Nicks explodes for Giants

As the New York Giants search for their next No. 1 wideout given the absence of receiver Plaxico Burress, their first-round draft pick is making a case for fitting into Plax’s shoes.

(Not the ones Plax was wearing the night he shot himself in the leg.)

Receiver Hakeem Nicks caught six passes for 144 yards on Saturday night against the Jets.  Two of the catches resulted in touchdowns — one for 22 yards and one for 71.

Most of the damage came against potential future members of the UFL’s New York Sentinels, but the quick development of Nicks is encouraging.

The problem is that Nicks hasn’t gotten a ton of work with the first team, which has kept him buried on a depth chart capped by Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, and Mario Manningham.

The fact that Hixon, Smith, and Manningham are the top three options tells us that, in due time, Nicks won’t be spending much time standing on the sidelines.

Thanks for clearing up that whole “shoes” thing, Florio. I’m sure everyone here would have been totally lost without that clarification.

Annoying A** comment… Florio, you’ll try to twist any words just to sound funny or clever…
I wake up every morning hoping to read some real news by someone else besides you…

I haven’t seen the highlights yet but I’m not going to be quick to anoint Nicks. If he got 71 of those 144 yards in one shot then it could have just been a blown coverage, especially in a defense as complex as what Ryan runs.

The question isn’t can Nicks fill Plaxs shoes, it’s can Nicks fill Plaxs sweat pants in a night club? That’s the real question all giants fans are wondering

Especially since a throw went right through Hixon’s hands for an INT. Manningham dropped one that would have probably gone for a TD. Unfortunately, Hixon may get rushed into a starting spot if passes keep getting dropped. Last night was a classic example of why NY never should have went after Braylon Edwards. The Giants have enough guys that drop passes without bringing in one that wants $10 mill a year to leave the ball on the turf.

Nicks would have been a college star in a better program; unfortunately, UNC produces quality NFL players, they just never have a great college quarterback to manage the thing, or a great OC to call the plays. Willie Parker was unknown until he became a Steeler. Nicks was more well-known, but I guess the Bigtime Schools just didn’t want him. I think he’ll be an outstanding receiver in the NFL.

Nicks was not playing early in preseason because of A nagging hamstring which is no longer bothering him as was seen last night. But you’re right much of the damage last night was done against d-backs who won’t make the Jets, which also holds true for what Sanchez did against Giants wannabee DBs yesterday.

that touchdown he caught from david carr was a “money ball”catch.
it looks like a long year for the giant recievers.

Right..so thats the story of this game.
It wasnt the Jets beating the Giants up physically,
Its wasnt Bart Scott ripping the ball out of Brandon Jacobs hand without his helmet on.
It wasnt Mark Sanchez taking another huge step this time staringinto the face of that rush and making perfect throws to secure his and Rex Ryans first one and perhaps the beginning of something special.
It wasnt Chansi Stuckeys emergence with a TD and 68 yards including faking out 2 giants who had him trapped against the sideline with a two step.
Sanchez had three pro bowl giants on his chest while he was falling backwards and found stucky…You should watch the games before you comment ..dont just look at the stat sheet….
no Youre right its hakeem nicks blowing by drew colman and then torching james ihedibo on a busted coverage.

Florio is just showing where his loyalties lie. A glowing sycophantic piece on a jints rookie WR performance against 3rd stringers.

  12. madsqgrdn says: Aug 30, 2009 10:13 AM

That was what you took from this game …
It wasnt the jets out muscling the Giants for the first time in my memory..
It wasnt Sanchez throwing at TD with Tuck Kiwanuka and osi draped all over him..
It was Stucky leading the team in reciveing and faking out 3/4 s of the gmen secondary on his way to the endzone with a two step.
It wasnt Bart Scott ripping the ball out of Jacobs hands without a helmet..
no youre right its hakeem nicks torching drew coleman, and james ihedibo…oh by the way Nicks dropped the ball for the gmen as well..
watch the games dont just read the box score

hmmmm maybe nicks should start if the giants play against 2nd and third team defenses the entire season?

  14. Leviathan says: Aug 30, 2009 10:25 AM

I’m sure NFC East defenses won’t sleep all week in preparation for Hakeem Nicks.

  15. jkorn1818 says: Aug 30, 2009 10:53 AM

Nicks also dropped two wide open balls thrown to him by carr and manning.
What gave you the idea he might step in? Was it hixon’s drop on an easy pass that led to a pick? Or steve smith dropping a wide open 85 yard bomb. Not to mention Manningham’s wide open drop down the sideline.
Their WR’s had about 9 dropped passes yesterday. pathetic.

Can anyone tell me why msnbc is show casing this florio guy so much. his humor is lame and his topics seem unimportant, biased, unverified dribble. How about someone writes some actual journalism about sports. I feel like I am reading the “entertainment tonight” version of sports journalism. Florio is pushing perez hilton for his job. I am going to start going to other websites for my sports

The Jets dont exactly have a Steller Secondary, Esp when the Backups are on the field. Granted Nicks will be an explosive addition to the NYG Team. However Somone forgot to mention that He got all those yards when Eli was on the Bench….The Giants biggest worry isnt the WR…But can they catch Eli’s Lame duck passes that Plax could oh so well. I think Glory-hole…er Florio has a thing for the Giants…Check out the video he did on Vicks first game…The Whole time he is saying. “Well it was 4 for 4 but actually 2 for 2 because 2 were shovel passes and he only threw 1 deep pass and so it was really only 1 for 1 but anyway Mcnabb was upset because he lined up as receiver and then he wasn’t on the field..we can really see tension building on this team.”
I know he’s Anti-Vick but he does the same thing for other NFC-E teams.

Jets fans are funny. Sanchez is god because he played well against a Giants D missing 2 starting linebackers, 1 starting corner and a good portion of the rotation on the D-line.
Madsqrgrdn is even funnier “Bart Scott ripping the ball from jacobs” while Jacobs was being held up by three other jets. Nor were there 3 giants on Sanchez chest, in fact no one had a hand on him before the throw and it was a blown coverage allowing stuckey to get open. For someone bitching about not watching the game it makes one wonder what you were watching.

I love it when everyone gets all giddy with a preseason “win”. G-men have a lot of work to do and should go get a #1 WR. That said, Jets will be lucky to go 8-8. Giants 10-6 Eli takes them to the playoffs – again.
