Haley will call plays on offense

Chiefs coach Todd Haley talked a month ago about the difficult decision he made to forgo calling offensive plays in Kansas City.

Something clearly changed over that time, leading to Chan Gailey being relieved of his duties Monday as offensive coordinator.

It’s unclear if Gailey will remain with the organization or whether the coordinator position will be filled. But Larry Johnson told 610 Radio in Kansas City Monday that Haley will be calling the plays for the Chiefs.

The approach is different than what Haley’s old boss Ken Whisenhunt did in Arizona, but ultimately it makes sense. Haley’s offensive philosophies appear quite different than how Gailey has traditionally run an offense.

If keeping Gailey on board was only delaying an inevitable switch to Haley or one of “his guys,” then making a move now was the right decision.

Now we’ll see if Haley has to create a passing game in Week One without Matt Cassel.
