David Tyree gets a look-see in Baltimore

The man who threw the ball has snared a nine-figure contract.

The man who caught the ball has gotten a set of steak knives.

Seems about right.

Less than a month after Giants quarterback Eli Manning snared that big-money, long-term deal, Giants receiver David Tyree found stuck to his helmet not a Super Bowl XLII game ball but a pink slip.

That said, Tyree’s unemployment might be short-lived. Per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Tyree worked out for the Ravens today. He’s currently taking a physical.

Tyree followed his championship game heroics with an ineffective 2008 season, during which he caught four passes for only three more total yards than were gained during the most memorable catch in Super Bowl history.

The fact that he’s now scrounging for work, less than 20 months after playing a key role in the unlikeliest of Super Bowl upsets, serves only to highlight the fact that the NFL has shifted from a “what have you done for me lately?” proposition to a business that wants only to know “what are you doing for me right now, and what can I expect out of your tomorrow?”
