Roger the Dodger = Idiot #2
2) It's 3rd and long, and the QB can't find an open receiver, so he hurls it at the video board in order to get a do-over.
Rebuttal: Oh, yeah. That'll happen. First, he's got to fling the ball 30 yards UP. Human anatomy has a little problem with that, but it probably can be done. Second, he's got to make sure he hits something, which means probably more like 40 yards UP. And if he doesn't, here comes a wounded duck down toward the field where a hungry defense awaits the receiver going for the ball. Yeah, that'll happen
How does human anatony have a problem with throwing the ball 30 yards in the air???????are you really this stupid. This would be easy to do.
Hitting something that size at 40 yards is a piece of cake! Plus if it is 3rd and long (in your arguement) and the QB misses, it will not be a wounded duck. If the other team is stupid enough to actually catch it.....it would still be good as a punt........

SensibleOne = absolute f-ing moron.
The point isn't if the punter will hit the scoreboard or not........the point is 1)how easily the scoreboard can be used as a tool to gain an advantage and 2) the impacts of that........
One doesn't sit back and see,.....gee, let's see what happens.......and, in this case, we have already seen what happens.......the issue isn't the scoreboard, it is the freakin' "Do OVER" rule. It opens up a whole can of worms.
The punter could punt around the scoreboard and that would be at least semi-fair because both punters in the game would have to do the same thing.
The board should be considered within the field of play, at least in the short-term just like the referees are.......
and again, to all you morons that are saying it would not be done in a real game....baloney......the scoreboard is 90 feet high, only 30 yards high.....do you know how easy it is to punt a ball 30 yards straight up in the air?.....pretty damn easy.
The only real options are 1) move the damn thing or 2) leave it and make it part of the field of play.....only options

All you haters out there are giving JJ exactly what he wants...publicity...Thank you!!!
Most of you haters think it's as easy as getting a crane out there and just move it up...well, as usual, you are so fast and easy to spew your hate that you make yourselves look like idiots. You have no idea what it would take to make that kind of an adjustment. If it costs 2mil it can't be an easy fix.
Goodell just wants to see what happens this season and if it needs to be moved it will be. The Cowboy's punter said it would be a non issue for him and ALL the good punters in the league because they use directional punting and the thing isn't as wide as the hashmarks on the field!! The only people who will hit it are the ones TRYING to hit it and that will only hurt their team by gassing THEM up and down the field, not the receiving team.

I can just picture it...
The League: Mr. Jones please, the Behemoth needs to be moved, it isn't fair.
Jerry Jones: NO! I don't wanna do that!
The League: Well, it's just that a team's entire season could be destroyed by that, that Monster!
Jerry Jones: Well I don't care! My team is underachieving so I have to help them in any way I possibly can...
The League: Very well Mr. Jones you can keep it there.
Jerry Jones: Yes! Yes! Woohoo!

Please address this question in post Mr. Florio.
They say if the ball hits the board, the whole thing is a "do over"
What if the ball hits the video board, but there was an offsides OR a roughing the punter during that "non-play"?
Also, if there is a "do over", and the next punt gets blocked, won't the punting team be really really pissed?

4th down and less than 5 with a defensive penalty for something like offsides will usually result in a 1st down for the kicking team. With this new rule, the defense will catch a break if the punt hits the scoreboard because the only penalties to be enforced are personal fouls. It will be 4th down again.
Unlike madmike who sees it as statistically unlikely to happen again, I'd say that since it's happened already, it's unlikely that it WON'T happen again.

By the way, I'm not an idiot Cowboys fan, I'm an idiot Vikings fan. And I think the NFL should pay to move the stadium. However, this isn't the end of the world as most seem to think.
The average punter punts a little over 3 times a game over a season (I picked Hunter Smith's 2008 stats). So that makes maybe 6 to 7 punts in a single game. There will be 8 home games played this year.
So all of this uproar is over a total of maybe 50 to 55 punts that would be subject to this rule. Now, I can gaurantee you that the Cowboys punter will never hit the damn thing (or face a Jerry Jones firing squad).
So realistically, 25ish punts would possibly be impacted by this rule. What are the odds, situationally, that any of those 25 punts might be positioned so that the punter would be forced to punt high, in the middle of the field as opposed to angling towards the sidelines? I'd say a small percentage, but what the hell, I'll give you a full 1/4 of those punts.
So, now we are talking about 6 punts that situationally are at risk of hitting the board all season. So now you finally have to factor two things, A) the odds that the punters punting those 6 punts are among those who have the best legs and can hit the damn thing and B) that they are unlucky enough to hit the damn thing on ANY of those 6 punts.
The statistical probability of it happening is extremely small.
Yes it happened in a pre-season game already, but the Titans punter was practicing hitting it in warmups, and Jeff Fischer had an interest in hitting it. If it gets hit in the pre-season, he bails out the NFL by forcing the competition committee to address the rule, prior to it embarrassing the league in a reg season game and they don't have a rule for it.
Bottom line, it's not happening in the regular season, and it sure as hell aint happening twice. Overblown story is overblown.

