So why did the Cincinnati Bengals add a per-game weight clause in the contract signed by tackle Andre Smith?
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Smith showed up at 364 pounds.
That’s 34 pounds above Smith’s playing weight.
The Bengals opted to make Smith the sixth overall pick when a surprise pre-draft weigh-in showed that he was only (only?) at 337. There were rumors earlier this year that he weighed as much as 380.
Schefter says that Smith’s scale-tipping at 364 prompted the team to insist on a weight clause, which as we reported yesterday de-escalates his base salary by 50 percent for each game in which he weighs 350 pounds or more and is not active.
Schefter also reports that the foot bone that fractured while bearing that weight will keep Smith out for four weeks.
Per Schefter, Smith already is down to a svelte 358.
Cheeseburger… Cheeseburger… Cheeseburger…
Put your shoes back on Florio…it’s 14 pounds not 34….
Well heres what the bengals should do start him asap so that defensive ends burn him repeatedly for sacks so the heat can help him lose weight. ……Or put a statement in his contract saying NO SACKS MEANS MO SNACKS!!!
Did they put a clause in there for him NOT running with his shirt off?? We can only hope so….
I was watching a short clip of him practicing on the NFL Network yesterday and I was shocked at how weak looking he is. His arms had no definition, no bulk what so ever. This guy is a definite bust. Seems like his only goal was to make the millions on his signing bonus and then fade into obscurity. He is guaranteed to be one of the many NFL players that will be broke within 5 years of leaving the League.
I don’t understand the Bengals. They already have a bunch of high risk/low reward players. Why would they draft another? I guess they will remain in the basement of the AFC North.
He went with Brandon Marshall to Mc Donalds all off season.
actually it is 34 lbs over… its 34 lbs over his playing weight… not 34 lbs over his contract clause… that is the 14. The contract does not represent his playing weight… it represents his max weight.
Vdogg, I think his playing weight is 330, not 350, so yes he would be 34 pounds above his playing weight.
CANDY BAR!
It was a wage linked to weight clause that had Pat and Kevin Williams scrambling for the quick water loss pills that ended up getting them into their league & legal trouble. It was also the quick weight loss pills (ephedrine) that were thought to have contributed heavily to Corey Stringer’s death in training camp a few years ago.
With the league so interested in the health and safety of its player (or so we are told) I wonder why they continue to allow those kind of additions to contracts?
stupid fat shit….
great signing bungels!!!!

It’s 14 pounds above the maximum weight in his contract however his playing weight is 330 lbs.
I guess Mike Brown doesn’t need to send him a gross of Krispy Kreme in order to get him above three and a half bills.
He’s going to be saving a lot of money this year if Smith is unable to play or practice, as I doubt he’ll lose 15+ pounds by sitting on his ass.
I agree with Stone. Smith screams “bust,” and Cincy should’ve known that when they drafted him. As a Bengals fan, I’m disappointed but not surprised, as usual.
Seriously, Mike Brown, this is the guy you wanted to help protect Carson Palmer (aka the center of your franchise)?
Yea he is a joke
I wasn’t happy the Bengals drafted this kid but its way too soon to call him a bust. Fact is he played at Alabama in the SEC and dominated every season he played. No question he was a fine college tackle. The question is does he have the mental toughness to control his bad habits as well as dedication to become a top OT in the NFL?
With the contract the Bengals got him to sign, they have hedged their bets, so obviously they are wondering too.
Four weeks? La Canfora on NFL.com and NFL Network said 7-10 days. You posted that yesterday.
They should write in a “leave your shirt on” clause.
He could be the biggest double bust ever… contract AND girt.
Andre Smith is like Casey Hampton. You can’t expect the guy to show up in shape, you have to bust his arse and get him into shape.
It will take until week 5 probably to get him into playing shape because of the holdout and the contract, but once he is in playing shape, like Hampton he will dominate.
Next season, he’ll probably show up out of shape to training camp, but after the preseason is over he’ll be in shape for the regular season. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is what it is.
This guy has one leg that weighs 364. I’m certain that this “reporting” weight was fabricated.
The images of this guy running the 40 with his shirt off still give me nightmares. The retinas were nearly burned from my eyes from just glancing at that video. He looked like a black Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers movies.
This pile of flab has NFL bust stenciled across his forehead.
The weight definitely sets off alarm bells, however there is more than strength involved with playing OT in the NFL. I wouldn’t say he is a bust until he gets on the field as I believe he was the most talented lineman coming out this year.
I know there are some ticked off Bengal fans!
This guys sits out this long, barely practices for one day – comes in the next day and breaks his foot!
He might as well payback his funds and leave town, he will never be able to redeem himself from that!
Crabtree – you paying attention!? lol!!!!!!
“GET IN MY BELLY!”
