Steelers show lack of faith in top two backs

With the season opener on the line late in the fourth quarter Thursday night, the Steelers kept running back Mewelde Moore on the field over Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall.

The decision isn’t shocking because Moore is so proficient on passing downs, but it was interesting to see Moore also get the ball in short-yardage situations.

On consecutive plays with under five minutes left inside the ten-yard line, Moore got the ball on second-and-two, and third-and-one.  The Pittsburgh offensive line failed to get a push both times, and Moore was stuffed.  (Just like Parker was stuffed in short-yardage earlier in the game.)

With time running down in regulation, Parker has rushed 13 times for 19 yards and his burst was lacking.  Mendenhall has rushed four times for six yards.

Yep. Pitts has an interesting back-field situation brewing.

It looks to me, the problem is with the O-line.

If Hines Ward protects the ball like a veteran is supposed to know how to do, it doesn’t matter about the backs.

I knew Moore was the best back in PIT. However, I assumed Willy got hurt not benched…

Steelers suck balls!!!!! Guy takes off this helmet after getting a tackle, no penalty. Helmet to helmet hit, no penalty. Fair catch called on the punt return and gets hit, no call. Payin refs for another win, typical steelers. This year is the Titans Superboul run.

It was their hurry up package, not a lack of faith. They did what they had to win the game but I don’t think there’s anything really to read into this.

    Mendenhall – bust.
If they are going to Moore this much in the 1st game of the season, that doesn’t look good for Mendenhall, who had a crappola camp and preseason.
Parker’s struggles from last year continue as well.

We Vikings fans know that Mewelde Moore is a good running back. He is a good open field runner that turns hardnosed when he finishes. He has good hands. We regretted losing him. It wouldn’t surprise me if Mewelde got a lot more playing time for Pittsburgh. The Steelers have excellent coaching and recognize talent in Moore when they see it.
The Steelers have big problems on the O-line. They won because Rothlisberger is an elite quarterback along with Brady and Peyton Manning. Of course, the Steelers’ defense and home field advantage help too.
Congratulations to the Steelers on beating a very good Titans team.
Wasn’t it cool how Santonio Holmes scored the last touchdown of last season and the first touchdown of this season?

Anyone remember when the Steelers used to just pound the ball? Now, they may just stop running altogether.

Good move cutting Redman, maybe we can swap him for Frank “oops I missed my block” Summers

I wouldn’t blame them for lacking faith in the other two backs tonight, but Moore was the no-huddle back last year, too.

  12. BigBaldPapaHawk says: Sep 11, 2009 12:03 AM

Any QB can pull off an OT drive like that under a 4 man rush. Titans brought nothing and Big Ben just sat back…. had a snack… read the coverage… caught up on his facebook page and then found an open receiver.

can I just take this time out to say that the NBC video player kicks some major ass? the quality between that and my slingbox solo is not even close! I am forever a fan and now will lobby for nbc player to show me every damn television event on my lap top.
seriously, can I pay them like $30 a month to develop a service like slingbox where they show me every channel I pay for at home? A-MAZED!
I take my hand off to you(a little vintage mike tyson in there for ya).
    seriously, HOLY SH!T! great job!
(didn’t participate in chat because every other chat we ever had is filled with nonsense wanna-be stand up comics getting all the attention. I figured “why bother?” sorry mikey)

It’s not a lack of faith.
Big Ben said after the game that they practiced the no huddle all week.
Obviously Mewelde Moore is the ‘hands’ RB for that series of plays.
    Everybody knows Parker can’t catch.

Why is this news,,,,, its good coaching.. They were not gonna run the ball needed to tie the game Lets put the back in who can block and catch…….. By these standards Chilly has givin up on AP cause on 3rd down he puts in Chester Taylor Cause he is a better Blocker…. Mike if you wanna create BS spin maybe you should write for the Inquirer….. I remember when this site was a place for REAL FOOTBALL NEWS…. Not the NFL rumor mill……

First, the helmet (“after the tackle”) was coming off on it’s own at the tail end of the play – watch it again, it’s clearer than day. Second, there were questionable calls throughout the game that went against both teams (the call against Max Starks was complete garbage, as was the first against Polamalu – as said, the bad calls went both ways). The Titans had their chances – if Bironas had connected either or both times, the tables would have been turned. Quit whining.

