The Jacksonville Jaguars were criticized in some circles last month for snagging cornerback Don Carey from the Browns.
Carey, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft, was “waived/injured” by the Browns due to a shoulder injury that likely was going to keep him from playing this year.
If Carey had passed through waivers, he would have gone to Cleveland’s injured reserve list.
But the Jaguars claimed Carey on waivers.
Frankly, it was a mess the Browns created for themselves.
Before the first roster cuts, non-vested veterans (players with less than four years of service) can’t be automatically shipped to injured reserve. The goal is to prevent the stashing of young players.
A team that doesn’t want to expose a young player to waivers must wait until the first slicing of the roster from 80 to 75, at which time a non-vested veteran can be moved straight to injured reserve. It requires the team to use one less total body in practice and preseason games, but it keeps the young player from being exposed to waivers.
The Browns could have avoided the situation simply by carrying Carey on the roster until making the first set of cuts, at which time he could have been shifted to IR without being exposed to waivers.
That’s precisely what the Jags did, using a spot on a guy who couldn’t practice due to injury and then moving him to injured reserve as of today.
The Jaguars trimmed four others from the roster by waiving tight end Tyler Lorenzen, defensive tackle Jervonte Jackson, receiver Clarence Denmark, and receiver Maurice Dupree.
Lorenzen played quarterback at Connecticut, and he moved to tight end in an effort to make it in the NFL. (And, amazingly, the Jags gave him a chance despite their last experience with a converted college quarterback.)
WOW! Florio just wasted 1 min of my life I will never get back. A article on Don Carey, a sixth round player that was never going to see the field in the first place. Does Florios hate for Cleveland ever end?
Jacksonville 7
Cleveland 0
We smart
Florio just wasted 1 min of my life I will never get back

That saying has been retired….please pass it on.
What circles would criticize the Jaguars because the Browns are stupid?
Is there any limit on how many players they can do this with? Just wondering.

I am new to this site. I will make note.
Basically the Jags picked up an extra 6th round pick this year for nothing. It was a shrewd move by the GM (Smith).

The title of the article had Don Carey’s name in it. If you don’t care, don’t read it. Plain and simple.

I also love how even newcomers refer to him as “Florio,” as if they were college dormmates or something.
Attention everyone: the ripping of Mike Florio in EVERY post he makes gets stale unless you make it remotely witty and entertaining.
Florio,
You try to be so cute with your commentary but you really end up just sounding like a teenage girl. The Jags not only gave Lorenzen a chance to play TE after being a QB in college but they drafted a TE in the 6th round who was a college QB; Zach Miller. And he is a stud. And by the way, it was Matt Jones’ performance off the field that never matured, not his on field performance. The guy caught 66 balls in only 10 starts in 2008.
Ever hear of Zach Miller? The Jags drafted this former college QB to be a tight end and he will be a good one. Comparing Lorenzen to Matt Jones is mighty small of you MF considering the circumstances of Jones’ departure.

The fact that Don Carey’s name was in the title has nothing to do with the issue the article was worthless. FLORIO wrote an article on a 6th rounder nobody outside of Cleveland heard of. I read it and have the right to comment on it. Are you his buddy? Defending this crap about a 6th round pick that has no meaning what so ever other than showing FLORIOS hate for the Browns.
Florio is just adhering to Leaguethink.
EVERYBODY hates the stinkin Browns
