Favre won't play on Friday night

Though it’s unusual for starters to play in the final preseason game, everything about new Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has been unusual.

So it would be unusual for Favre to play in the Vikings’ preseason finale against the Vikings Cowboys, since it’s usual for the starters to not play.

In this specific instance, however, Favre will do the usual.  On Wednesday, coach Brad Childress said Favre won’t play.

I don’t see the upside,” Childress said, per the Associated Press.

We’re not sure we agree with that.  After all, a 39-year-old quarterback could always use some extra work on his illegal crackback blocking skills.

    Very true statement

You Florio are absolute proof that practice DOES NOT make perfect!
I have been around here for about 3 weeks now, you have proven your self time and time again to know absolutely nothing about football, you constantly write blogs giving your opinion but trying to make it sound as absolute fact and you have a HUGE mancrush on Brett Favre!
You have written hundreds of posts on the man, and in typical Florio fashion, you write absolutely NOTHING during the game of his performance (it was good, not great), but within minutes of his throwing an illegal block, you were here!
    Imagine that……..

  12. jrmbadger says: Sep 2, 2009 10:41 PM

Did he ever get fined for that hit?

  13. DocBG says: Sep 2, 2009 10:42 PM

Florio, did you start the weekend drinking and/or recreational drug use a little early? the vikings preseason finale isnt against the vikings, its against the cowboys. It may be intentional, but this looks like it was written by a 4 year old. Also, you’re a bit behind the curve in this little gem on info.

  14. Adamg1230 says: Sep 2, 2009 10:45 PM

  18. mnmaverick says: Sep 2, 2009 10:57 PM

I think Favre could use some more seasoning, but yeah, that collision ended the pre-season.
I really don’t think he intended to be in a blocking role on the play. That dude was coming at him, so he did the only thing he could do in that situation, he ducked.
It looked worse than it was.

Jesus Florio are you on the rag or something?!?!?! The guy made a block, all be it illegal, it was still just a block for christ sakes. Will you be babbling on and on about every illegal hit this year by every player or does your outright douche beggary only pertain to Favre? If your boyfriend Teddy Bruschi had made an illegal play would we have to sit through 8 articles of your ball baby dribble? NOPE you would have gotten down on bended knee and puckered up to kiss his ass. SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY YOU DICK!!! How about this angle…a QB who you claim to be ‘past his prime’ gave up his body to protect a teammate….I guess that blows all of your schism reports out of kilter. Remember when journalist (and I use that loosely when referring to you) were objective and just gave the facts and not their biased opinion. You are a joke!!!!

The Vikings will beat the Packers 34-17, 35-19, or somthing like that on Oct. 5th. because Green Bay’s defense wont be able to stop AD, and because Minnesota’s defense will smother Rodgers. Mark my words.

  24. Fan_Of_ Four says: Sep 2, 2009 11:33 PM

Look at the Vikings schedule, the first five games will be like pre-season. Talk about a cream puff schedule, Favre has plenty of time to knock off the rust. Funny how people ( Florio) likes to spin things here making Favre out to be the devil incarnate. After the Texans game people should be asking what the hell is wrong with Schaub that he can’t compete with a 39 year old QB who only practiced for ten days ? Also, the guy hurts himself running off the field? WTF is that all about ? There shouldnt be any question why Favre was wanted in MN. These young QB’s out there suck.

i thought florio was being sarcastic with the vikings v. vikings comment as a reference to the supposed infighting about favre.
the block was a wuss move and could have ended a guy’s career. love favre all you want but admit the guy pulled a cheap move. it’s plain to see.

  28. Whats_Your_Badge_Number? says: Sep 3, 2009 1:59 AM

Sad thing is, if Favre didn’t throw that block, and Percy got smashed, Florio would be bashing Favre for NOT being a team member… Either way, instead of saying that Favre looked decent, he finds the one flaw he can hype up that most people don’t give a shit about, and or already forgot about.

The guy who got stuck with the $ 100 ticket for the Cowboy game doesn’t see much upside either.
Here’s the UP side, Brad. You take your non-camp, non-combatatant QB and tell him to run out on the field for a series or two. You have him run a set of running plays just to make sure he’s using the playbook. He throws a pass to the assembled adoration of the masses.
That’s it. Brett collects his weekly $ 1/2 m. check and we’re done. I’d call that UP side.

Thank you for your always insightful comments Ragnar. When you can present an actual rebuttal instead of simply calling everyone you disagree with gay, maybe you’ll get some respect around here. Probably not, but maybe.
This article is really not news. Every team should rest most of its starters this week, and especially the 40-year old ones.
One has to wonder how much time Favre has had to work and develop rhythm with his new receivers though, missing training camp altogether and then playing less than 3 total quarters of preseason.
Luckily the Vikings have an easy first couple of games. I can see them possibly going 3-0, 2-1 at least before the meltdown begins..

