While Dick Jauron and his new offensive staff were breaking bread with Ralph Wilson in Detroit, former Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert decided to get a few things off his chest.
In comments to Buffalo television station WIVB (via Tim Graham at ESPN), Schonert popped off about the disagreements he had with Bills head coach Dick Jauron. Specifically, he says Jauron wants an offense built more for middle schoolers.
“He told me the offense wasn’t simple enough for him. We had too many formations, too many plays. I didn’t simplify it to his liking,” Schonert said.
“He wants a Pop Warner offense. He limited me in formations and limited me in plays. He’s been on my back all offseason.”
Um, wow.
Without knowing more about the situation, it’s hard to tell if Schonert has a legitimate beef or whether this is just a case of sour grapes. And while the Bills offense has clearly been lacking all preseason, it’s fair to say that Jauron has exhibited no ability to make the right decisions to direct a quality NFL offense as a head coach.
The last eight teams Jauron has coached have failed to be in the top 20 offenses in the league in yards, and only his 2001 Bears were in the top 20 in points. Jauron is a defensive-minded coach, but clearly his hires on offense have left a lot to be desired.
Including Schonert.
It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that Ralph’s cheap coaching staff is coming apart at the seams as usual.
If history has taught us anything, we know that Ralph likes cheap coaches and GMs…. They don’t fight his “input” like an intelligent and capable front office/coaching staff normally would. This formula has brought us many Lombardi Trophies.
Bill Polian, why has thou forsaken us?
Yeah, I know, and we understand.
Ralph, after 80 years you should know that “you get what you pay for” Unless you are a Bill’s season ticket holder, that is…..
Please sell the team to Jim Kelly and his group of investors before you destroy all of us in Buffalo.
How is this shocking?
To paraphrase Pulp Fiction, Ralph and Dick got caught sucking each others Popsicles too early last year.
Dick was given an extension after week 5, immediately to be followed by a major collapse, and Ralph being as cheap as he is kept him around to avoid having to pay him for doing nothing.
But it has been obvious throughout his career that Jauron is a terrible coach.
His D and O are Vanilla as they come, with zero creativity. He thinks that they can run 5-6 plays, and if they do it well enough that’s all you need. Talk about Pop Warner alright.
“Ok kids… we’re going to use our running play this time.”
His atrocious bend but don’t break 46 D that gets completely obliterated by underneath passing games, and leaves the D gassed in the 4th to give up huge points at the worst time.
And of course the problems that have exisited year in and year out during his time there.
The Oline still sucks.
The Dline can’t get pressure.
Trent Edwards has a confidence issue that the coaching staff is not helping him overcome.
They can’t beat a 3-4 D.
He continues to practice inside and look unprepared for cold days in Buffalo.
It’s pathetic.
Jauron is pathetic. ANd if Ralph wasn’t cheap he’d be long gone.
Of course, Ralph is too cheap to actually PAY for a good coach to come in and take over.
Cowher, Schottenheimer, Shanahan, Holmgren.
All available for the right price, all would at LEAST get this team back to competing and making the playoffs….
But no… even if we fired Jauron it’s be another useless search for whoever would work for 1 mill or less.
Is John Schoop available?
Great insight guys, I agree completely. Jauron is a joke, Turk has a terrible track record and was given the job anyway, now AVP, its a train wreck.
I see Jauron’s face and I feel like I’m looking at a scared kid; and that stupid hat.
I was a huge fan of Trent Edwards, but as I hear him more in the media I realize that he is Jauron’s little apprentice. I am really looking forward to the T.O. blow up, fortunately for Turk he won’t be around.
I have season tickets again and it’s looking more like come November I’ll be watching the Sunday Ticket in my living room rather than hooting in the Rock Pile; just a shame, something needs to be done. Come on Ralph!
The Bills are a mess, this will get uglier in about two weeks or so, when the old familiar happens.
Considering how old Ralph Wilson is (age 90) you would think he would throw caution to the wind and overpay a great coach to come in & try and win before he dies.
