Lions Pettigrew to get first action; Culpepper starting

Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew, the 20th overall pick in the 2009 draft, will see his first game action of the preseason Saturday after missing the first two games due to a thigh injury.

The 6’6″, 260-pounder from Oklahoma State figures to eventually become the security blanket for quarterback Matthew Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick.  But, as MLive’s Tom Kowalski points out, Stafford’s elevation might not be imminent.

Daunte Culpepper gets the start in this Saturday’s preseason game against the Colts.

According to Kowalski, “[Lions head coach Jim Schwartz] was quick to caution that this does not mean that Culpepper will be the starter on opening day.”

Schwartz also left open the possibility of Stafford starting the preseason finale in Buffalo, according to Kowalski, who added that “Schwartz repeated his claim that the Lions might pick a starter but might not announce it publicly until shortly before the regular season opener on Sept. 13.”

That use of the word “claim,” coupled with Kowalski’s tweet in which he dismissed Schwartz’s claim that Culpepper starting this week means nothing by adding “whatever” shows that one of the sharpest beat writers on the Lions believes it’s Culpepper’s job out of the gates.

    “one of the sharpest beat writers on the Lions” Killer getting his props!
    Another sharp writer that covers the Lions can be found on http://www.lionsgab.com
    Let’s call him A. Kuehn, or better yet Anthony K.

    If I was the lions, I’d put some kinda annoying “mothership” up in my stadium and lower it to 85 feet ONLY when the other team is punting. Then raise it up when my team is punting. That would send quite a message, wear out the other teams punt coverage team repeatedly, as well as forcing them to punt line drives for a better return for my teams.

    That last paragraph is one of the most confounding sentences written in PFT history. I’m just amazed it wasn’t Florio.

    Culpepper = 4 wins
    Stafford = 2 wins…
    difference between #1 or #2 overall pick in the draft…
    does anyone REALLY care??

    That last paragraph gave George Will a headache.
    I’d like to see Yoda Florio edit it.

    I don’t play fantasy football, but maybe Daunte Culpepper would be a good sleeper pick as a backup quarterback?
    He’ll be throwing it to Calvin Johnson.
    You could have Mike Florio start at quarterback and Johnson would still catch 7 – 10 TDs.

    Well……..being a lion it only makes sense that Pettigrew will suck and that no one cares.

    “…one of the sharpest beat writers on the Lions.”
    Clearly, you don’t know Tom Kowalski. If he were a knife, tomatoes would not be scared.
    He’s a joke, not a reporter and CERTAINLY not an ‘insider’ as he claims.
    If you want to track a ‘sharp’ beat writer for the Leos, start reading Nick Cotsonika’s blog and articles on the Detroit Free Press site, freep.com.
    ‘Killer Kowalski’ reads this first thing when he gets out of bed at 10:00am and then writes his version, has a kielbasa sandwich, takes a nap, and heads out to Allen Park at the close of practice, chatting Nick up for what happened that day.

    Well now I know Stafford will start against the Saints.
    I read the Detroit Free Press everyday, and the Lions have no good beat writers. In fact, they’re worse than the team is.
