Dwayne Jarrett continues to disappoint

Last week, I wrote about an annual training camp phenomenon:  the player who receives glowing praise during minicamp season, only to shrink when the hitting starts.

The subject of the post last time, Devin Thomas, rebounded from a rough month to catch three passes for 36 yards in Washington’s third preseason game.

The subject of this post — Panthers wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett — might not get on the field to rebound from anything.  The Rock Hill Herald writes that Jarrett is probably going to be inactive on game days this year.

Ouch.

Jarrett has reportedly been passed on the depth chart by Kenneth Moore, a 2008 fifth-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions that Carolina picked up during last season.  So basically Jarrett can’t beat out a winless team’s leftovers.  (Double ouch?)

On one level, the news shouldn’t be surprising because Jarrett has disappointed throughout his career.  A report surfaced recently that he was “not showing he can get open consistently.”  We’ve heard this before, regarding former USC receiver Mike Williams.

On the other hand, Jarrett and the players around him have talked him up all offseason as a breakout candidate that could possibly challenge Muhsin Muhammad for a starting job.

Like so much of what is said between May and August, Jarrett’s big words don’t amount to much now.

What’s the deal with USC, anyway?
    Bust U these days.
Jarrett, Leinart, Winston Justice, Frostee Rucker, Dominique Byrd, Mike Williams, Shaun Cody, Kenechi Udeze, Jacob Rogers, Keary Colbert, Will Poole?
And I didn’t even mention Reggie Bush, because he’s a decent player who fills a valuable role for the Saints, but certainly he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Gets off the line way too slow. Can’t figure it out, don’t know if he’s scared of getting jammed, or not strong enough to fight through it. But by the time he progresses into his route, the ball is already gone.

As Steve Smith stated last year, maybe if he read the playbook, he might actually contribute.

USC does occaisionall put out good players in the NFL but for the program to be who we think there, they are not. An overrated program in a weak Pac-10. Think about it, the biggest contract signed in the off season is a former Trojan…who didn’t even f*ckin play (Matt Cassel)! If that ain’t overrrated than we don ‘t know what is. Troy Polamalu is the best NFL player in the Pete carrol era & he was drafted in 2003. Tatupu, LB Seahawks is second Lendell White third & if he’s your third…hmm…sh*t.

It doesn’t make much sense for the Panthers to keep this guy on the roster and not activate him for games yet another season. It’s what, his third year? If he can’t get on the field, he’s officially now a bust. Rack him.
Get someone in there like Reggie Brown or Hank Baskett from the Eagles. It wouldn’t hurt for them to look at AJ Feeley while they’re at it.

Reading between the lines, Steve Smith actually said that if Jarrett doesn’t read his playbook he might get knocked out.

Toll Aikman sorry but smith lashed out at him saying he needed to stay away from the media and get his head in the playbook if he wanted to play…
As for Jarret the other downside is he isn’t a punt/kick returner either. The bright side of things is he is only 21-22 years old so he still has plenty of learning and time to develope…
The thing to think about with this guy and what im assuming the panthers are thinking is…Young recievers generally have a problem adapting and generally takes them 1-2 years to be aclimated. If he came out as a senior he’d only have 2 years in the NFL on his resume and this year would be his make it or break it year. I’ll admit him being taken in the 2nd round was a bad choice at this point and he’s starting to look like the other USC recievers who never became acclimated. Hopefully he can become acclimated sometime this year to prevent from becoming a total bust.