Some of the major decisions that the Bills have made the last few years makes me wonder if Wilson’s mind isn’t as sharp as it once was. Maybe he should turn over the team’s day-to-day operations to someone else, like George Steinbrenner did with the Yankees.
Lets get it right Turk was a QB coach that moved up last year so he REALLY didnt have a good year last year 7-9 but what do we do we fire him and promote the qb coach lol
Alex is now got alot on his chest now how does he call he plays now more runs more pass or more conservtive bullshit
I really hope that dick throws his two sence in because if he does not I would not bet this is his last year
also I will be going to 3 games this year
jacksonville, altanta , and the ass wooping we are going to put on the pats on DEC 20 in buffalo
lets go buffalo
lining up and pulverizing the opponent works great, if there isnt anywhere near even talent level.
but sooner or later, the supertalented team runs into a team with equal talent or a better scheme.
one has to use subterfuge at least ONCE in a while.
Bad-mouthing your old boss is not a smart thing to do, normally, in the NFL. But it is probably ok in Buffalo because Jauron is a joke. I agree with everything canadianeh said above.
Wilson is a fool. I am a season-ticket holder and love the Bills no matter what, but Wilson needs to get a proven leader to GM/coach this team. And they had better freaking start practicing outside or I am going to jump from a building. That Cleveland loss two years ago should have taught them a lesson about weather.
Hopefully AVP is creative, because if Jauron was confused by Schonert’s “complicated” offense then we are screwed as fans.
Anybody heard the “Trent Edwards Song” yet? Very funny. Sad but true…
Bye bye Turk. Be quiet and maybe you’ll be hired elsewhere. Good luck AVP!!!! Try not to confuse Jauron. Jauron on the sidlines is such a sad sight – his facial expression is like he is constantly feeling an impending bathroom issue. What a fool!
When Juron decided to THROW THE BALL with wih the lead and lese then 2 minutes to go in a game, it was time for him to get pink slipped.
Week 1Buffalo @ New England….Drubbing
Get your popcorn ready.
If you think this is a problem, just wait till Owens blows up on the sideline and talks bad about the QB play. Its coming just wait…..
Journeyman beat me to it. This is starting to look like it’s going to be one of the most entertaining three ring circuses in the NFL this year once TO revs up his act.
Obviously it’s been a while since any of you looked at a Pop Warner Middle school playbook. My son’s 5th 6th grade team ran a West coast style offense from the shotgun very successfully. Also threw several half back passes for touchdowns.
The real disservice here is the slam on Pop Warner.
you started your story off by explaining that jauron and wilson were busy breaking bread. I would want to eat a little more than bread, but wilson won’t buy anything more expensive than bread. jauron is a defensive coach (wow how much winning has he done?) it says, i think that he is laying the ground work for a defense for Wilson not to fire him. they eat bread together!!! Of course Schonert is not Phi Beta kappa from Harvard either.
I hope T.O. does blow-up on the sidelines. Somebody has to have some emotion on this team. Jauron is a fool and Wilson has been insane for decades.
Wilson needs to pay off Jauron’s joke of an extention from last year, fire him, and hire one of the seemingly hundreds of Super Bowl winning coaches talking in booths or fishing right now.
It’s Dick Mauron. Rosenthal’s gotta get a spell checker.
Mauron reminds me of Coach Klein from The Waterboy.
As a Bears fan I can say Jauron is a complete incompetent who will not take the risks necessary to win. He is so scared of making a mistake he kills his team and the fans who have to watch his team.
He makes moustache Dave W. look like a coaching genius.
I am a season ticket holder and I can’t think of many fans in that stadium who have any faith in Jauron as a coach. We can really only go up from where we are, and I guarantee if Jauron goes, the next coach will be welcomed in the streets of Orchard Park as a hero before even winning a game.
Jauron’s the sap that stuck us with John Schoop as Bear’s offensive coordinator and we all know how that went. His play calling was about as Pop Warner as it gets and look where it got us…nowhere.
I don’t think Jauron is head coach material. Watch him on the sidelines…he’s like watching paint dry! Lovie’s starting to get that glazed over look on the sidelines too.
