Texans quarterback Matt Schaub has the type of “rate stats” like completion percentage and yards-per-attempt that rivals the best in the league.
His problem has been staying on the field, unlike his counterpart Brett Favre in Monday’s preseason game.
Schaub hurt his ankle while scrambling Monday night, but he stayed on the field during the drive as the Texans scored their first touchdown of the game late in the first half. It didn’t look great when Schaub limped off the field after the score, but he returned to the game for Houston’s next drive after getting the knee worked on by the trainer.
Perhaps this will be the start of a season where Schaub quiets the whispers that he’s not tough enough to lead the Texans.
UPDATE: The Texans’ official Twitter feed announced that Schaub won’t play in the second half, but that he’s “fine.”
SECOND UPDATE: While the move may have been precautionary, Schaub was originally scheduled to play three quarters.
I love these space filling stories. Do you guys have a quota? It only took a few minutes for the entire viewing audience to understand that Schaub’s injury wasn’t serious when he came back onto the field to play. Why is this even a story?
I see they edited the headline after my comment. Slick move.
Funny – Favre puts up a buck-twenty QB rating and suddenly Mikey F’s at a loss for a headline….
Alas, vindication is a helluva thing.
Uh – where’s all this “talent” on offense the Vikings supposedly possess? Their pass protection is abysmal and their receivers appear to be of tier-3+ ability.
Looks like Brett’s gonna REALLY need to be relied upon again because what happens when a team’s well consists of Petersen running the ball and bail-out screen passes on offense??? Seems like a recipe for a dry well.
How about a story on Favre’s personal foul penalty. Yeah, he committed it, not against him.
A buck-twenty QB rating with 80% of his completions as dump offs to their great RB’s. Don’t read too far into this, Favre looks old out there. Lots of wincing. I am going to hate to see him come about week 10 with the season pounding on him. This performance means nothing, he didn’t look spectacular.
As a matter of fact, Tarvaris Jackson has looked instantly better since he’s been in. Don’t fool yourself with Favre. Aside from Favre’s numbers, have you seen a major upgrade in the team like some people were screaming? I haven’t. He did what the other two QB’s would have done. Efficiently moved the team with their great RB’s and nothing to “wow” about. Pedestrian performance.
Also, I don’t see dinking and dunking all night as anything to write home about. How is that different than the Viking’s offense from the past 4 years?
Once again, don’t look at numbers, compare it to how the team was before. This looks like the same Vikings team to me. The only difference is a soon-to-be 40-year old QB that isn’t as much of an upgrade as people think. Just watch the season unfold to see what I mean. Oh, and be ready for some jeers when he starts throwing his signature picks.
I thought teams couldn’t use twitter during a game? or did i misunderstand?
Very few QB’s are willing to be tough like Brett Favre.
Schaub looks wimpish but not nearly as bad as Tony Romo for refusing to play with a cracked pinky.
Amazing analysis junkie, we’re all very impressed. Generally teams don’t show their entire playbook during preseason games though. If you honestly think they brought Favre in there to dump off all season, you’ve lost your mind. If anything, Favre checking down is a great sign for the Vikings. Much better than those signature picks you’re so giddy about.
Bob, when was the last time you tried to throw a football with a broken pinkie…?
Of course if Favre would have exited the game this site would have said something like “Favre has another excuse if he plays poorly- a supposedly bad ankle.”
Overall this is a good site, but the pathological hatred and denigration of Favre is quite juvenile and lacks any professionalism. And the best part is- Favre likely does not even know this site exists, but he is a large part of this site.