  43. RagnartheViking says: Sep 3, 2009 12:06 PM

Beer: Idon’t call everyone gay. I usually reserve that for Dewey because of his incessant insertions(probably shouldn’t use that word) of his sexual misadventures with the same sex.
I am not on a website looking for “respect”.
I don’t mean to sound flippant, but why would any of us care what the others think of us? We don’t know each other, we’re never going to know each other.
JimmySmith is a tool, you have to know that as well as I do, he left an opening( wow, insertion and opening in the same post, Dewey must be nursing a hardon right now) so I took it.
As to the article. Chilly is in a now win situation.
If he plays him and he gets hurt, the armchair QBS will be out in full force. Yes, he probably could use more time to gain rythm, but I think I’d rather he be uninjured, than play a few more series(s?).
By the way, don’t let jimicos see that you said Favre played less than 3 total quarters, aaccording to him Favre played 3 full against Houston.
I still don’t get why you all think there is going to be a meltdown. because 1 year he had an arm injury? That;s been fixed.
You believe he’s telling the truth about his injuries? Really? Who has a cracked rib and throws that block?
The meltdown, trainwreck, schism is what you are all hoping for. You act like it’s a fact that it’s going to happen.
I don’t think you Packer fans could handle it, IF, big IF, he was running around with the trophy in his hand.
I forsee many Packer fans heads exploding, ala the movie scanners.
The good thing about that? The intelligence quotient in the US would go up tenfold.

This annual ritual of bragging and claiming the paper championship based on the signing of a FA, or the prediction of a SI sportswriter is getting real old.
What isn’t getting old is the fact that the Vikings haven’t been to a Superbowl in over 30 years and when they were there, they went 0-4 to cement the title, NFL Choke-Artists.

Favre will lose his pancreas in that game at the dome.

That you have to pull a month old prediction out to go nana nana?
Be sure to mark down all of your excuses IF the Packers get beat to. I’ll save you some time:
1.) The refs screwed us and gave the Vikes the game.
2.) The Vikes got lucky.(FG, sack, TD)
3.) The Steroid “cheats” didn’t get suspended.
4.) We have injuries, full strength, we win.
5.) There was a car coming.
6.) We were on gool when All Day went for 80 yds. on that run.
Feel free to cut and paste jimi.
Trust me, IF the Vikes win, 99% of you won’t give them any credit. Hence the sarcasm.

“Ragnar–You believe he’s telling the truth about his injuries? Really? Who has a cracked rib and throws that block?”
    ————————————————–
Ragnar–Now you are starting to understand the real Favre
You always have to look at his angles. You think maybe he was trying to get the Texans to blitz him all night with the intentions of hurting him so he could pick ‘em apart on the little dink passes & slants? I’d say it’s pretty obvious–no rib injuries.
The bad part to that though will be when his arm starts bothering him around week 6 or 7 & he hides it from everone like he did at the Jets.
That’s when he starts hurting the Vikes just so he can get his record starts record & you KNOW Chilly won;t have the cajones to bench him.
He gave the Pack 12 or 13 good years (out of 16) but he bears watching. There’s no doubt, Favre has his own agenda. Hopefully everybody around him stays healthy (as well as Favre himself) & the NFC North becomes a three team powerhouse dragging both wild cards in to the playoffs. Favres best years were under Holmgren who kept him very much in check. I just don;t think Chilly knows how to do that and it may be Favre’s ego has gotten so big that at this point, no one could keep him in check.
I will say this though, I had a horrible dream last night. Vike’s missed playoffs (that’s not the horrible part)–I woke up after the Super BOwl to open my paper & it read “Vikes hire Holmgren, Favre staying”. I woke up sweating.
NFC North’s going to be exiting this year IMHO.

Such an idiot. You belabored the point by arguing so damn long about it. He played the entire quarter. End of story. You tried to downplay how much time he was in there, I called you out on it. That’s all.
I don’t know why you insisted for so long on calling Favre’s play “2 quarters and one drive”. I think it’s to make his 142 yards look better. If you had just admitted the truth we would’ve gotten past that point. But admitting the truth isn’t one of your strong suits.

  56. RagnartheViking says: Sep 4, 2009 7:59 AM

    In jimi’s world:
    7 minutes = 1 quarter of football
Looking good in the preseason = doing well in the regular season
What color is the sky in your world anyway?
    ===================================
What you fail to understand, and i will explain to you again, is that I don’t expect Favre to put up huge numbers.
I could care less if his 142 yards was spread out over 4 quarters and an OT.( is that 35 minutes of football to you?) I could care less if he has 0 yards.
I said he looked good, because he completed a high percentage of his passes, and did not have a turnover. Favre being there is going to open lanes for AD.
He could have 2 yards passing and if the Vikes still win, who cares? he wasn’t brought in to ride his arm to victory, he was brought in to keep defenses honest.
I admit the truth. It just doesn’t fit in with your line of thinking(thank god!)
I conceded just so you would quit jabbereing about something that , in the grand scheme of things, means nothing. Seriously that had to be the dumbest debate I’ve been involved in.

I hope Raji’s ankle is ok, we don’t need the Pack having any built in excuses as to why they start losing games.

  57. jimicos says: Sep 4, 2009 8:20 PM

    Rag,
How many minutes do you think a QB normally plays in a quarter? I’m serious. There’s 15 minutes each quarter. Are you aware of that? Are you also aware that 7 is about half of 15? Are you also aware that two teams play against each other and each team typically holds the ball for roughly the same amount of time?
This all points to the fact that 7 minutes would be about what you’d expect your QB to play in a quarter.
But this discussion wasn’t even about that. It’s about your inability to understand that since Minnesota trotted out NO ONE other than Brett Favre to take snaps from center, HE PLAYED THE ENTIRE QUARTER. Period. Justify his stats however you want, but he played 3 quarters of that game. This is an indisputable fact.
