Brohm decides to join Packers practice squad

NFL teams other than the Packers were interested in Green Bay’s second-round pick from 2008, but not interested enough to put a waiver claim in for him.

After mulling over his options and talking with other teams about joining their practice squad, Brohm decided to stick in Green Bay, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The idea of starting somewhere fresh was probably appealing to Brohm, but he also would have been throwing away all his experience in Mike McCarthy’s system.

Brohm will essentially hold the same job he did last year as Green Bay’s third quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn.

He’ll just make a lot less money doing it.

Filling out Green Bay’s practice squad: Cyril Obiozior, Jake Allen, Trevor Ford, Jamon Meredith, Ronald Talley, and Anthony Toribio.

UPDATE: Howard Balzer of The Sports Xchange helpfully points out that Brohm will make more on the Packers practice squad than he would have elsewhere.  Brohm also had a partial guarantee in his rookie contract that could have scared teams away.

UPDATE II: We forgot to include running back Kregg Lumpkin’s name above after reporting earlier that he was on the squad.

Good practice squad signings for the Packers. Obiozor has a good bit of promise physically speaking and more development could help him make the 53 net year. Toribio is surprisingly quick for his size, very happy about keeping him as well.

Glad they were able to hold onto Obi and Meredith

    …and Kregg Lumpkin

I think this is really good for the team. Brohm obviously has the physical tools and a few (more) years in the system could really help him. If you remember, Arod was terrible for two preseasons and then it clicked. MM knows how to coach qbs.

Hell…with unemployment at 9.7 % in august…..Hell of alot of people are looking to Temp. agencies for employment…….Don’t see why Brohm would be any different……..And thats basically what this is…..

What happened to this guy, wasn’t he a top tier prospect a couple of years ago?

Allen, Obi, Ford, BB, Talley, Meredith, Toribio.
That’s seven. Are we going to plug in somebody else from outside? Anybody hearing anything?

    RB Lumpkin made the PS.

If Brohm ever turns out to be anything other than a bust, I’d be shocked. He has shown nothing in two years.

What a waste. Ted “overrated for God knows why” trades the Packer’s best DT in 2007 for a 2nd round draft pick and ends up wasting it on a 3rd string QB who he cuts a year later.
Then he lets go Sutton gambling that he can get him back on the practice squad.
    OOPS!
    More Ted Thompson Follis

Just shows you the draft is a crap shoot. In 2007 Brohm was considered if not the top QB he was considered one of the top two QBs in college. Another QB, Colt Brennan was up there as well and both decided to play another year in college. In that draft Brohm would have been a top five pick at the least and than coach of the Dolphins Cam Cameron said that he would have selected Brennan with the 9th pick if he had came out. A year later Brohm slides to the 2nd rd and Brennan slides to the 7th rd. Brohm gets cut and Brennan who was struggling to make the team get placed on IR. The world of football is just crazy!

Yea because they have a first round talent qb who has yet to get the mental part of the game right still at their disposal while paying him a fraction of what he could have been earning. Does anyone not remember…Rich Gannon didn’t do sh*t in this league until he had MM as a qb coach, then what happened? He became league MVP. Aaron Rodgers get drafted by TT and SUCKS for two preseasons, gets it together, and in his first season starting is one of the highest rated passers in the league. The connection between the two, Mike McCarthy. Brohm is going to sit a year on the practice squad, still be involved with the offensive gameplanning, come back next summer and tear through the preseason thus solidifying his spot as the number 2 in Green Bay.

…and then get traded for a higher pick than the one we took him with.
