of one man, there is a whole team/coaching staff to blame as well.

Also, Florio, ya, that's the reason they got rid of TO-HA. They saw more in Roy. TO is a total idiot but he did/does not control any team. These so called superstars think they do but nay.

What a waste of space this story was.

  44. Barcid says: August 27, 2009 6:00 PM

Maybe people just got too carried away with how good the guy actually is.

I mean, he's been surrounded by top-shelf talent the entire time he's been there. Good line, good targets, good backs, good defense.

A lot of mediocre QBs would put up big numbers if they were surrounded with so many Pro Bowlers.

I'm not saying Romo's bad, just that he isn't as good as he's made out to be. Who catches Jason Campbell's passes? Who catches Eli Manning's passes? Or McNabb's?

QBs aside, the Cowboys have had the most talented offense in the NFC East, on paper at least, for several years now. No surprise that Romo puts up gaudy numbers.

  45. Roger the Dodger says: August 27, 2009 6:02 PM

Questions for the Romo-haters out there:

    1) Just exactly how could Romo have solved the loss of his starting LG, and the inadequate substitute that caused him to run for his life half the season?

    2) How could Romo have done any more with a broken finger, than he did?

    3) How could Romo have done anything from rehab (thanks to the inadequate LG substitute) to dial back the age meter on geriatric Brad Johnson?

    4) How could Romo have prevented T.O. from dropping every 4th ball that came his way?

    5) How could Romo have stopped two long runs by BAL when he doesn't play defense?

    6) How could Romo have prevented the special teams from sucking so badly?

    7) How could Romo have made the running game more effective, given the loss of the LG and the two top RB's?

    8) How could Romo have overcome the opposing defenses, knowing that the Cowboys had a weak running game, overplaying the pass?

A lot of people blame the collapse last year, the turnovers, the poor running game, the inevitable T.O. explosion, on Romo. Freaking ridiculous. Do these people know ANYTHING about the game of football? It's a team sport... win or lose.

You lost because most of AMERICA has more than a 4th grade education, and can read and analyze the news for themselves, and think rationally, leaving them with not much of a choice but to support someone they may not have been entirely comfortable with, and are certainly not happy with all of his decisions so far (like me)

But I digress; I will say again that I log onto this site for FOOTBALL, not politics.

Please keep your uneducated, idiotic political opinions and social commentary to yourself, or log onto a site where it's OK to get down and dirty about politics...............

You guys seem to forget the roll call of clowns that stood behind center for the Cowboys before Romo. Watching them was a joke. QB after QB that couldn't finish a game with a 50% completion rating. Losing season after losing season. Last Playoff victory was 1996 for christ's sake. Romo may not have won a Playoff game yet, but is putting great stats and (brace yourself) 3 winning seasons on the board. This has been very rare for the Cowboys and is huge. If you hate the Cowboys then so be it, but you can't bash a QB after 2 2/3 seasons because he doesn't WOW you like John Elway. Oh, and Elway took his whole career to finally win a Super Bowl. In my book, he was one of the greatest of all time.

I love this time of year. When the Haters know their team is gonna suck and all they have left to do for the next 6 months is hate on the boys and especially Romo and Jerry. Face it, your season is over before it ever began. I have 6 plus months to revel in the glory of America's Team. Praaaaise Gawd!

    Amen.

Perfectly stated from someone who actually watches the games and doesn't just check fantasy stats at the end of the game.
