Coughlin: "It's pretty obvious" why Redskins signed Woodson

Tom Coughlin doesn’t smile a lot at press conferences, but he had a big smile on his face when he talked about Washington’s signing of former Giants quarterback Andre Woodson.

“You mean, ‘Why is he in Washington right now?’ ” Coughlin asked before laughing. “It’s pretty obvious why he’s in Washington. There’s no question
that’s what’s going on. We’ll see what transpires. It works both ways a
little bit.”

Coughlin was asked if he had ever pulled a similar maneuver, and he admitted to doing so, but not of late during his Giants tenure.

“I’ve been a part of it. I’ve seen it done,” Coughlin said. “The guy doesn’t get in the door two seconds and he’s in a
classroom getting grilled.”

Redskins coach Jim Zorn didn’t deny they could use Woodson for info, but said that they were interested in him as a draft pick in 2008.

Zorn, however, admitted that he might be frustrated if he was in Coughlin’s shoes.

“[Woodson] might be able to help us a little bit,” Zorn said.  “He knows their stuff. He certainly knew their snap count, just the obvious things.”

All of the spy game talk is fun, but Coughlin seems to know it won’t make much of a difference in the final outcome on Sunday.

Coughlin said the team will likely change some audibles, but he didn’t sound too concerned about the issue, joking that everything they taught Woodson was for show anyhow.

“It was all out there so that Andre would take it with him,” Coughlin said.

  1. Dumb. So the Eagles who signed Dixon and the Saints who signed Daniel did it just to use their information against the Skins? Doubtful. All these teams just like the players. I don’t think the Skins would pick a QB for the practice squad solely based on the fact that he came from an upcoming opponent, and I don’t think any team would do that. That’s a dumb and shortsighted thing to do, and it’s too easy for the Giants to compensate for things like snap count and audibles.

  2. Yes Tom, teams do sign players from their rivals, just to get information….. Heck, the Jets probably have a guy hanging out at Gillette Stadium 24 hours a day, just in case the Pats decide to make a roster move….

  3. It’s always convenient to sign a player from a division rival.
Funny that Coughlin is even talking about it, of course Antonio Pierce spilled his guts on the Skins when he made the move to Giants. He knew Washington far better than Woodson knows NY.

  4. insecure coughlin?
i mean cmon, the skins have NO 3rd qb, and their 2nd qb is 38 years old. stop crying and play the game.

  5. Hey DCAdam…..”Dumb and shortsighted”? Isn’t that the ‘Skins historically documented business plan?

  6. Remember its woodson and if you saw him play he did not know snap counts or the playbook himself
Its the redscanks they will take any help they can get but it will not matter the G-Men will walk all over them again

  7. If Washington was so high on him, why didnt they claim him last year? He went to the practice squad last year without a problem.
As for the Giants signing Pierce, they signed him to be on the active roster and a starter.
Don’t be surprised if Woodson is cut mid season.

  8. Zaggs —
Skins had already drafted Colt Brennan instead and had him on the active roster as their #3 QB. No room for Woodson on the roster.

You STILL don’t have a 3rd QB! Woodson makes Campbell look like some amazing combo of Unitas, Montana, Marino, & Brady all wrapped up in one. The guy is awful. Good luck with him. If Zorn can turn him around, Zorn deserves to go into the HOF as the greatest QB tutor in NFL history and should get a lifetime contract from the Skins.

  10. You beat me to it, steeltownpride. Nobody knows more about espionage than Mr. Coughlin.
    Pot, meet kettle.

  11. I don’t care either way but it didn’t seem like he was crying, it seemed like someone asked him a question about it and he answered it. He didn’t complain or cry foul, he even admitted he has done the same thing. Its amazing to me that anyone would think theres no way a NFl team would do this considering all the little things teams do to get even small advantages.

If the Jets do that I am sure the Pats organization has video footage of it.

  13. Bubby Brister, I disagree, Bill Belichick forgot more about espionage than any other coach will ever learn….. Atleast that is what 31 fan bases say….

  14. Memo to the drama queens above:
It’s football, this isn’t the first time this has happened nor will it be the last. You idiots are the exact demographic the media tries to stir shit up with like an absolute NON-STORY such as this.

  15. I seem to recall some years ago that the G-Men snatched up Matt Hasselbach’s Brother, whats his name again, real quick after the Skins cut him. At least Woodson is a lot younger than Elizabeth Hasselbach’s Husband was when the G-Men picked him up.
    What is the big deal?

  16. Let’s end the discussion on this note… when the Skin’s a few years back CUT QB Tim Hasselback in the pre-season… which team plucked him up?
That would be the G-men. Coaches are becoming more like politicians with their freaking selective memories every freakin’ day!
