Despite some trade rumors to the contrary, the indications out of Kansas City this week were that Tyler Thigpen is staying put, regardless of the status of Matt Cassel’s knee.
Any team interested in Thigpen may have had second thoughts after Thursday night’s performance. Thigpen threw two interceptions in seven attempts before getting the hook for Matt Gutierrez.
Thigpen’s performance wasn’t all his fault. According to the Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs’ offensive line struggled all night. Brodie Croyle reportedly made some great throws, but his accuracy was all over the place, completing five of 16 passes for 53 yards.
Croyle started the game, but it’s unclear at this stage who would start for the Chiefs in their season opener if Cassel isn’t able to play.
Let’s be honest. I don’t think anyone is counting on Kansas City, or Tampa Bay, being this years Dolphins, Ravens, or Falcons.
its good to be a chargers fan.
I think the battle for the worst team in the NFL this year will be between the Chiefs, Rams and Broncos.
Yes, the Lions will be better than these three.
“Croyle started the game, but it’s unclear at this stage who would start for the Chiefs in their season opener if Cassel wasn’t able to play.”
Um… no. It’s unquestionably Croyle. Thigpen is HORRIBLE.
Tyler Thigpen is uncapable of running an NFL offense. His “success” last year, if you want to call winning one game and locking on Dwayne Bowe or Tony Gonzalez on every play “success”, came with a gimmick college offense the Chiefs were FORCED to adopt because it’s the only way they were going to move the ball with Thigpen under center.
It is a source of constant amusement to see supposedly intelligent football analyists fail to see that simple truth, and say things like “Why didn’t they give Thigpen more of a shot this year?”.
KC obviously didn’t remember the lesson learned by the Lions when they signed Scott Mitchell… or for that matter, the Browns with Derek Anderson. Both guys didn’t put up great numbers long enough to really warrant those big contracts they got. Cassel only had 1 good season but KC traded for him anyways and paid him a lot based on that 1 season only, instead of making sure he’s not a flash in the pan like Anderson seems to have been. Usually it’s a smart idea to wait and see a QB put up good numbers for more than 1 year before you break the bank over him. Who knows, maybe it’ll work out well for KC.
But I don’t know. Cassel looks to be another Scott Mitchell or Derek Anderson to me…
Chiefs offense in the preseason under Chan Gailey: scored 10, 13, and 10 points in the first three games.
Chiefs offense under Todd Haley: 9 points.
Maybe Scott “the Genius” Pioli should know how to draft offensive linemen.
Chargers are overated, LT’s a bum. this division is up for grabs. watchout out for the next tom brady…tom brandstater!
In college, Brodie Croyle had a terrible o-line, and spent four years taking bone-jarring hits and missing games with injuries. The Football Gods rewarded him by having him drafted by Kansas City, where he could continue playing behind a terrible o-line and getting creamed. It’s a harsh, cruel world.
Chiefs, Rams, Broncos, and Tampa Bay will be the 4 worst teams this year along with Detriot.
Chargers fans are quick to forget you beat the Chiefs by a combined 2 points in the two games last year. It took a dropped onside kick by Bowe and a batted down 2 point conversion to win those games.
Keep that in mind when your on the internet with your pants down trying to measure what you think is success.
good thing that Pioli has Mr. Irrelevant to give him advice.
The problem is the Chiefs, Broncos and Raiders, which are 3 really bad teams, all play eachother twice. Throw in an additional win here and there in upsets and they each can win 5 games, even when there terrible. Guys right, Chargers have a cake walk to win this division. Make note of Detroit and St Louis again being the 2 worst teams in the league.
I agree Chargers are way overrated. They could only beat the AFC West last year, but against the rest of the league had a losing record. I predict rolling blackouts in SD.
