In addition to cutting tight end Alex Smith and dealing another tight end, David Thomas to the Saints, here are a few other roster moves from the Patriots today.
Linebacker Shawn Crable has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury, shelving him for the season. The second-year player from Michigan, a third-round pick last year, started 2008 on the PUP list before being put on IR with a shin injury so he still hasn’t played in an NFL game.
The Patriots also released Darryl Richard, a defensive lineman they took in the seventh round in April, wide receiver Terrence Nunn, offensive tackle Wesley Britt, former Lions linebacker Paris Lenon, offensive lineman Ryan O’Callaghan, wideout/safety Ray Ventrone, defensive lineman Titus Adams, defensive back Herana-Daze Jones and defensive back Jamar Love.
The Patriots will get a seventh-round pick back from the Saints in exchange for Thomas.
Florio….question for you. Does the league do any type of injury verification when players like Crable are put on IR. In his case it just happens to be 2 years in a row with a “shin injury” and now a “groin injury” (wink wink), neither injury sounding as a year long injury. Is this just another avenue to stash players who aren’t NFL ready but yet the team doesn’t want to try and slip them through to waivers????? Other teams may do it also, but with the Pats reputation of “inovativeness”, playing with the injury report, filming other teams practices, etc. etc., it stands to reason that the Pats would be the team to be trying this first.
Good question – but would a player want to go on IR? The reality is that Crables career is most likely over, not just his season. Out of football 2 years, doesn’t look good. I think if he thought he could play, at all, he’d want to take his chance with another team.
dying to know what practices were filmed
it’s an old question. You can find endless posts dating back to the 90′s on the issue. As with filming of defensive signals, the pats didn’t introduce the activity.
Rules were enacted to deal with player stashing on ir including making those players lost for the year and making the active day roster 45 players. I believe it’s at the teams discretion who goes on the list, but I’m not sure exactly….
MrHumble, September 11 was orchestrated by the U. S. government, the Apollo 11 Moon Landings were faked by NASA and barcodes were invented to control people. I’m with you dude, this “inovativeness” thing is off the hook.

Hey, you guys are originally jealous. I guess going 18-1 and 11-5 without TB is filming too, huh ? I wonder what you’ll say after this season…? Eventually you’ll have to climb back into your holes and die !
i understand their are patriots haters… but the patriots desperately needed crable last year and this year… and as belichick proved with kevin o’connell he isnt afraid to cut someone who aint that good.. if he were healthy hed be on the 53 man roster
Britt, O’Callahan, Ventrone and Adams are all solid…other teams will pick them up. Nunn is a practice squad guy if he passes through waivers.
