Cassel will be ready for opener?

Chiefs coach Todd Haley wouldn’t talk about Matt Cassel’s MCL sprain Monday, but that didn’t stop news about his injury from leaking out.

While Yahoo! estimated that Cassel might miss 2-4 weeks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Monday evening on SportsCenter that Cassel would likely be ready to play in Week One at Baltimore.

Haley will be calling the offensive plays for that game after relieving offensive coordinator Chan Gailey of his duties Monday.  If Cassel were to miss the opener, it’s unclear if Tyler Thigpen or Brodie Croyle would start for the Chiefs.

The answer to that question might prove to be important if the Kansas City offensive line can’t do a better job of protecting the quarterback.  Cassel might start the game, but finishing against Baltimore is another matter.

After seeing the Ravens in person this weekend, he may want to rethink being ready.

Good news for KC if Schefter is right. Trust me, Cassel is much better than either Croyle or Thigpen. It’s not Cassel’s fault that the O Line sucks.

Cassel might want to limp dramatically until after the opener.

Ummhh, he might have been better off keeping Gailey so he had a scapegoat when the offense fails.
In Arizona he had a Pro Bowl QB, two Pro Bowl Wr’s and very good 3rd & 4th Wr’s.
In KC he’s got one good WR and not much else. It’s going to be a long season again in KC, but thankfully they’ve got Denver and Oakland in their division, it coulda been worse.
He should also be thankful he’ll be compared to some other rookie Head Coaches like Josh McDaniels and Raheem Morris who also exhibit the same “deer in the headlights” look.

Playing Denver and Oakland twice each isn’t going to help your Chiefs very much. Despite not being very good, the Raiders are still better than the Chiefs are right now, and I doubt the Chiefs will beat Denver more than once if at all. They might eek out one win during those four games. Two if they get lucky.
