Vick will be eligible to play in third game

Michael Vick’s reinstatement to the NFL will no longer be conditional after two weeks of the regular season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told a small group of reporters the news in New York Thursday, including NBCSports.com and PFT’s Tom Curran.

Before Thursday, all we knew is that Vick’s conditional reinstatement would last no longer than Week Six.  Goodell was asked why he chose two weeks.

Goodell said that Vick is “Demonstrating his commitment and will use better judgment going forward. We are looking for a success story here.”

One reporter wondered why the league is going the “extra mile” to help Vick out.

“Not sure I totally agree with that,” Goodell said.  “First of all, the situation was somewhat unique. We don’t have a lot of players that have served that kind of jail term coming back into the league.”

Goodell revealed that he met with Vick and Eagles coach Andy Reid for 45 minutes.  He also met with Vick advisor Tony Dungy, after the meeting with Vick.

Goodell has also spoken with Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle, and says Vick will do several more apperances on his behalf.

“It sounds as if [Vick] is expected to do that in the next 30 days,” Goodell said.

Goodell also spoke that he believes Vick is trying to think long-term.  To that point, Vick intends to marry his long-time girlfriend.

“I think he’s recognizing that these are life-management skills, not just things he needs to do for next 2-3 years.”

For now, the focus on Vick will be much more short term.  He should see significant playing time against the Jets Thursday night.  The next time you could see on the field will be in Philadelphia in Week Three, against the Chiefs.  The Eagles have a bye the following week.

UPDATE: So far, the reading public seems to agree with the decision.

McNabb wanted more weapons, well he’s got them now…AK47; Glock, 9mm…oh..not those kind of weapons! Just kidding. I’m glad he’s reinstated but just skeptical as to how Cannon will use him. Marty Morningweg will be a genius…an absolute genius.

Very first post said, “And now we can trade Feeley for a TE or another 2nd!” and the skins just turned down a #1 pick for Todd Collins from New England. hahahahah. If A.J. was good enough for a second round pick, you never would have signed Vick you idiot. Get off the bong dude and get ready to cut A.J. Feeley! Get your michael phelps on another way. Sounds like you already have though.
Now lets wait for #5 to have a bad series of downs or, god forbid, an entire game. Philly will be calling for McNabb’s head on a plate just like every year.
The NFC East isn’t as cut and clean as every analyst thinks. Even though the eagles have already been awarded the conferance, i think other nfc east teams may have another spin on it when the helmets are strapped on. The loss of j.j., dawkins and s bradley are much much greater then you guys think. Jimmy Johnson had the knack of knowing what the other team was going to run and calling the precise defense to stop it. Good luck in replacing a legend. Not too mention the heart of Dawkins.

  29. LiveNBreatheFootball says: Sep 3, 2009 5:40 PM

He has shown he gets it HOW? In a month he has shown he will demonstrate good judgment going forward? Huh??? Almost anyone can stay out of trouble for a month. Heck it was more than a month before Vick was found with marijuana in his system while out on bond.
Oh, right, he finally marrying the mother of his children. That shows he is thinking long term. No, it shows he is still all about style over substance. Marriage does not make one obey the law or be a good person.

  33. BuckyBadger says: Sep 3, 2009 5:53 PM

It should have been either the full year to ensure he can stay out of trouble and be a free man or let him start playing in Week 1.
This 5 or now 2 game suspension is just plain stupid too me. Either you feel he has served his time or he hasn’t. 2 games doesn’t change anything. I don’t see any good argument for it.
Either let him play this year or don’t.
I wish him well even though what he did was horrendous. This is America and I hope he makes the most of his second opportunity.

  34. Festivus says: Sep 3, 2009 5:55 PM

In reality who cares, Vick will screw it up somehow and get suspended again. If by some miracle he doesnt get caught lets hope theres a dog lovin LB out there who will rip Vicks knees to shreds. C’mon torn ACL baby!!!!

  35. nflqb says: Sep 3, 2009 5:57 PM

I dont get it , he demonstrated he has not tortured a defenseless animal over the last 3 weeks? He basically went hitler on dogs for seven yrs and goodell thinks he’s shown that he’s a changed man since he has not electricuted animals for a few weeks?
I mean come on this is pathetic , what was goodell basing vick being good on? The guy tortured living breathing things for yrs and goodell was waiting 3 weeks to see if he was gonna do it again?

  36. Matt says: Sep 3, 2009 6:03 PM

    1. “One reporter wondered why the league is going the ‘extra mile’ to help Vick out. ‘Not sure I totally agree with that,’ Goodell said.”
So, you don’t totally disagree with it, either? At least have an opinion and come off as somewhat confident about it, ass. Real convincing.
    2. “Goodell also spoke that he believes Vick is trying to think long-term. To that point, Vick intends to marry his long-time girlfriend.”
Kind of funny how extraneous things that Vick is doing that have no bearing on when he should be reinstated are being interpreted as a positive (e.g., Vick marrying a girlfriend gets spun into a change to a long-term mindset, because as we all know, decision to enter marriage is always indicative of a long-term mindset, right?). If the marriage thing is an example that Goodell mentioned himself (to be fair, you can’t tell from the way it’s phrased in the passage), it sounds like he’s stretching to generate examples that fit to preconceived justifications.

Gonna try to see the bigger picture. That might a mistake with the patrons of this board but…
This is an example of redemption. Everyone is watching. If we send a message that if you break the law, do your time there still isn’t a place for you, we aren’t helping ourselves. And everyone is watching on this one.
There are more people in prison now than ever before. Here’s hoping that this situation, regardless of how despicable it was, can provide some hope and inspiration to those who are incarcerated and due to be released, that assimilating and becoming a working citizen is possible.
It’s that or we are going to have to start shooting them.

Coach Reid: My boy says he can save fifty dogs, he can save fifty dogs.
Associated Press: Yeah, but in how long?
    Vick: A hour.
Goodell: Well, I believe I’ll take part of that wager.
    Later…..
Coach Reid: Why you got to go and say fifty dogs for? Why not thirty-five or thirty-nine?
Vick: I thought it was a nice round number.

Again, I am going to say this one more time even though I am yelling into the wind.
I just want people to admit they do not care because Vick is a superstar football player. Not this fake “he paid his debt to society”.
The biggest argument is that he has a special set of skills thus he is allowed to get his job back. (or his right to make a living)
However, case in point: a Doctor commits the same felony, he loses his license to practice medicine and can never do this again. Same for a lawyer (i know i know everyone hates lawyers), but he would be disbarred and never able to practice law again. This EVEN AFTER he paid his debt to society by going to prison.
So enough with the phony, “he paid his debt”
At least be intellectually honest and say “I just do not care because he scores Touch Downs.”
