Latest Favre jersey sells well, too

Maybe Brett Favre should wind his career down by spending time with every NFL franchise.

In a down economy, there’s nothing like slapping Favre’s name and number on a slab of fabric and waiting for the cash register to start smoking.

Darren Rovell points out that, for the period from April 1 through August 28, Favre’s new Vikings jersey was the top seller through NFLShop.com.

And that’s based on only ten days of availability during the five-month window.

Second on the list is Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, followed by Steelers safety Troy Polamalu.

At No. 4 is No. 7 of the Eagles, even though the name “Vick” was for most of the sales period regarded as an obscenity.

Last year, Favre’s then-new jersey with the New Jersey Jets rocketed to the top of the sales list.

The rest of the top 20 is right here.  Amazingly, Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes didn’t make the cut — and 49ers wideout Michael Crabtree somehow did.

Big name free agents and first round rookies are always near the top of the jersey sales list. Because they’re new.

Because people willing to shell out $250 or more for an authentic jersey are usually kind of stoopid.

Why is it a surprise that Holmes isn’t top 20? He’s not even the top of the depth chart on the Steelers.
+ Vick and Crabtree are brand new jerseys.

    Why?
One is a 1st round pick just signed at the start of that time period and was a very popular college player = lots of jersey sales
The other is a 3rd year player (so those who want his jersey already have it) whose major feat came two months prior to the time period, and who plays for a team who has a history of jettisoning potential star WR’s instead of signing them to big contracts…and just gave their star linebacker an extension. People would much rather own a #7, #43 or #92 jersey in Pittsburgh cause it won’t go out of date in 2 years

If “reality” television or pop music didn’t give you a cultural barometer of where things stand in today’s society, this should: an overrated, washed up drama queen, a whiny, underachieving ,unproven bitch and a dog drowning, sadistic felon are 3 of the top 4 selling jerseys out there.
    America is stupid.

  16. Hauschild says: Aug 31, 2009 2:23 PM

Wow – the Favre hate continues. Even though I’ve provided facts – on numerous occassions – that Favre hasn’t finished lower than #14 as an NFL QB, the hate-mongers refuse to acknowledge the truth.
Not only that, but Favre’s jerseys sell like mad – which indicates that he remains popular, and a “good” kind of popular. He doesn’t dance the “moral line” with trashy woman, doesn’t commit felonies and isn’t a loser dope fiend. Actually, why IS he popular these days? His clean and class act just doesn’t mesh with the average American?!?!?

  17. redsquare says: Aug 31, 2009 2:23 PM

Wearing jerseys is all about image, not substance. People who care about the real, unglamorous, meaningful substance of achievement don’t typically go around wearing flashy jerseys with other people’s names on them. Or are simply smaller in number than those who wear jerseys to somehow take on the patina of cool that an actual high-achiever’s name on their back can somehow offer them.
It’s the same thing as not many people going around with huge car stereos blasting Bach, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, or John Coltrane. You know what gets blasted, and we know why–the illusionary transfer of coolness from achievers (which is a marketing-based illusion in itself) to non-achievers.

Tell that to his Green Bay Skanks, the vicodin he pulled out of his own vomit and reinjested, and accepting narcotics from a teammate with out it being your prescription was a class C felony last time I checked. But he got a pass, because of who he was at the time. And because of the enabling and fan love, Green Bay Fans created the EGO that used to be Brett.

Minnesota is one of the top 2 NFL teams as far as homerism goes.
Why is it surprising that Brett Favre is number one?
Hell, if the Vikings had just acquired Bruce Gradkowski to be their starting QB, the jersey probably would have landed in the top 10.