Mendenhall will be ok if he’s the #1 RB. Keep him in there. Tenn has an awesome D so I’m pretty sure they can run against Cle (2 games), Cincy (2), Det, KC, Oak, Den, etc, etc.
What is LenDope “Fat Turd” White saying now??

  19. descendency says: Sep 11, 2009 12:42 AM

Moore is the better all around back.
I’d cut Parker if I were them.

  20. zangy says: Sep 11, 2009 12:45 AM

willie ran like a b*tch tonight. I didn’t see a single run from him where he attack the defense, he just thought he could dance around and try to get the outside. terrible.

  21. jsleezy12 says: Sep 11, 2009 12:58 AM

Willie looked slow and couldn’t find a hole. He was going against 7 or 8 in the box and Tennessee did a great job of filling all the gaps.
Moore is Pittsburghs version of the Pats Kevin Faulk.
And I hope not, but Mendenhall may be a bust.

Right… horrible pass interference call on Polamalu, BS holding call on Starks, Harrison getting blatantly pulled down multiple times resulting in a no-call, one where the ref was staring right at the O-lineman… but you’re right, all the calls went the Steelers way.

  23. saintez says: Sep 11, 2009 1:13 AM

The titans didn’t close the deal. Points left on the field – Titans beat the Titans and the Steelers won. The lack of faith was just due to the fact that the Steelers CANNOT run on the Titans; they are in good company – no one can run on the Titans. Oh yeah, the Titans did not miss Albert or the 100 million that he wanted…
The team with the ball last was going to win; i guess we should have called heads…

  24. righthereisay says: Sep 11, 2009 1:40 AM

I’ve given up on Parker. He wants to continue to be a Bettis runner. It’s just not him
Mendenhall has given me no reason to believe in him
Moore is our best, and he is not that good.
I didn’t think we could win the Super Bowl last year with a a crew like this, but we did.
So, we may go all the way with them. If we don’t, I think it will be because of this.

  25. Reba says: Sep 11, 2009 2:17 AM

It’s too bad they cut Redman. It tended to tick me off! The O line sucks. They gave all the money to Roethlisberger and let Faneca go. Big mistake. Ben takes too long to get rid of the ball and causes the sacks and hits himself! Hartwig was pushed over 7 times in the Titans game! WTF!
Polamalu loss makes me want to cry!

  26. Atlanta Love says: Sep 11, 2009 6:27 AM

None of the backs looked impressive. But you have to take in account that they were playing the Titans. That’s not a defense you can just “run-to-daylight” on.

  27. Katmanduu says: Sep 11, 2009 9:37 AM

The Steelers have three good backs. Each brings a different set of skills to the table. Some weeks it’ll be Willie, other weeks it’ll be Rashard. Last night, the situation called for Mewelde. This is how good teams win….

  28. d.b.cooper says: Sep 11, 2009 10:19 AM

He will see action this season.
    Parker is done.

Dude, calm yourself down for real. The Titans weren’t innocent little children in this game either you know.
And for the fair catch punt return…That dude knows you can’t call for a fair catch before the ball’s even in the air (which is exactly what he did) and that’s why he got creamed, and that’s why there was no penalty. It was explained in clear, plain english a couple of times last night.

  30. Florios-Lawyer says: Sep 11, 2009 12:52 PM

Besides the obvious; the O-line and the RB’s, why doesn’t anyone ever mention Arians’ play-calling?
    Same shit every game.
2 runs up the gut, a screen, then punt. WTF?

I hope so. At least during preseason he played like he wanted to be there. Give the hungry kid a shot.
Parker’s not helping his contract situation… and Mendenhall, I expected more out of him.
