Haley will call plays on offense

Chiefs coach Todd Haley talked a month ago about the difficult decision he made to forgo calling offensive plays in Kansas City.

Something clearly changed over that time, leading to Chan Gailey being relieved of his duties Monday as offensive coordinator.

It’s unclear if Gailey will remain with the organization or whether the coordinator position will be filled.  But Larry Johnson told 610 Radio in Kansas City Monday that Haley will be calling the plays for the Chiefs.

The approach is different than what Haley’s old boss Ken Whisenhunt did in Arizona, but ultimately it makes sense.  Haley’s offensive philosophies appear quite different than how Gailey has traditionally run an offense.

If keeping Gailey on board was only delaying an inevitable switch to Haley or one of “his guys,” then making a move now was the right decision.

Now we’ll see if Haley has to create a passing game in Week One without Matt Cassel.

  1. great move by Haley…Gailey was 2-14 and 0-3 this year calling plays, last game Haley called was Super Bowl, ” nuf said, ball in”

  2. this move makes sense. But the timing doesn’t. They should have done this sooner so the team had more time to get used to Haley’s play calling and whatnot before the season started. It takes time to get used to a new system, and this season was going to be tough for them anyway since they made so many changes…shoulda done this sooner…Clearly Haley shoulda been the one calling the plays offensively from day one, that’s his whole claim to fame…
    with that said, GO CHIEFS!!!
they’ll prolly suck this year tho :’-(
tho the AFC west could be pretty terrible this year, n KC mite be able to sneak in the playoffs even with a sub-par record…more likely tho that san diego cruises in…

  3. Yeah cause calling plays for warner, fitz and boldin is the same as thigpen, bowe and who??? This is a disaster.

  4. common sense bro…Haley can’t do any worse than Gailey and who cares about timing….get it right and he did

  5. Can the play calling actually get any worse than what we had for most of last year?
Half the season was run left, run right, screen, punt, and repeat.
A segment of the Chiefsnation created a term for that, “hermcuffed.”
The other half was never run and use shotgun and pistol the whole time.
that was prolly chan’s idea, it was at least creative and based on what we could actually do, if not predictable due to over use.

  6. with thig prob starting the 1st 2-3 weeks, it would make sense for gailey to call plays since he crafted a game plan special for him last year did thig did pretty good. gailey is very familiar w thig, haley’s not. maybe haley does not plan on having thig around then. but this is the chiefs, so common sense is nowhere to be found.

  7. Bad Idea, I don;t know a single coach that called plays and was successful. Camoron was terrible at it!

  8. dude nation, give Haley a chance. all he did was take AZ to the ‘Bowl. glass is half full boys, can’t be any worse than Herm and Carl show

  9. mike holmgren, jon gruden, and andy reid called thier own plays.
All three where decent to good head coaches.
and bill belichick also called plays for one year.
    it can be done.

  10. gooboy, Ken whisenhut called the plays in AZ. look it up. hayley should be better than chan but….with the talent on offense it’s gonna be tough.