Is this apart of the new Obama Cap and Trade tax?
Can the Bengals do the rest of the world a favor and tie the other 50% of his contract to a clause that says he will never run again without a baggy shirt on?
Hey Otis Taylor 89
Have you been watching the preseason? The best o-lineman drafted was michael oher, that kid is a beast.
I think he was at wine festival stomping grapes..Or lost his balance trying to get his shirt over his 44DDD’s
So…….He’s gonna miss 4 weeks.Sitting on his ass?….Will the Bengals be getting one of those truck scales put in their training facility?….
Yeah, the 1st round holdout, potential bust, broken footed, man boobily having Smith is just like the perennial Pro Bowler, and multiple Super Bowl Champion Casey Hampton. Yeah. Only one problem. Smith is an offensive tackle that will be responsible for being fleet-footeed enough to block the leagues premier pass-rushers, and protect Palmer’s blind side. If he can’t move he can’t block. If Hampton can’t move, how do you expect somone else to move him??? Yeah Big Snack is a HO HO away from a heart attack, but he’s PLAYING and WINNING; 2 things Smith might not ever get to do.
All he needs to do is train…

Wow, a fan calling their first round lineman the best…homer maybe?
Sounds like he’s going to be intentionally dehydrating himself to get down to 350 for a weekly weight check followed by drinking lots of fluids so he can play at full speed. Not the ideal way to do things. He needs to get his normal weight down to 350.
In a few years, Smith will be mentioned alongside top 5 picks Tony Mandarich and Mike Williams (the OT, but if you make it top 10 picks, the WR can be included too).
If Mike Brown starts hurting for money he can always start leaving cheeseburgers laying around the practice field.
maybe being so fat that he broke his foot will make him say Hey Hey Hey, I’m to fat to Play!!
Bengals Suck and Marvin Lewis proves again that he’s best as an defensive coordinator leading the best lineback ever to play. How much money has secondary talent made off of Sugar Ray Lewis. Billick and his coaching tree definitely glad they got ray the the right lawyers! Staggering
when you saw those man tits bouncing around during the combine, everyone ( except Bungles) knew he would be a bust ( like that pun everyone ?)
Anyone heard from Kravon lately?
nice one Brenston
His rookie season hasn’t even started and he is being called a bust?
Being a bust takes longer than 0 games to prove.
All of you Andre Smith haters have never suited up in any meanignful football game in your lives. The guy is a stud. He has the best footwork of any linemen in this past year’s draft. He can shed weight quickly. He will be in the lineup in a few weeks and the Bengals will be better for it. Didn’t Tony Mandarich have a better body than Eric Williams? We will see but to call the guy a bust before he has played one down is stupid and shows most people that frequent this site are clueless about the game.
Maybe he can get with Nutrisystem, like all of the other FORMER NFL players.
Its funny every time a Bengal articles its 80% of Steelers that feel the need to comment….1. if you know football Smith will play in the NFL and will play a while once he is around the orga and players….2. we didnt expect to have Smith for Pittsburg and plan to and WILL kick Pitts azzz without Andre Smith….Get those weak corners you got ready to check Chad, Ocho AND HENRY(AKA Steeler Killer) and yeah you may get to palmer once or twice BUT IT DAMN suRE WONT BE LIKE LAST YEAR!
9-27-09 We gone see how many Steelers fans RETREAT to talking about PAST RINGS cause they got their ass kicked!!!!!!!! Remember its not what you already done BUT WHAT YOU WiLL DO IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!! We will see soon!
Bryancl
Quite the opposite, I was hoping the ravens would draft kenny britt this year. But watching oher play has changed my mind. The rest of the ravens draft hasn’t wowed me, but #74 has.
he was great player in college but DEs are way stronger & faster then college. i think he will be a great player in a couple years but they need to add a better guard on his side before he can really improve & he will need a year in the weight room. the guy had man tits the size of watermelons
i couldnt believe how fat the guy was when i saw him a couple weeks ago. i think 380 was giving the benifit of doubt, he looked more like 400 lbs.
He’s just another fatass loser………..Made it to the NFL, even if he’s a total bust, he has more money than most people can dream of…Besides the mental issues,…..If he had any drive to be the best he could be, he would have not shown up 34 pounds overweight, would not have shown up for pro day looking like a macy’s thanksgiving day parade blimp…..Yeah, great run blocker, steal of the draft….What a crock…How about having some pride in your work, ability, and being the best by working at it………..This fatass is a total bust……..
How do you fracture your foot sitting on a couch eating double-cheeseburgers?
At a paycheck about $400K per game, $4K for emergency pre-game liposuction will be a lot cheaper than showing up at over 350lbs.
Believe me, the deactivation clause will be ordered from the top level if it appears he will be over the limit.