unamed source? get real lol.......
this isnt nothing but jealousy of Americas Team & its funny to watch the haters squirm like maggets over everything in Dallas. how can Jerry or the Dallas Cowboys be at fault for following the rules of the NFL? seriously....
find something else to whine about bcuz everyone knows the ignorant rookie was trying to hit the scoreboard & if that punt wouldnt have hit the scoreboard then it would have went 20 yards at the most.
i dont see it being a problem when games count bcuz no one punts straight up & most kicks are directional to make the field smaller. if this was such a huge problem then why wasnt it addressed 2 years ago when it was approved? the NFL would also recieve millions in law suits bcuz people who bought tickets/luxary suites for the up close game experience wouldnt get what they paid for. so this is deeper then Jerry getting his way or the Dallas Cowboys so find something else to whine about...
this is for the fans of Dallas & it wasnt meant to make all the Cowboy haters happy.
i cant wait to watch the Cowboys in there new Stadium & i really cant wait for some ignorant punter to try & hit it so he can face the gunners on the plane ride home! DO OVER!

Seems illogical to hold Jones accountable if he went above the league specs on the designs, and he had the designs approved by the league. It may seem like a big deal now, but I'm sure that when you're planning a 1.5 billion dollar stadium, you run with the league guidelines on the "small" stuff."
As I envision it, the League should foot the bill for raising the boards. Jones is in the right on that issue. However, I figure the league is just going to let it ride until the Cowboys are hurt by the situation and let Jones foot the bill himself. Undoubtedly, he'll swallow his pride if/when the situation affects his team.
While Jones may be being stubborn about the issue, I have to agree with the previous post. If I'd shelled out 800+ million of my own money and followed your specs, I don't think I'd be jumping right up to make additional changes once your specs were found to be faulty.

Roger the dodger says, "Tell the punter NOT to kick the ball that high in the center of the field."
...umm isn't that completely altering the play of the game?? if punters now have to avoid the board that completely changes how they punt the ball...
so if dallas decided to put a brick wall in the middle of the field, at the 50 yard line, are u just gonna be like "just tell the players to climb over it or go around it, the responsibility is on them"
no the responsibility is on the designers of the stadium and the NFL to NOT put obstructions to playing the game in the F'ing stadium

SensibleOne:
When trying to pin someone inside the 20, punters do try to kick the ball more straight up so the gunners can get down field and down the ball inside the 20. This is a very common practice. This is when the scoreboard will come into play. And I hope it screws the Cowboys every week.
And I doubt many teams want to try a FG when the ball is on the 45 yard line.

golongboyee = idiot.
I never said they couldn't hit it, I say wait till a punter NORMALLY punts it and it hits the scoreboard.
I am not a Cowboys fan, I just think there are alot of people getting their panties in a bunch over an event that happened in a pre-season game. Let it happen in the regular season, before you start making up all kinds if rediculous circumstances on how if will affect the game.
If a punter inentionaly kicks it 90 ft in the air, then the kicking team should be on the field kicking a field goal, since the only reason to kick it that high is to have huge hangtime for a punt to travel 35 yards

There were at least three totally specious arguments here that I would like to address:
1) It's an old, outdated rule.
Rebuttal: So is the one giving 6 points for a touchdown. Should they change that one, too? Should teams plan for more points, just because the 6 point rule is "old"? If it's on the books, it isn't "old" - it's "current" and "valid". Nuff said.
Yeah, that'll happen.
3) The gunners will be gassed.
Rebuttal: Tell the punter NOT to kick the ball that high in the center of the field. Angle it toward the sides, or kick a lower trajectory. Hitting the board is no one's fault EXCEPT the punter's (and whoever might have told him to do so). Doctor, it hurts when I do this; then don't do that.
That said, I, like others would like to see the board raised, if for no other reason than to remove one more reason for Florio and the other Cowboy haters to go thermonuclear.
