Sal Paolantonio of ESPN has, within the past 30 minutes or so, provided some compelling analysis of the situation in Philadelphia regarding the use of Mike Vick in the team's offense.
Paolantonio addressed the various confusions and inconsistencies surrounding Vick's role, from Donovan McNabb's dismissive use of the term "gimmick" on Monday to the element of surprise that comes from using the Wildcat offense with the personnel grouping that already is on the field to the Kordell Stewart-style approach the Eagles will actually be using when bringing in Vick to the team's desire to make Vick into a full-time quarterback to Vick's recent vow that he plans to be a full-time quarterback again, soon.
It makes us wonder what precisely the team's ultimate plan is for Vick.
Though there's a chance they don't have a plan, we'll assume that this billion-dollar company regards the most important position on the field a bit more seriously than that.
If the goal is to get the most out of Vick this year, then the focus should be getting him onto the field as a slot receiver, so that his periodic use as a quarterback will bring with it the "oh sh-t" factor as the opposing defense realizes that Vick has lined up to take the snap.
And that approach would mean not spending so much time remaking him into an every-down NFL quarterback, devoting some reps to teaching him how to run patterns and catch footballs.
So if the team is more committed to making Vick into an every-down NFL quarterback than it is to getting the biggest bang for their bucks, why are they doing it?
Obviously, if McNabb suffers a multi-game injury, having Vick ready to go will make the Eagles look like geniuses in hindsight. But why would they invite the distraction and disruption associated with signing Vick for the primary purpose of upgrading the No. 2 quarterback?
And if the goal is to buy low and sell high, flipping Vick via trade in March, is the package of picks they'd get in 2010 justified by the short-term head-scratching and hand-wringing that Vick's presence has created?
Bottom line? We think the Eagles wanted Vick so that they could spend the 2009 season assessing whether it makes sense come 2010 to make him the starting quarterback, and to dump Donovan McNabb. That outcome -- Vick as a multi-year starting quarterback -- is the only scenario that ultimately validates the stresses and strains that the team will experience in 2009.
It doesn't mean that Vick will supplant McNabb come 2010. But if the powers-that-be decide that Vick can play at a high level and if the powers-that-be decide that the window has closed on Donovan (who'll be 33 before the current season ends), the transition to new quarterback won't be nearly as dramatic if Vick already has been groomed to step in.
Some might regard the notion as blasphemy. But Andy Reid surely didn't burn the 36th overall pick in the 2007 draft on Kevin Kolb because Reid thought that McNabb deserved a backup who was only four picks removed from being a first-round selection. Reid and the Eagles have been looking for the next McNabb for more than two years, and the biggest thing they need to figure out in 2009 is whether Vick is that guy.
Along the way, they need to be sure that McNabb doesn't figure out that this is the real reason why they brought Vick to town.

Distractions are overrated. They brought in Vick to evaluate all of the above (buy low-sell high, mcnabb replacement, slash-style qb). Philly will still have a great year because they have a solid team loaded with talent unlike the team with punt blocking TV.

-- The only distraction that has been created, is by the media. The Eagles made a BUSINESS decision. They HAVE to drop SOMEONE to sign on Vick. That SOMEONE will be A.J. Feeley, unfortunately... not Kolb. Why not sign Vick? I was fire-coming-out-of-my-ears ANGRY when I heard the news about the signing. That anger lasted about 3 minutes until I realized, yes, he tortured dogs, yes, he's a scumbag - BUT, the Eagles signed him for business...BUSINESS. He is lethal to defenses, not to mention having another athletic QB on the field at the same time plus Westbrook and Jackson.

About a week to ten days ahead of everyone else. I said pretty much the same thing a week or two ago, only I don't have the Eagirls replacing McNabb with Vick next year.
Florio is dead right on this one, boys. I can't believe people have waited this long to talk about it. Of course the Eagles took on Vick in the hopes he will become the starter. Nothing else makes sense. Next season? Maybe. Or possibly by the end of this season, depending on how things unfold. And McNabb can feel it.

Eagles fans love to call out, say, Dallas for not winning a playoff game in many years, but what do the Eagles have to show for all of their recent playoff "success"?
A loss in the Super Bowl, and a string of losses in conference championships. Does anyone really think that any other NFC team would have lost after getting to that point so many times? History doesn't back it up.
Sure, the other NFC East teams haven't won the big game in a while (the fantastic Giants win over the Pats excluded), but they are all certified Super Bowl champs, across multiple decades. As are the Steelers. "Playoff wins" only becomes criteria for greatness when that's all your team has to show for itself.
So until the Eagles get their Super Bowl winner rings, they should probably be looking for alliances with, say, the Bills.
But that might insult the Bills, who've been to more Super Bowls than the Eagles. Falcons, maybe? No, that wouldn't work so well these days. Hmm, Vikings? No, they've been to more Super Bowls than the Eagles too.

The Steelers are no threat to my Eagles, except the few times we play in the regular season. Not even the same conference. I'm not a fan, but I don't dislike them.
But, I guess you're right - that's bad logic, because the Cowboys don't really threaten my team, either, yet I hate them with the passion of a thousand suns.

If Donovan is SO superior, as you like to delude yourself that he is, why could Eli handle the Pats and Donnie could not? Harsh realities are hard to face but history proves in the biggest games McNabb can't get it done and Donovan's 3 INTs took away Philly's best chance at a Super Bowl win.

I remember that game well. Being an objective fan, I can acknowledge Pittsburgh was the better team that day and all last year.

Eskinsux, I'm actually a fan of all the teams in the NFC East (including the Eagles, up until they signed Vick, and will be again after they cut him and Reid). I'm more of a Cowboys fan than anything else--I follow them every year, a long-time (and often painful) habit begun when my family lived in Texas when I was born--but I enjoy a lot of teams. More than anything, I enjoy the sport.
That is, I'm not one of these mouth-breathing dopes who wraps so much of their own self-identity in with one team that I refer to them as "we" and other teams as "you" and actually hate other teams and players just because they're not my team. There's fun "love to hate", and there's the ugly kind we see all over the place today.
I've liked the Eagles plenty over the years. I loved watching Jaws & co. when I was a kid. I rooted for McNabb & TO against the favored Pats.
My post wasn't even about the Eagles, but just a reality check against trash-talking fans. Though I will be no fan of the Eagles so long as they have Vick.

It's all they have. Nothing says 'pride' more than boasting about a 1-4 record in the NFCCG, but 'at least they made it that far'
Beating the Giants last year was their annual Super Bowl. Their trophy case is full of origami. You know....pieces of PAPER folded into the shape of stuff. In this case, all of them resemble the Lombardi Trophy. A single spark in the vicinity could wipe out their entire history.
